Embodying Herbal Messages in the Dreamtime with Katie Rose Browning

#016 - Do you ever work with herbs while dreaming?

Join us for a very special conversation with herbalist and flower essence practitioner Katie Rose Browning on the power of listening to and embodying herbal messages in the dreamtime.

We recorded this in the rainforest of Costa Rica where Katie and her family are stewarding and living in relationship with the land at Casa Vida Flor. So you will hear all the sounds of the environment including the river, birds, wind, rain, and children playing in the background.

It was a very dynamic experience! And we enjoyed connecting with this amazing land throughout our conversation.

In this episode, Katie offers profound insight into the magic and power of what can happen when we listen to and honor messages coming forward from the herbal realm in our dreams. She also shares about a very potent dream that directed her family to move and become stewards and deep listeners of the land at their home near the Children’s Eternal Rainforest in Costa Rica.

Katie also offers wisdom about her experience of living in reciprocity with the plants and the Earth. And she shares about her experience of working with flower essences for vibrational healing, and the importance of reconnecting with the cycles: of time, of the Earth, and of the moon.

Honoring Indigenous Traditional Ecological Knowledge with Dan Wahpepah

I’m deeply honored that Dan joined us as a guest on the Plant Spirit Podcast. And his message is so important for the times we are in!

In this episode, Dan shares profound insight into what it means to decolonize the mind, particularly when working with permaculture and other land based practices.

He also offers deep wisdom into:

    • How prayer opens up a circular conduit between yourself, the Universe, the person you’re praying for, and the Earth.
    • Re-indigenizing permaculture with Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK).
    • His Permaculture Foundations work with Megan Toben  at the Eco-Institute.
    • How important it is to connect with Indigenous people who have been taking care of the land for thousands of years.
    • Coming back into balance with our Elder relatives and learning the stories of the land
    • How we’re in a crossroads of prophecy at this time.
    • The importance of having a reciprocal relationship with the plants.
    • And he also shares the powerful story of the first Tobacco plant Asema, and how to be in right relationship with this sacred medicine plant.

Dan Wahpepah is from the Anishinaabe, Kickapoo and Sac & Fox tribes. He grew up with his community’s cultural ways and has been politically active with the American Indian Movement and spiritually active through tribal ceremonies. Dan started the Rogue Valley Pow Wow, the American Indian Cultural Center, and Red Earth Descendants. He's also a board member of Natives of One Wind Indigenous Alliance, Rogue Climate, and Pipeline Fighters. As part of his tradition, he is a Drum Keeper and Drum Chief.

Dan works with Traditional Ecological Knowledge and permaculture. And his life work is focused on the preservation of this Earth for future generations. He believes that “Permaculture combined with Traditional Ecological Knowledge is a powerful pairing.  To contribute to life is what we need to feel. We are moving into a giveaway society. The best way for us to train for this new paradigm is to garden. By gardening, we contribute to life while gaining a harvest, feeding pollinators, sequestering carbon, feeding sugars and carbon to the billions of microbes and miles upon miles of mycorrhiza, connecting to community for excess giveaway, connecting with the seasons, connecting.”

Music of the Plants in Making Medicine with Susan Bowers

Music of the Plants in Making Medicine with Susan Bowers

#005 - Have you ever heard of the Music of the Plants?

Join us for an intriguing conversation with herbalist Susan Bowers about her experience in making medicine with the Music of the Plants, a device first developed at Damanhur in the 1970’s and designed to translate the electromagnetic impulses of plants into melodies.

Susan is an herbalist and activist who lives her life in service to the plants and the Earth. She’s been practicing Herbal Plant Medicine for over 45 years. Her Grandmothers are Juanita, Marietta and Ruth, and she lives on the Port Gamble S’klallam tribal ancestral lands.

In this interview, Susan shares deep wisdom about what it means to be in right relationship with the plants. Here are some gems from her experience:

“Being in right relationship with plants, with the entire ecosystem of my garden and the wild places I forage means recognizing that all life is Sacred and Sentient. All life is interconnected.

My traditions have taught me that I must first sit with my plants and seeds in quiet. I then ask permission and give offerings, and listen to their reply. I explain what my intention is and who will receive help from the food and medicine they provide. I give gratitude to them for collaborating with me.

When making medicine this year I've been playing plant music with the Bamboo M, a Music of the Plants device. This adds another layer of healing to the medicine and food.

I feel more connected to the medicine because the music takes me out of my head and into my heart. That is key, being in your heart when you are working with the plant people. And they are happy to serve us if we acknowledge them and get permission.

The reciprocity between us is felt on a new level with the music. Science is now explaining what the ancient cultures knew. We are in this together, and a new paradigm has arisen and the healing of us all is happening now.”

In this episode, Susan shares about her experience connecting with Shane Mendonsa's work with Plant Music. To learn more about Shane's work, please visit his YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCpjl7axNrHYPh53gezouYxA and on BandCamp at https://shanemendonsa.bandcamp.com/

The Journey of Remembrance and Reconnection with Roxana Marroquin

#002 - In this episode, Roxana Marroquin of Agua de Jade Apothecary shares about the journey of remembrance and reconnection in healing with ancestral medicines. And there is such a sweet radiance beaming in her relationship with the plants and how she connects with them directly from the heart. We first recorded this interview for the Plant Spirit Herbalism Summit, and it was such a gem of a discussion that I wanted to share it with you here.

Roxana Marroquin (she/her/ella) is a spiritual herbalist, artist, art therapist, organizer and gardener. Trained under master herbalist Karen M. Rose of Sacred Vibes Apothecary, Roxana centers ancestral wisdom and Earth based spirituality in her herbal practice. Agua de Jade Apothecary is the vessel from which she creates and distributes herbal offerings, provides individual consultations, and facilitates sharing of knowledge among her community.

Roxana has facilitated herbal knowledge shares (workshops) at GreenThumb's 34th Annual GrowTogether Conference, Annual NYC Spiritual Herbalism Conference, Make The Road NJ, The Youth Farm, and various other community gardens, organizations, coffee shops, and pop up locations around her community of Hudson County, NJ and beyond.

A perpetual student of self, plants, and all her relations, Roxana is in a lifelong journey of remembrance and reconnection.

    July 2019 Herbal Forecast

    July 2019 Herbal Forecast

Herbalist Suzanne Stone of Moon Of Hyldemoer Herbals joins us to discuss her suggested plant allies for July 2019's astrology: Purple Loosestrife, Oxeye Daisy and St. Joan's/John's Wort. We hit on medicinal, magical, astrological, folkloric and cultural points of the plants while navigating the current transits. NOTE: I was attempting to record this in a live webinar format and it being Mercury's RX station conjunct Mars and squaring Uranus between the eclipses the audio came out terrible, with volume spikes and drops, cut outs and background noise that was impossible to remove. The talk is still worth it and listenable for those who dare!

Suzanne suggests a few titles on the topic of so-called "invasive species" :
The New Wild by Fred Pearce
Beyond The War On Invasive Species by Tao Orion
Invasive Plant Medicine by Timothy Lee Scott
