Elder Kyle S. McKay and Keith A. Erekson on the 200th anniversary of the angel Moroni's first visits to Joseph Smith and the coming forth of the Book of Mormon

On the evening of Sept. 21 and the morning of Sept. 22, 1823, the angel Moroni appeared to Joseph Smith, teaching him and revealing the nearby location of an ancient record written on gold plates — the Book of Mormon. He quoted scripture about the Restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ and the gathering of Israel. With the approaching 200th anniversary of Moroni’s visits — four total — the Church News podcast features Elder Kyle S. McKay, a General Authority Seventy and Church historian and recorder, and Keith A. Erekson, director of research and outreach for the Church History Department, talking about these historic visitations.

Episode 8: Everyone Loves a Good Throwback!

Episode 8 is coming in HOT! Amanda’s week consisted of Levi turning 11 months old and Ashley’s household has been fighting the flu. Celebrity spill the tea highlights KU Mens Basketball and Ryan Cabrera. During Go Off Ashley complains about people rushing her, especially in the checkout line at the grocery store, and Amanda STEAMING  about people continuously setting hot plates and drinks in front of little Levi. For our topic this week we are throwing it back to the 90s to 2000s and really giving every one some time for some  reflection….. on those AWFUL jelly sandals your mom used to make you wear! So… kick back, relax, and help us determine which 90s-2000s trends need to stay or go (although we have no clue who gave us this type of authority when we can hardly even dress ourselves)

Enhancing Multisensory Experiences: Perspectives from the Food & Beverage, and Flavor & Fragrance Industries

Enhancing Multisensory Experiences: Perspectives from the Food & Beverage, and Flavor & Fragrance Industries

This is episode #14 of the podcast and it’s Thursday, the 24th of March, 2022.

My guest today is professor Charles Spence, a world-famous experimental psychologist with a specialization in neuroscience-inspired multisensory design. He has worked with many of the world’s largest companies across the globe since establishing the Crossmodal Research Laboratory (CRL) at the Department of Experimental Psychology, Oxford University in 1997. Prof. Spence has published over 1,000 academic articles and edited or authored, 15 books (a sample is provided in the Notes). His work focuses on the design of enhanced multisensory food and drink experiences, through collaborations with chefs, baristas, mixologists, chocolatiers, perfumiers, and the food and beverage, and flavour and fragrance industries. Prof. Spence has worked extensively in the world of multisensory experiential wine and coffee and has also worked extensively on the question of how technology will transform our dining/drinking experiences in the future.

We started the discussion addressing how many senses do humans have, after which we jumped right into important questions related to sense harmony, sensory overload, sense congruency, dominance, and harmony.

The second part of the discussion moved toward technology (as I usually like to do), brainstorming about how can we use the senses to provide the best immersive experience in augmented, virtual, and mixed reality. Here is the show.

      Show Notes:

      - How many senses do humans have and use
      - Sensory dominance: Are vision and hearing our most important and most complex senses?
      - Looking at sensory combinations
      - How do senses interact?
      - How much do we know about individual differences in somatosensory stimulation and perception?
      - Considering cross-modal brain plasticity
      - The role of technology (i.e., AI / AR / VR) in shaping our awareness and use of the senses
      - Ethical implications

Leeway Home (P.2): Unboxing Consumer Needs Through Customization

Leeway Home (P.2): Unboxing Consumer Needs Through Customization

The Co-Founders of Leeway Home, Lyle Maltz and Sam Dumas return to discuss the process of developing a brand message and the role it plays in bringing a team together. Listen in as Jacqueline, Lyle, and Sam dive into the nuts and bolts of brand development, translating your idea from cool idea to actual product, and the most efficient way to communicate your ideas with your team.

      About Lyle:

A veteran business professional, Lyle Maltz graduated from Yale University, continuing his education at Columbia University, where he received his MBA. After years heading Vera Wang’s global licensing business, he left to gain a greater understanding of consumer insights and market research, and how they could best be used to drive growth strategy. He served as a Director at Kantar, then a part of the WPP family, working with luxury, lifestyle and retail brands to develop their marketing strategies. His clients included Tiffany, Ralph Lauren, Chanel, Estee Lauder, L’oreal and Michael Kors.

Learning from his past professional experience, Lyle saw an opportunity to reinvigorate the dusty tabletop space, a category in which the customer experience hadn’t changed in decades. By developing a deeper understanding of today’s consumer and their modern mindset, Lyle is excited to build Leeway into a brand that seeks to understand the consumer and what they want.

      About Sam:

An influencer in his own right, Sam Dumas began his career at Vanity Fair Magazine, climbing the ranks in a few short years to become the experiential lead for the magazine’s top events & initiatives.

