All of the foundational truths found in the Book of Genesis are crucial for us to understand, but none are more crucial than the foundational truths found in chapter 3. Chapter 3 of Genesis is where it all went wrong. It's where God's good and perfect creation was left reeling by sin.  Adam and Eve's life was absolutely perfect. Why couldn't they obey the one and only rule they were given by God? Why did God allow them to be tempted? Without God, we are completely helpless and can do nothing of any eternal value. We need God to open our minds to understanding His Word, and open our hearts to receive the saving work of Jesus and so the Holy Spirit can indwell in us. But while God does all of the heavy lifting, that doesn't mean that we don't have a part to play in our sanctification. We have a big part!

When you read all of the prophetic books together, it can seem like God is saying much of the same things over and over. But that should be a great encouragement to us! God does not change! What He rebuked and reprimanded His people about in Joel are the same things He rebukes and reprimands His people about in Malachi! We don't have to wonder what God wants from us or if He will accept us - He's written it all down for us! And that includes how we can know how we will fare on the Day of the Lord!

In the minor prophetic book of Micah, we get more indictments and judgments against the nations of Israel and Judah. God also has some harsh words for those who lead His people astray with false teaching. Warnings that false teachers today should heed! But our gracious Father doesn't leave His people with no hope. Micah is given restoration promises - promises that point to both Jesus' First Coming and His Second Coming. Most of know the story of Jonah, but maybe there's a lot that we missed! And maybe the parts we missed are the most significant parts of the book. The book of Jonah is so much more than a book about a guy running from God who gets thrown into the sea, swallowed by a big fish, was saved by God, and then learns his lesson that you can't run from God. In the book of Amos, Amos spends over a chapter prophesying to the northern nation of Israel that God is going to bring judgement on their enemies - even their brother enemy, the southern nation of Judah. And you can imagine how psyched the Israelites were about that! We can imagine them high-fiving each other and breaking out the champagne. But they better hold that champagne because Amos has over 7 chapters of prophecy about God's judgement on THEM! And Amos has something to say to us, too!
