Endow the king with your justice, O God, the royal son with your righteousness. May he judge your people in righteousness, your afflicted ones with justice. Psalms 72:1-2
May his name endure forever; may it continue as long as the sun. Then all nations will be blessed through him, and they will call him blessed. Psalms 72:17

Psalm 71 saw David wondering why at his age he should be threatened and chased by his enemies. Despite his predicament, he never stopped looking towards God. It was a wonderful example of regardless of our circumstances, our focus needs to be on the Lord and be confident He'll take us through it. 

Psalm 72 is the last psalm of Book 2 of Psalms. It is a prayer that David’s heirs might be faithful kings. That means ruling God’s people well, protecting the poor and needy, and bringing blessing to all nations of the earth. Like Psalm 2, this song looks forward to a worldwide rule that embraces in full what the Messiah will accomplish. The OT anticipates the ultimate heir of David, who will take the throne and bring God’s light to all nations.

Join me in reading Psalm 72 and see how God delivered David from his previous troubles to having a son that will rule the nation. Know that God will deliver His people and be encouraged!

Rounding out this 3-part "Summer Of Psalms" series, this episode takes us to Psalm 72.  It is a prayer and proclamation for the coming king.  In many ways it applies to King Solomon who would take the throne after the reign of his father, King David.  But even more, the passage applies to the ultimate King, Jesus Christ.  When we read through this chapter and start inserting Jesus' name into these attributes, it adds a freshness and a perspective that is eye-opening.  Truly it is His Kingdom that will never end.  It is His rule that will be one of everlasting peace.  He will vanquish all His foes.  Join Derek for this last Summer Of Psalms podcast episode...it's one you won't want to miss!

We all need a king who is truly for us. Not just when we are strong or good, but when we are weak and anything but good. Not just when we know where we are going, but when we have lost our way. We need a king who is truly there for us, who will not abandon us, even when we ignore him, doubt him, blame him or turn our backs on him. The good news is that we have a kind like that! A king that knows our human vulnerability, sees us as precious, and is with us now and forever.

Over  de laatste woorden geproken
Tsja, dan zijn we vier weken nadat we begonnen zijn om over deze Psalm na te denken. En wat is het dan mooi en een zegen om meg de woorden die we zojuist gelezen hebben te mogen eindigen.

Geloofd zij voor eeuwig Zijn heerlijke Naam; laat heel de aarde met Zijn heerlijkheid vervuld worden. Amen, ja, amen. Hier eindigen de gebeden van David, de zoon van Isaï.

Ik met eraan denken dat wanneer iemand overlijdt of overleden is we bijzondere aandacht hebben voor de laatste woorden van de overledene. Heeft hij of zij nog iets gezegd.

Over wonderen gesproken

Gezegend zij de HEERE God, de God van Israël (vergelijk de andere doxologieën, die op dezelfde manier beginnen.

Dit vers begint met het misschien wel bekende woord voor je Braracha, zegen, gezegend zij de HEERE. En we hebben daar een paar dagen geleden kort bij stil te staan om de HEERE, JHWH te zegenen. En hier begint dit vers vanmorgen mee. En daar mogen jij en ik vanmorgen ook mee beginnen. Ik denk eigenlijk nu ik dit zo opschrijf dat er eigenlijk geen beter begin van de dag te bedenken is dat wanneer je je ogen opent dat je de nieuwe dag begint met de woorden: Gezegend zij de HEERE God, de God van Israel.

Over Zijn naam gesproken
Terwijl ik deze verzen lees en op mij in laat werken moet ik ineens denken aan de woorden van een oude Psalm 103 met de woorden:

Barmhartig en genadig is de HEERE,
Hij zal niet voor altijd ter verantwoording roepen,
niet voor eeuwig handhaaft Hij Zijn toorn.
Hij doet ons niet naar onze zonden
en vergeldt ons niet naar onze ongerechtigheden.
Want zo hoog de hemel is boven de aarde,
zo is Zijn goedertierenheid machtig over wie Hem vrezen.
Zo ver het oosten is van het westen,
zo ver heeft Hij onze overtredingen van ons gedaan.
Zoals een vader zich ontfermt over zijn kinderen,
zo ontfermt de HEERE Zich over wie Hem vrezen.
Want Híj weet wat voor maaksel wij zijn
en blijft bedenken dat wij stof zijn.
De sterveling – zijn dagen zijn als het gras,
als een bloem op het veld, zo bloeit hij.

Over een omgedraaide wereld gesproken
Laat ik vanmorgen maar direct met de spreekwoordelijke deur in huis vallen. Ik weet niet hoe uw gebedsleven er uit ziet, maar veelal hebben wij onze wensenlijst wel klaar liggen en vragen God om al onze, met alle eerbied gesproken wensen, hoe goed en oprecht bedoeld ook, te vervullen.

Over rijken en armen gesproken
De voorgaande keer vertelde ik dat het Hebreeuwse woord voor Redder en Verlosser dat hier gebruikt wordt begint met een jat, een hand zoals wij in het Nederlands zeggen. Het heeft de betekenis van vasthouden. Hoe mooi is die gedachte

De bewering dus dat hij de arme, de ellendige, de geringe, te hulp zal komen en zal helpen, sparen, verlossen en van geweld zal bevrijden is in de Hebreeuwse tekst geïndividualiseerd, met andere woorden heel persoonlijk gemaakt. Onze Nederlandse taal is dat, en dat is zo jammer, niet meer terug te vinden. Onze taal is daar te arm, te beperkt voor.

 Over de Redder gesproken

We willen vanmorgen stil staan bij het werk van JHWH. Hij is namelijk een Redder en een Helper. Hij is daar namelijk in gespecialiseerd.
 
 Hij wordt zelfs door Johannes de Redder van de wereld genoemd. We zijn in Johannes toeschouwer van een bijzondere gebeurtenis als hij in Samaria is, bij je weet wel, inderdaad, die vrouw…

Over Gods heerschappij gesproken

Ik lees het laatste vers nog maar eens:

11Ja, alle koningen zullen zich voor Hem neerbuigen,
alle heidenvolken zullen Hem dienen.

Wanneer je deze dingen tot je door laten dringen en voor waar aanneemt en zo laat staan zoals het er staat, wat zal dat dan een geweldige tijd zijn. Wat moet er dan nog veel plaatsvinden. Ik wil niet somber zijn hoor, maar in de tijd waarin wij leven is er sprake van een nagenoeg tegenover gestelde situatie sprake.

Over de Koningin van Sjeba gesproken

Vandaag denken we na over de woorden van het laatst gelezen vers:

10De koningen van Tarsis en de kustlanden
zullen schatting brengen;
de koningen van Sjeba en Seba
zullen schatten aanvoeren.

Het eerste waar ik aan moet denken zijn de woorden die we gisteren gelezen hebben over Tyrus, waarvan we lazen dat het een ongelooflijk welvarende havenstad was waar landen vanuit de toenmalige wereld aanmeerden om hun waren te brengen.
