AYLI Podcast #88 - Jordan Poling

Not all house music commands you to jack your body. Some house music — cool, crystalline house music with delicate beats and melodies like a winter breeze — sets the soundtrack to a mood just as well as it turns up a dance-floor. That’s the shade of house music that Jordan Poling, a recent transplant to San Francisco from Brooklyn, explores in his productions and DJ sets. He came up in New York’s mid-aughts dance music scene, and cut his teeth at Halcyon, the city’s legendary record shop. His own productions, propelled by driving grooves and filled with intimate detail, take after NYC’s contemporary deep house sound, but feature his own unique twist. This Saturday, Aug. 31, Poling supports his friend and compatriot Levon Vincent — maybe the best-known of NYC’s new deep house maestros — for an intimate gig at Monarch.

Leveraging a Framework and Platform to Build Inclusive Cultures

Leveraging a Framework and Platform to Build Inclusive Cultures

Hello, listeners! Welcome back to Tech Forward. On this week’s episode, I spoke with Betty Ng, tech entrepreneur, author, and founder and CEO of Inspiring Diversity, LLC (“iD”). In order to build more inclusive and collaborative communities, iD works with organizations to drive profitability and sustainability through increased employee inclusion, engagement, and performance. Betty has co-authored “PO-LING POWER™: Propelling Yourself and Others to Success” with her mother (Po-Ling Ng) and regularly speaks on PO-LING POWER™ and other empowering topics. Today, we’ll be talking about the inspiration behind iD, and how this framework helps companies break down barriers to diversity and inclusion.

Though Betty was honored as a corporate trailblazer in 2015, she knew she was not pursuing her own vision for her authentic self. “I had a vision to be a successful social entrepreneur, not working in mergers and acquisitions.” Betty’s strength of vision came from her mother, a widowed immigrant woman with 4 young children who obtained 2 master’s degrees and devoted her life to helping her community. She instilled in Betty the belief that anything is possible, regardless of your background, as long as we help one another succeed. This belief was the bedrock for the PO-LING POWER framework and Inspiring Diversity.

In developing this framework, Betty says, “All roads led back to my mom.” Each aspect of the PO-LING framework — Priorities, Others, Lead, Inspire, Network, Grow — was a quality that her mother exemplified. Combined with POWER — Priorities, Obligations, Worthwhile activities, Energy, Resources — these acronyms form an evaluation, decision, and measurement matrix to propel individuals and groups to success while managing what matters.

This focus on collaboration and working towards mutual success makes the framework a natural fit for any company looking to build a more inclusive culture. The framework provides practical solutions for these organizations through a book, an app, videos of previous success stories, and supporting services such as coaching and workshops. Since changing existing organizational culture can be difficult, the framework is a practical, cost-effective, scalable, and mobile way to measure and track results. Despite the clear business case for increasing diversity and inclusion, many organizations do not see these efforts as imperative to their business. “Diversity events, training, and employee resource groups aren’t enough. Organizations need to put real actions, plans, resources, and opportunities behind their diversity and inclusion efforts. Inspiring Diversity is focused on helping organizations overcome these barriers.”

thank you so much for coming onto the show today and sharing your inspiring story. Thank you also to all my listeners tuning in, reviewing, and sharing the show. See you next week!

5 Things That Will Help You Get From Where You Are to Where You Want to Be - cont.
    by Dr. Krista Wells

    1. Find Your #Why

Baby steps can seem boring until you start thinking about why the destination they lead to really matters. I noticed the effects of this new mindset when my client heard about a job that truly inspired her; she quickly edited her resume, had a professional photo taken, posted an amazing LinkedIn profile, attended a local networking event connected to the new job, and became unstoppable in a matter of days after being stuck for months. She had found her “why” to propel her forward.

So if you’re feeling stuck on the “how,” try refocusing to think about the “why” instead.

    1. #Embrace Detours

On our roads to success, we’re often tempted to follow other people’s maps. However, most successful people tell me that, while they planned “straight line” routes, they ended up taking winding paths. But guess what? These scenic routes still got them to their destination!

Having a rough map is a great thing, but trust yourself to know when to get out the eraser and re-route. We’re often scared to start driving when we don’t know our paths, so we justify inaction by telling ourselves that sitting still is better than taking a step in the wrong direction.

    1. #Jump In

My sister used to have a skydiving business and customers would often ask her how to jump from an airplane. She would always respond with a laugh and say, “It’s not hard, just take your earrings off and jump!” Think of where in your life you need to “take your earrings off and jump!”

We often think that we need road maps with step-by-step directions toward success when usually we just need to jump. Even if you aren’t finished with your vision board, your goals still need modifying, your morning routine isn’t consistent, or your game plan feels more like a rough draft, just get moving!

Actions don’t have to be accomplished in huge leaps; change can occur through small, incremental steps. Just trust your life vision and allow your intuition to guide you as you take baby steps toward a better version of yourself. Before you know it, you may even find yourself leaping forward on your path to success.

    1. #Act as if …

A military spouse once said to me, “Krista, I don’t think you get it, there are no jobs here! There are hundreds of applications just to work at the gas station on base! There’s no job for me here!” I responded by pulling her back from her visions of failure with the question, “What is your dream job?”

While the idea of a dream job initially seemed foreign to this spouse, she eventually shared that she had once had a fun and fulfilling job at a department store cosmetics counter. At this point in her story, however, she returned to negative thoughts, talking about her horrible boss. I reminded her of the positive aspects of that position, asking her whether or not she would enjoy another job in cosmetics. When she began to speak about the lack of opportunities, I interrupted her, asking, “What would it look like if it were impossible to fail? What if you knew that you would be successful?”

