023 - Going to the FBI National Academy: Ryan Miller

023 - Going to the FBI National Academy: Ryan Miller

Today I'm talking to Major Ryan Miller from the Overland Park Kansas Police Department.  Ryan just returned home a few months ago from the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia.  The National Academy is an executive leadership training program for law enforcement professionals and Ryan is going to give us a look inside to see what the "NA" is all about.

Listen to what he says about the selection process, the weekend field trips, what an average day of classes looks like, and the physical fitness tests and requirements.   You will especially want to hear about the famous "yellow brick road" obstacle course.

If you think your career might take you to top levels of law enforcement leadership, the FBI National Academy might be part of your preparations for that goal.

Sharbari Ahmed Is In The Writers' Room

Sharbari Ahmed Is In The Writers' Room

Sharbari Zohra Ahmed is a Bangladeshi-American writer and was on the writing team for the ABC show Quantico, making her the first woman of Bangladeshi origin to write for a network show.

We talk about why she never thought she would get picked to walk into the writers’ room for the show, why the show didn’t focus on Priyanka Chopra’s cultural background, the reason she was heavily trolled online for an episode she didn’t write, why there is still a lack of diversity behind the scenes and how that affects stories revolved around minority families, and the reasons South Asians still have a hard time supporting one another when it comes to the arts.

We discuss the reason her family fled from Bangladesh while she was just 3 weeks old, how that move shaped her life and inspired her creative journey, and why identity and a strong female protagonist has been a central theme in a lot of her writings.

She discusses her debut novel, Dust Under Her Feet, and her current projects including Rickshaw Girl by Mitali Bose Perkins, which she adapted for the screen.

Ep. 14: Blair Underwood - Confident, Casual, and Cool

Tori reunites with a great spirit, actor, producer… storyteller, an iconic esquire in television. He is a proud son, father, and husband, and an enlightened spirit of the universe. Beginning a career in the eighties, this culture maker and outlier has managed to do something very rarefied with his life - be a Black man who identifies with his community, honors his family and people, stays true to himself, and be a confident, casual, cool, and kind soul.  We’ve all seen him on LA Law, Sex and the City, Set It Off, and Netflix’s Self Made. Most recently, he was nominated for a 2021 Tony Award for Best Performance By An Actor In A Leading Role in Broadway's "A Soldier's Play," with the award show airing sometime this year. More than a friend, Blair is like family and this incredible conversation is a tribute to his beloved mother, Marilyn. They talk about how he defines himself, his entrée into acting, his love of theatre, his role models, and so much more! Here’s to one of the great ones, Blair Underwood.

    Episode 6: Veteran Days

    Episode 6: Veteran Days

Days 32 to 38 of the Duty, Honor, America Tour took us through Veterans Day, the 9/11 Memorial at the Pentagon, and Arlington National Cemetery in Washington DC. We continued to make contact family, friends and classmates as we made our way through the mid-Atlantic states of Pennsylvania, Delaware (our tenth state), Maryland, and Virginia. I cycled every day of this week, except the day after Veterans Day, where we stayed at Debra’s folks place in McLean, Virginia. One day was a trip through Eastern Pennsylvania on the Sunday before Veterans Day where I stopped to see a parade celebrating service. Another was a roundtrip from Fort Meade to the US Naval Academy and back and another, on Veterans Day, was a trip into Washington, DC, by the Capitol, to the Pentagon Memorial.

Robyn Grable is the chief executive officer of Veterans ASCEND, which she founded in 2018 to bring veterans and employers together, improving corporate bottom lines as well as the lives of America’s service heroes and their families.

Her unwavering commitment to veteran employment is well-served by her corporate and military experience, including more than 30 years of private sector human resources after nine years of service in the U.S. Navy. Her ongoing study of America’s veteran workforce have made her a leading voice on the barriers and keys to success for their employment. She is a seasoned speaker and media resource, earning respect and praise from her peers.

A native of Richmond, Indiana, Robyn holds a master’s in psychology focused on Leadership Coaching. Her capstone project during her graduate studies emphasized coaching military veterans during their transition back to the civilian workforce. Committed to giving back, Robyn has volunteered for American Red Cross, The MS Society, United Way, March of Dimes, Upstate Warrior Solution, IVMF Mentor Program, and Veterans Treatment Court. She is a member of SHRM and serves on the Workforce Readiness Council of the Greenville SHRM chapter.

Today she is focused entirely on ensuring veterans are recognized for their skills, valued for their talent and that America’s employers realize the full value and skills of America’s heroes, poised in the civilian workforce to truly ascend.

A recruiter came to Robyn’s high school and she saw the Navy as her ticket out of her small town and decided to join the military. It was 1979 and during the Cold War. People didn’t understand or want women in the military and she found that to be a challenge. When it came time to pick her career field nine out of the ten jobs she wanted were not available to her because her gender. She ended up picking Data Processing and it was a good career field for her while she was in Iceland. In Iceland she met her future husband and had to move to Florida for a year before being stationed with her husband in Maine.

Shortly after getting stationed together her daughter was born. Her husband had just come home from deployment, they were finally living together and she was adjusting to being a mom. And it was difficult, but they were able to make it work and she was able to segment her life in the military and her job as a mom. When they got orders to Pearl Harbor she asked to be assigned to a ship. At the time, women could not be on a ship with dependents. She would have had to give up legal custody of her daughter to do this. And this wasn’t something she was willing to do. Nor was it a requirement for her male counterparts. She decided to become an officer so she could change the military. She got her package together and in the end her package wasn’t even opened by the board. This crushed her. At the same time, she hadn’t signed her reenlistment paperwork before she left for training and decided after that event, she was ready to leave the Navy behind.

Because of that error she didn’t have a plan to leave the military. She didn’t get any help with her transition and she made her way to Florida to start her new life. She walked away from the military and her veteran community. It was 22 years later that she got connected with the military veteran community.

It's intervention time and you know it. Many of us have it: PHONE ADDICTION. And we got your back, even though Nnekay is going to go through heavy withdrawals through out the episode.  But first Nnekay and James have a different kind of addiction: binge watching and it is a battle royal between Quantico vs. Homeland vs. Scandal. Also James seems to be quite the socialite these days and witnessed the truth about what happens to a gaggle of girls when they go out clubbing, and who happened to flock towards a gay club: GIRL DOWN! Getting down to business James is going to break down how and why you're addicted to your phone- it's like an addictive casino in your pocket, especially when it comes to your dating apps (aka hookups). Nnekay applauds the social media site Nextdoor because it is FINALLY adding parameters to correct it's users from racially profiling each other! Hooray for change! .  In this Quizlet Korner Nnekay has much to say about White Feminism especially in regards to Lena Denam and Amy Schummer. Plus James has your Back to School sex tips!
