Episode 51: "He Definitely Has Some Big Feelings": Small Dogs and Reactivity with Bernadette Tow of Hershey the Weenie
Bernadette Tow had always wanted a dachshund but didn't grow up with dogs. Her husband surprised her about five years ago with the option of bringing home a puppy, and raising Hershey inspired her to learn more about dog training and behavior. After a career switch, she earned a Diploma in Canine Behaviour Science and Technology (Dip. CBST) from CASI (Companion Animal Sciences Institute), and is studying with the Academy for Dog Trainers. She is a co-trainer with Raintown Dog Training in Vancouver, BC, Canada and teaches puppy, basic manners, and tricks classes. She also works part-time at Petite Paws Playcare, which is a small dog daycare. We discussed how she ended up with Hershey, handling reactivity in an apartment, and why she switched careers. Getting Triggered (Why It Happens And What To Do About It)

Getting Triggered (Why It Happens And What To Do About It)

129Ā  We almost all get triggered (upset, reactive, bothered, suddenly overcome with emotion) at times in our intimate relationship, especially as highly sensitive people. Although so common, itā€™s also a big contributing factor in marital unhappiness.

To put an end to the yucky feelings and damaging effects that being triggered can have on your marriage, youā€™ve got to learn whatā€™s going on when you get triggered, why it happens (it might not be what you think it is), whoā€™s causing you to be triggered, and how to calm and even outgrow your triggers.

Listen in for all of that, and to hear about the 3 things that cause certain words, tones of voice, expressions on your partner's face, things they do, or events to be triggering trigger to you, and what it will take to ease or eliminate those triggers altogether (and what won't work!).Ā

With personal and client stories woven throughout, this episode gets you started on the path of working through what upsets you and your sensitive system compassionately, so you can put an end to being triggered and have the light, connected, supportive relationship you were born for as a sensitive woman.

    Showing Grace on Social Media

    Showing Grace on Social Media

All this week weā€™ve been looking at Paul Trippā€™s new book, Reactivity: How The Gospel Transforms our Actions and Reactions, and what it means to respect the dignity of others, especially as we and our children learn how to best glorify God on social media. Tripp asks, what does it mean to treat people with dignity? Tripp reminds us that when we find ourselves in disagreements with others, we must see them as human beings. This means that when we are tempted to see or treat them as less, we must remind ourselves that they are divine image bearers. In addition, Tripp says that we must think of others as never too lost to be beyond redemption. Nobody is beyond the reach of Godā€™s grace. No one is lost a cause. He writes, there is no sin so great, no darkness so deep, and no rebellion so strong that it lives beyond the rescuing, convicting, forgiving, transforming, and delivering power of Godā€™s grace. Parents, teach your kids to show the same measure of grace to others, that God has shown to them.

    Showing Humility on Social Media

    Showing Humility on Social Media

All this week we are looking at Paul Trippā€™s new book, Reactivity: How The Gospel Transforms our Actions and Reactions, and what it means to respect the dignity of others, remembering that all human beings are divine image bearers, especially as we and our children learn how to best glorify God on social media. Tripp asks, what does it mean to treat people with dignity? In world where we tend to attack others over our differences, Paul Tripp tells us that we need to resolve to respond to differences with appreciation and grace. Scripture calls us to unity and not uniformity. God has made us different from one another in many ways. We need to approach each other with humility, kindness, graciousness, appreciation, patience, and grace. Can you imagine how the social media landscape and all of our personal interactions would be transformed if we approached each other in this way? Your kids will be living with social media and technology for the rest of their lives. Now is the time to train them well.

    Loving Others on Social Media

    Loving Others on Social Media

All this week we are looking at Paul Trippā€™s new book, Reactivity: How The Gospel Transforms our Actions and Reactions, and what it means to respect the dignity of others, as all human beings are divine image bearers, especially as we and our children learn how to best glorify God on social media. Tripp asks, what does it mean to treat people with dignity? He says that we need to resolve to intentionally do no harm to anyone. Tripp writes, ā€œScripture clearly forbids that we would act in any way to harm our neighbor. The Bible prohibits murder, forbids any act of vengeance, calls us to be angry without sinning, and commands us not to gossip. Scripture is clear that all of our responses to one another are to be shaped and directed by love, even if that person is your enemy.ā€ This guidance from Paul Tripp is so timely as we work to navigate a social media world that seems to celebrate anger and gossip. Parents, model well these good social media habits, teaching your children to do the same.

