Cracking the Code: Laura Bright on taking chances to find out who you are

Cracking the Code: Laura Bright on taking chances to find out who you are

Entering college, Laura Bright was drawn to both French and math, two subjects she exceled in in high school. French remained something that came easily and she took for fun. But the math she took in college didn’t look like high school math and she wondered if that was the right path. As the department was combined with computer science, she took the advice of a female researcher and tried her hand at computer science.

She was drawn the more technical sides of her field but never considered herself a programmer. She thought she wanted to teach and make computer science come alive for other learners so pursued the PhD. She realized, though, that she wanted more hands on opportunities. Going into industry, she did more applied work and ultimately made a discovery about herself.

In this episode, find out from Laura how taking the opportunity just outside your comfort zone often leads to insights about who you are… on ROADS TAKEN...with Leslie Jennings Rowley.

    About This Episode’s Guest

The Mind of a HP APP Developer with Carlos Balsalobre-Fernandez

This EP is an interview with Carlos Balsalobre-Fernandez a professor of sports science teaching biomechanics and sports technology at the Autonomous University of Madrid. He is also a self-taught iOS developer of MyJumpApp which is a unique application that allows you to video various jump tests and derive important data points for performance analysis. He often speaks around the world at performance events and workshops about performance monitoring, strength testing, and technology implications in performance.  He’s also a researcher and author of 40+ peer-reviewed scientific publications. I met him several years ago at an event hosted by David Martin of the Philadelphia 76ers and loved hearing about the work he was doing.  We get into his APP development and much more in the amazing conversation, enjoy!  BTW, the next cohort of the LYM Life Lab begins in October 2022 - grab your LYM Life Lab starter kit FREE here https://lymlab.com/free-lym-lab-starter/ or apply today at https://lymlab.com/lym-lab/

Swapping the Engine Out of a Moving Race Car with Ella Ehrlich

Swapping the Engine Out of a Moving Race Car with Ella Ehrlich

Ella Ehrlich has been a developer at Jane Street for close to a decade. During much of that time, she’s worked on Gord, one of Jane Street’s oldest and most critical systems, which is responsible for normalizing and distributing the firm’s trading data. Ella and Ron talk about how to grow and modernize a legacy system without compromising uptime, why game developers are the “musicians of software,” and some of the work Jane Street has done to try to hire a more diverse set of software engineers.

You can find the transcript for this episode  on our website.

Some links to topics that came up in the discussion:

    • EG, The League of Legends team that Ella is a huge fan of.
    • Apache Kafka, the message bus that Gord migrated to.
    • Some of the various sources of symbology you have to deal with when normalizing trading data. (Really, there are too many sources to list here!)
    • A list of Jane Street’s recruiting Programs and Events, including INSIGHT, which focuses on women, and IN FOCUS, which focuses on historically underrepresented ethnic or racial minorities.

The Cloudcast #236 - Aligning App Performance to Business Success

The Cloudcast #236 - Aligning App Performance to Business Success
Brian talks with James Urquhart (@jamesurquhart, Senior Vice President of Performance Analytics @SOASTA) about the evolution of the digital economy, performance testing applications, understanding business impact of performance, and how companies are evolving in this new economy.

    Show Notes:

Topic 1 - Welcome back to the show, it’s been a little while. Tell us what you’re doing these days.

Topic 2 - We now live in a (mostly) digital world, where applications are the face or experience of many businesses. Where does SOASTA fit into this new world?

Topic 3 - Last summer, I was at VelocityConf and saw this massive display (for SOASTA) and it looked like the control center in movies for a Space Shuttle launch. Turns out it was the launch of the mPulse platform. It was very business centric, which was unique and unusual for a highly technical conference.

Topic 4 - Lots of talk about microservices and distributed applications. Also, lots of talk about how this becomes orders of magnitude more complex. How are application teams explaining this to their businesses, and how does SOASTA help them manage this?

Topic 5 - Mobile devices are everything these days, and they have very different usage/access patterns. From a Performance/Analysis perspective, what are some of the most important things companies need to think about?

Topic 6 - We’re starting to see more and more traditionally “non-technical” companies that will have massive application challenges in the future (e.g. connected vehicles). What’s your advice to them beyond just “be sure you’re testing early and often”?