She was stumped at first, but then the ideas began to flow. She actually got excited brainstorming, thinking about what “not failing” would look like.

    1. #Have Faith

We often make lists of tasks to accomplish when we’re feeling jazzed and energized, but when it comes to putting these plans into action, we second guess ourselves, doubt our abilities, and, in short, give into our fears. What we need in order to continue on our paths to success is the opposite of fear—faith.

Believe in yourself. Have faith. The work process you implemented in order to fulfill your dream will lead you to success. As you work hard on developing new skills, adopt positive habits, and make new lifestyle commitments, you take steps toward your goals.

and how to move over it gracefully, if you are a military spouse seeking success!

Join us for The Military Spouse Show!

Don’t become stuck in the divide between knowing and doing. Follow these steps and before you know it, you’ll be well on your way toward success!

Military spouses want to be successful in their marriages, their work, and their health, but often the business of military life can distract from taking steps toward success. Spouses have life visions and career goals, but their aspirations are put on hold for the well-being of others. Don’t let these commitments become excuses for letting your journey to success go stagnant.

We work with many military spouses who are ready to define their personal journeys and take the first steps toward creating their ideal lives, and it’s important to understand that these changes can be made even in the midst of “chaos.” By moving toward their goals, they come out feeling fulfilled and even more able to support their families and friends than they were before they made themselves a priority.

We refer to these things as the “knowing/doing gap,” a term coined by Stanford Business professors Jeffrey Pfeffer and Robert Sutton in reference to businesses. We find it’s not just companies that struggle with implementing their plans, but rather many individuals. We know what we want to do and sometimes we even know how to do it, but we can’t quite put that knowledge into action.

Military spouses, including ourselves, catch ourselves saying we’re too tired to work out, even though we know that exercise increases our energy. Or sometimes we’re too irritated with our spouses to have certain conversations, even though we know that open communication helps nurture relationships. We become too frustrated with work to attract the raises and promotions we desire. We want to be entrepreneurs but doubt that we can ever really be successful at business.

04 - How to Rev Up Your Morning Routine

04 - How to Rev Up Your Morning Routine

On today’s show we are talking about How You Can Rev Up Your Morning Routines and Why It Matters.

Military spouses have so many things to balance. We are often so busy coping with the inevitable stress of deployment, moving, and trying to take care of everyone else that we end up neglecting our own needs. We want to spend more time on self-care but often don’t know where to start.

There are many examples out there listing the morning routines of wildly successful people, but morning routines are actually very personal. There are no one-size-fits-all solutions. Rather than simply adopting someone else’s routine, you need to design a practice that has staying power to make sure that you’ll be able to maintain it over a long period of time.

We find that developing a successful routine is less about the particulars and more about the elements that set a person’s individual stage for success. It’s important to think about the things that really motivate you. Hopefully, these suggestions will give you some ideas for how to develop a fabulous morning routine of your own.

02 - Easy Breezy Goal Setting

02 - Easy Breezy Goal Setting

January is a great time of the year to take a deep breath and think about what you really want for the new year. However, after coaching clients for over a decade, I often see people beating themselves up when it comes to setting goals. I should really lose weight, or I wish I made more money, and the list goes on. So if you are one of those people who forces yourself to think of a list of resolutions and dusty goals, let’s spice things up and make it a lot more fun. Here are some tips and tricks that will put you in the right mood to attract success.

    1. Zap Those Little Frustrations Ten years ago during my Coach University training, we wrote down our frustrations and distractions and then zapped them one by one. Toss the holey socks, put a basket of extra mittens in the kitchen for the kids, or ask the Good Lord not to give you the keys to the woman across your cubicle who is trying to drive you insane. By deciding we aren’t going to deal with these little things, we allow big things into our lives much more effortlessly. Write a list of 10 very easy things that, if you tackled once and for all, would immediately elevate your mood and help attract success.
    1. Focus on Your High Scores I have clients who fill in their coaching wheel and before they are even finished blurt out, “well, I have a 2 in the area of my finances!” Or “See, my career is a 1! That is why I hired you!” I will remind them that although they didn’t get a job they applied for, they still did much they should be proud of! Perhaps they were caring for young kids or doing volunteer work. We tend to easily point out areas where we fall short and overlook areas where we rock! Capitalize on your strengths!
    2. Be In Love With Your Vision The whole law-of-attraction model is based on setting ourselves up to attract success more effortlessly and being calm enough to listen to our intuition and take necessary actions that support what we really want. So, when you are writing down your goals or creating a vision board, make sure your list and images elevate your mood and keep you in a positive vibration. What you feel when you look at your goal list or your vision board is part of what allows you to turn these wants into reality.
    3. Try New Systems That Support Your Goals Consider a new process versus just a goal. Instead of promising to lose 10 pounds in 12 months, chunk it down and focus more on creating new systems rather than promising a particular outcome. It’s a lot more fun and will set you up for success. For example, maybe you decide to cook healthy food on Sunday nights for the winter and once that is going well, you add walking the kids to school in the spring. You aren’t focusing on weight loss, you are focused on creating systems that inevitably lead to success.
    4. Add Something Super Fun To Your Life Now What did you love doing as a kid that you can try again as an adult? Or do you see your kids enjoying something fun that perhaps you could try? For example, I asked my kid’s tennis instructor for a couple of lessons and it’s a lot more fun for me to go to a tennis lesson than to go to the gym. By choosing to do something fun, other “old goals” such as get more sleep, drink more water, or socialize with new people, become much more effortless.
