Polyphony and protest with Windborne, loops and language with Allara

Polyphony and protest with Windborne, loops and language with Allara

Windborne are a vocal quartet from New England in the US. Their tagline is 'old songs, bold harmonies' and their varied repertoire puts Corsican polyphony next to 17th Century English protest songs. They’ve found a huge following online in recent years, thanks in part to a performance outside of Trump Tower. They’re in the country for a string of local shows and festival appearances and they perform live in our music studio.

Yorta Yorta musician and storyteller Allara is also in our studio this week. Allara brings her poetry to life armed with a double bass, looping pedal and electronics. She chats to Andy about learning her Yorta Yorta Language and the enduring legacy of her old bandmate Archie Roach (she’s performing on the Archie Roach Foundation stage at this year’s Port Fairy Folk Festival).

S11 E31: Delaware State of the Arts - The Yuletide Singers

Andy Truscott speaks with Deb DeHart (Wilmington, DE), the founder of The Yuletide Singers.

The Yuletide Singers are an ensemble of highly experienced, professional voices that blend to recreate the unique sound of Victorian-era carolers. Dressed in elegant costumes, the quartet sings familiar, traditional Christmas carols in four-part a cappella harmony. The combination of period costumes and Victorian carols evoke the spirit of a time gone by. Numerous country clubs, retirement communities, weddings, corporate and private parties, and small towns have also commissioned The Yuletide Singers for their holiday entertainment.

    A Quartet About A King - Psalm 2

    A Quartet About A King - Psalm 2

    PSALM 2

The Reign of the Lord’s Anointed.

1 Why are the nations in an uproar

And the peoples devising a vain thing?

2 The kings of the earth take their stand

And the rulers take counsel together

Against the Lord and against His cAnointed, saying,

3 “Let us tear their fetters apart

And cast away their cords from us!”

4 He who sits in the heavens laughs,

    The Lord scoffs at them.

5 Then He will speak to them in His anger

And terrify them in His fury, saying,

6 “But as for Me, I have installed My King

    Upon Zion, My holy mountain.”

7 “I will surely tell of the decree of the Lord:

He said to Me, ‘You are My Son,

    Today I have begotten You.

8 ‘Ask of Me, and I will surely give the nations as Your inheritance,

And the very ends of the earth as Your possession.

9 ‘You shall abreak them with a rod of iron,

You shall shatter them like earthenware.’ ”

    10 Now therefore, O kings, show discernment;

Take warning, O judges of the earth.

11 Worship the Lord with areverence

    And rejoice with trembling.

12 Do homage to the Son, that He not become angry, and you perish in the way,

For His wrath may soon be kindled.

How blessed are all who take refuge in Him!

An Invitation & An Invoice: Is Charging Wedding Guests OK?

An Invitation & An Invoice: Is Charging Wedding Guests OK?

The average Australian wedding now costs a whopping $36,000, and while for many people that amount of money is simply unobtainable, it seems more and more couples are finding new ways of raising extra cash to have the the big day of their dreams.

One of those methods is an increasing trend for brides and grooms to ask friends and family to chip in for the event, to cover everything from the meal, to extravagant extras like fireworks and luxury honeymoons, but is that ok?

The Quicky speaks to a wedding expert, and a couple of married women to find out whether this is fair game, or if it's a very rude way of getting other people to fund a ridiculously over the top wedding that you really can't afford.