    Respecting Others on Social Media

    Respecting Others on Social Media

All this week we are looking at Paul Trippā€™s new book, Reactivity: How The Gospel Transforms our Actions and Reactions, and what it means to respect the dignity of others, as all human beings are divine image bearers, especially as we and our children learn how to best glorify God on social media. Tripp asks, what does it mean to treat people with dignity? He says that we must resolve to treat every person with respect, no matter what. This is a kind of respect that doesnā€™t have to be earned, but rather it is an honor given simply because you bear the image of God. Tripp tells us that we must be careful not to give ourselves permission to be disrespectful and cruel to others just because they are the enemy of what we think is good, true, and beautiful. We are called to resolve to respect others not because of what we think of them, but because of who God has created and declared them to be. Tomorrow, weā€™ll continue to look at Trippā€™s guidance for us and for our kids.Ā

Talking the Versatility of Gun Dog Training with Jo Laurens

    What to listen for:

"Basic gun dog training is just good general dog training, really. Itā€™s outside, in a natural environment, in a sort of rural environment where you have all the distractions or environmental reinforcers that every dog is exposed to.ā€

Discover the world of gun dog training and its incredible benefits for both dogs and dog trainers in this engaging conversation with Jo Laurens, author, instructor, podcaster, and gun dog trainer. Not only will you learn about the foundations of gun dog training, but you'll also see how itā€™s beneficial to your dogā€™s overall behavior and obedience.

Our hosts Robin Greubel and Crystal Wing chat with Jo about the essential skills for gun dog training and how they can be translated into general dog training for any breed. You'll learn how understanding the environment as a potential reinforcer can help build a reliable recall and well-trained dog, as well as the benefits of breaking up the chain of behaviors to keep the dog guessing and learning. They also emphasize how these techniques can be used in force-free methods, leading to happier and more successful dogs and trainers.

Stay tuned as they explore Jo's online gun dog training academy, her book Force-Free Gundog Training: The Fundamentals for Success, and the accompanying Workbook. Plus One

    Plus One

So you like dogs and want to add one, should you?Ā  Let me tell you about two very similar conversations I had this week about two families wanting to add a plus one.Ā  The results are not the same, but the conversations are of the same flavor.Ā  Ā If anything, I hope you learn a little bit about what to consider when adding a dog into the home.Ā  When is it the right time? Who should you add? We are trying to build a happy home and adopting a dog, even a puppy, isn't always the answer.Ā Ā

    I Am Reacting

    I Am Reacting

On this episode, I am reacting to how a certain person was helping a rescue pup overcome her reactivity.Ā  I TRY to stay in my own lane, but I just couldn't any longer seeing this poor pup get harmed in the attempt to "cure" the reactivity.Ā  No worries, this is not a bashing episode.Ā  I will explain the why and what I would do instead as a teacher to help my fearful pup.Ā  I want my pup to feel safe and comforted.Ā  I want to use up to date research in my approach.Ā  Prong collars have GOT TO GO! Take a listen!Ā

    Strategic Anger

    Strategic Anger

111Ā  Anger is not a bad emotion. It can be a useful fuel for positive change in our relationships. But in our modern relationships, it most often isn'tā€¦

Thatā€™s because we tend to over-indulge in it, and react out of it. So it ends up doing more harm than good in our marriages.

If you find yourself annoyed, frustrated, resentful, or angry somewhat often at your partnerā€“and you think you may show it (even if only subtly), please know that you are not a bad partner and this is quite normal. Yet, it is most likely not only pushing you and your partner apart, but also diluting any power your anger may have to make things better between you.

If so, itā€™s time to take a different approach. This doesn't mean eliminating anger, but rather evolving the way you handle it so it can serve you effectively, the way it was meant to.Ā

    Dive in to learn about:

    • How our unconscious defense mechanisms can lead to over-relying on anger in an attempt to improve things
    • Why, if you're feeling anger often, it's likely because you're in a very normal stage in your relationshipā€“one that you can move beyond, so you can have the love and connection you want.Ā
    • The 2 kinds of angerā€“one that hurts and one that heals.Ā
    • How the way I handled anger really hurt my first marriageā€”and how the way I handle it now has been a healing force in my own marriage.
    • How you, too, can begin shifting from the harmful to the helpful type of anger
    • What ā€strategic angerā€ can do for you and your relationship when you learn to use it.
    • What you can do instead of getting really angry at your significant other to make positive changes between you.

Tune in to this episode to start building a whole new relationship with your very human emotion of angerā€“one that will help you have the relationship you really want with your husband.