In January of 2018, Sam was tapped by Bumble CEO & Founder Whitney Wolfe Herd to become Co-Founder and Head of Brand of Chappy, Bumble’s Gay Dating app. Sam built Chappy into a strong stand-alone brand that helped re-define digital dating amongst gay men. In late 2019, as part of Blackstone Group purchase of Magic Lab, the umbrella company that owned both Bumble and Chappy, Chappy’s user base merged with Bumble’s under a single, more inclusive app. Sam stayed on as LGBTQ advisor to Bumble to ensure a thoughtful and strategic transition, while setting his sights on his next startup.

As an avid consumer of the homewares category, and armed with the passion ignited by his previous roles with brand building, he set his sights on building the next experience-led, consumer driven lifestyle brand that addresses the needs of the home customer.

      About Leeway Home:

Leeway Home is a direct-to-consumer homewares brand rewriting the rules of home, starting with all-in-one kits to set your table. We combine ceramics, glassware and flatware into simple boxes, thoughtfully designed for you and how you live. Whether you’re in a big city or a small town, single or married, an at-home cook or professional takeout orderer, everyone has a seat at the table with Leeway Home. You do you—we’ll do the rest.

236: Are we ready to ditch our disposables?

From the 1st of June 2022 the Scottish government is banning single use plastic cutlery, plates, straws, stirrers, balloon sticks as well as polystyrene cups and food containers. If you need a plastic straw to eat or drink independently or for medical purposes then you’ll need to go the chemist to get one. But this is about more than plastics, we need to radically rethinking our throwaway society.

The Ditching Disposables project funded by Zero Waste Scotland is focussing on Portobello and Joppa to trial non-disposable alternatives and help businesses prepare for the new legislation. But it's actually

030A Bonus Episode (Book of Mormon): 1 Nephi Chapter 9

030A Bonus Episode (Book of Mormon): 1 Nephi Chapter 9

030A Bonus Episode (Book of Mormon): 1 Nephi Chapter 9

The next episode that will be released is Episode 10! It´s coming on the 2021-08-08. But since I don´t want you to have to wait a whole month for an episode so I decided to add in shorter bonus episodes in between. Once a week to be more exact! This weeks episode I will do another chapter from the Book of Mormon, which is an LDS scripture. We see it as another testament of Jesus Christ, to be used alongside with the Holy Bible. So I will read the whole book, chapter by chapter, and look for the spiritual elements that can be found it it and draw references to my own life. This is a very short episode, but don´t worry, we have recorded many new episodes so more are coming! And because todays episode is so short, we decided to release 1 Nephi 10 tomorrow!

Until next week: Be the Light. Share the Light. Spread the Light. Shine!

      LDS AND MEDIUM PODCAST BACKGROUND:
I was born into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, or LDS for short. All my life I felt awkward and out of place, not because of my religion, but because of my spiritual gifts. It was hard to combine the idea of what first seemed like two separate worlds. So my whole life I have tried. I have learnt more about my gifts, and stayed faithful to my faith. But then I heard people left the church because it seems impossible to combine the two. So I am here, to try and mend the rift. To show that it is possible to be both LDS and to have, and use, our spiritual gifts. I am not alone on this journey, but my sister, who just is waking up to her spiritual gifts is by my side and she will also share her story.

Jesus Christ, our older brother, was a healer. He asked us to love one another. So let´s follow in his footsteps. Please join me on this journey, let´s make a community of strong spiritual LDS, or whatever religion you belong to, and all work together to make this world a better place.

Episode 392: Piatti with Stacy Adimando

On today’s episode of THE FOOD SEEN, Stacy Adimando, Saveur magazine’s EIC, began and her pursuit of the most perfect antipasti as a way to find fullness in family, but during a solo trip to the most southwestern tip of Italy’s boot, she met her grandfather’s cousins, their kids, grandkids … and bonded over plates after plates of so-called appetizers. These dishes inspired her book, “Piatti: Plates and Platters for Sharing, Inspired by Italy”; whether we’re talking about her Grandma Stella’s Broccolini Frittata, or Nanny’s Veal Braciolini (taught to Adimando by her 100-year-old Great-Uncle Joe), these family recipes are the best parts of her Italian-American upbringing, and is proud to bring them to your families’ tables too.

Episode 99: Japanese Tableware with Elizabeth Andoh

On this week's episode of Japan Eats, author and Japanese cuisine specialist Elizabeth Andoh is back in studio to chat with host Akiko about Japanese tableware. Looks aren't the only important thing in Japanese utensils; plates, bowls, and chopsticks must be functional, adequate for the type of food and season of the year, and above all feel good in the hands and mouth.

Here are the links to the seasonal recipes for the fall that Elizabeth mentioned during the show:
