The Big Lebowski feat. Jake Tropila

The Big Lebowski feat. Jake Tropila

Film writer, editor, and podcaster Jake Tropila joins from Los Angeles to discuss the Coen Brothers' 1998 comedy 'The Big Lebowski', starring Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Julianne Moore, and Philip Seymour Hoffman. Though middlingly received both critically and commercially upon release, the film has gone on to become a genuine cult classic, launching a cottage industry of fan screenings, conventions, and even a religion.

We discuss the film's patchwork of influences, including larger-than-life characters withing the Coens' orbit and the works of author Raymond Chandler, especially as adapted by Robert Altman for his 1973 film 'The Long Goodbye'. Then we discuss the film's unrivaled cast, including a superb John Goodman, who turns in an awards-caliber performance as the gun-toting, militant bowling enthusiast Walter Sobchak. Finally, we discuss the film's windy, inarticulable plot, and the way that its mechanics might conceal a deeper level of criticism about the sociopolitical landscape of America on the eve of The End of History.

    S07E07: Horsemen

    S07E07: Horsemen
Horsemen seems to have gotten memory-holed immediately after the fest circuit (or...during production by much of the below-the-line talent?), and with good reason -- it's bafflingly poor, studded with visual clichés, its actors apparently undirected, its script evidently without access to a Bible despite basing its tortuously contrived serial-killer procedural plot on more than one book therein. It's got a grieving-family subplot that should have come to the foreground, and a couple of actors -- including Quaid! -- who could have carried that version of the movie, but the version we got is a disorganized Seven For Teens with a crumbly topping of dated kink-shaming. A lot of the cast is either straight-up wasted in this mess or doing more than they need to, but Quaid is actually not bad. "Come and see" (...sigh) what we mean in the latest episode of Quaid In Full. #61 - Dancer in the Dark

#61 - Dancer in the Dark

Dancer in the Dark by Lars von Trier with Kevin Ferguson

The “Cinephile Cuties” are ready to get devastated. That’s because they’re chatting about Lars von Trier’s ‘Dancer in the Dark.’ And to do so they are joined by a very special guest, the senior producer of NPR’s ‘Bullseye with Jesse Thorn,’ Kevin Ferguson. With his help, they dissect this very dreary movie. Plus, they put this film through their proprietary Fartsy Test. And Patrick recommends a drink pairing.

    53. Fargo (1996)

    53. Fargo (1996)

(A Ben & Tom episode - prepare for bone dry humour and challenges to the absurd.)

    Are you a Tight Arse?

You will read this, Darn Tootin!

Fargo's desolate space is chock-a-block with larger-than-life characters who inhabited only a tiny space in its baron wasteland but whose words and actions fill the screen.

Our first delve into the Coen brother's universe with an episode that, much like its source material, became filled with many colourful moments and events that left us scratching our heads in disbelief and riving around in despair.

William H Macy as Jerry Lindegaard is up there with one of the best depictions of a downtrodden down on his luck man-baby searching for his big break. This is my deal, YOU SEE!

Always nice to see Steve Buscemi, a man born to have millions of eyes set upon him; he would be wasted behind the counter of your local supermarket. Although many eyes would have seen him daily scanning your toilet paper, so I guess that could have worked as well.

There's no structure to these episode notes, you see; if the one person who reads them hadn't noticed already. Whatever spills out the arse on the day remains on the page. The art of writing is rewriting? Rubbish.

Shoutout to Peter Stormare for owning the bleach blond Grim Reaper look. (Shameless Plug) You can also find Peter hanging out with GameFloggers over at twitch on Until Dawn. Is our Twitch Channel utterly hopeless and on the verge of being binned? OHHH, you betcha, YEAHHHH!
