Also, Tim and Matt finally saw Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Alex saw Jurassic World: Dominion.

In addition to the movie discussions, now that Tim has been fired from Harry & the Hendersons 2: the Squatchening again, he’s helping Alex and Matt with the script for Hired Guns, but could some unexpected news ruin this exciting new collaboration?!

Jawsapalooza aka The 1916 Shark Attacks & The USS Indianapolis

In this episode Regina and Lynn share their love of sharks, particularly their love of all things Jaws related with two true life tales that lent inspiration to the movies.

Regina tells us the tale of the 1916 shark attacks on the New Jersey shore that inspired Peter Benchley's break away novel Jaws.  We all know Regina loves delving into that era in American history, and yet again she comes back with the glaring truth of just how little people knew about things we take for granted today.

Lynn brings us home with the real life horror story that fueled the character Quint's hatred for sharks, the story of the USS Indianapolis and the fate of the 1,196 man crew who went into the water.  Delving into the darker side of terrible we see how assumption, poor communication, and baseless blame can equal tragedy.

Do you like tropical settings? Michael Caine? Shoulder pads? A minimal amount of shark attacks? An obvious cash-grab? How about an unused voodoo shark curse plotline? Connor & Jon get their feet wet in discussing the film that created the modern blockbuster: Jaws! Probably the most well known limitation in film history that created the perfect horror/adventure film. They discuss how different(and not as good) it would be if the shark had worked perfectly and the beginnings of Spielberg's career and how this experience shaped his future films and collaborations.

    Jaws: Amity Island Welcomes You

    Jaws: Amity Island Welcomes You

This episode, a deep dive into the 45 year old proto-blockbuster that has dominated the conversation in this lost pandemic summer - Jaws.

That deep dive takes us to the island where Jaws was shot, Martha's Vineyard, as well as Nantucket, the nearby island where Jaws might have been shot if snow hadn't forced the ferry Production Designer Joe Alves was on to turn back towards the mainland.

Along the way, we'll meet father and son authors who both turned their off-islander experiences into hit Hollywood movies - We'll consider how Universal Studios Orlando tricked me into thinking Jaws was set in California - We'll reconcile our preconceived notions of the Vineyard as a rich person's playground with the fact that the island was chosen because it was lower-middle class enough to pass for economically vulnerable Amity Island - And we'll celebrate the performances of islanders, with special focus on Lee Fierro's work as grieving mother Mrs. Kintner.

Jaws (1975), The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

This week's Extra Milestone is so iconic that we may just need a bigger boat. Anthony Battaglia reunites with Sam to discuss two immensely significant blockbusters that have irreparably shaped the cinematic landscape. We start with a discussion on Steven Spielberg's Jaws, including our differing experiences with the movie, our appreciation for the writing and acting, differences from Peter Benchley's novel, a confession as to our shared fear of open water, and even an extremely hot take involving the infamous sequels! After we dry off from that conversation, we take an isolated look at Irvin Kershner's The Empire Strikes Back and how it changed Star Wars (and sequels in general) forever, why it maintains its effectiveness after dozens of viewings, why we can never view the Dagobah sequence the same way again, whether or not it contains the best lightsaber battle ever, and the dichotomy between good and evil that was solidified in this film.

    SHOW NOTES:

    • 00:03:30 – Jaws
    • 01:04:35 – The Empire Strikes Back

NEXT WEEK: To close out the packed month of June, we're returning to the films of Billy Wilder with The Apartment, and we're assembling a generous handful of Cinemaholics alumni to do so!

Music in this Episode: "Theme from Jaws" by John Williams & the Boston Pops Orchestra, and "Imperial March" by John Williams.

Although 2020 has given us a new reason to stay off the beaches, this year we kick off summer by returning to the original reason to stay out of the water! Jaws scared America away from the beach, catapulted Steven Spielberg's career, and left a lasting mark on pop culture. So what did the Squirms think when they got high and gave it a try>?

    Episode 34: Jaws (1975)

    Episode 34: Jaws (1975)

"You're gonna need a bigger boat" er stjernerne replikken i Dødens Gab.
