What do the holidays mean to you? My son had a homework assignment for preschool which inspired some thoughts about the holiday season. Ever wonder why Christmas decorations include evergreens? Wonder about Kwanzaa and what it is exactly? (Still working on figuring that one out) Be sure to subscribe so you don't miss out on other random things you never knew you needed to know. 

We have all experienced the joy both of giving and of getting gifts. But many people don’t really appreciate the greatness of the many gifts that God gives us. Not only of health and strength, loving relationships and other benefits of life, but gifts of eternal value – forgiveness, peace with God, peace with ourselves, a relationship with God, a home in heaven, enjoyment of the Saviour, eternal security … to name a few. But do you know that all of these gifts are wrapped up in one really. Jesus Christ. If you have Him, you have everything, now and forever. We trust that you will enjoy listening about the gift that God has for you.

Christmas is the greatest gift-giving season of the year.  But we know that Christmas is about much more than the gifts that we give and received from one another. It is about the ultimate gift of God's Son, Jesus Christ. 

Have you unwrapped this gift and made it your own? Have you received the gift of eternal life? The ultimate gift didn't come wrapped in pretty paper but rather in swaddling clothes.

The two reflect on common themes like "The Reason for the Season"  and "The War on Christmas," memes that miss the history and tradition of celebrations around this Winter Solstice. The two remember their visits to Stonehenge. It would otherwise be a depressing time of year, if not for lights, candles, gift-giving and the story of the most celebrated birth in history - an archetype for the ages. Ken shares his Christmas playlist. They send their wishes to all, believers or not, peace and joy and wonder and love.

When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.”  Luke 2:15

In regards to the Christmas story, there are many characters to study and examine.  2000 years later, we still ask why angels appeared to lowly shepherds and why were they the first ones given an audience with the Messiah, the King of Kings.  There are implications for us even today as we study the shepherds -- both in their choice as heralds of the newborn king and their example as ones who simply gave glory to God.  Their story and inclusion is important; they heard it first.  We can follow their steps as well by hearing and responding and spreading the Gospel story.  

Here on this final episode of 2022, is my Dad and fan favorite, Pat Hail, Jr. and I are ending this year with a fun discussion about common holiday traditions. Christmas Trees, Holly and Ivy, the Yule log, Navitiy Sets, and Santa Claus himself. We chat about the beginning of each tradition, the cultural and spiritual significance, and how each tradition has transitioned through out the years. Parents, we are going to be talking about Santa’s FULL story towards the end of the episode, so this is your heads up if you need to be cautious.

Christmas is a time in which we can be distracted by many things.  The trimmings around us, the presents, the lights, even the busyness...it can all distract us from what this day means.  Beyond that, we can move away from the significance in Christ's advent by not connecting it to the cross and to the free gift of salvation.  Christmas does point us to the cross.  It helps us remember our God is a Promise Keeping God.  And it reminds us that He uses imperfect, flawed people like you and I to carry out His will.  This episode urges us to consider all of these truths and carry them with us throughout this season.  May we always understand why Christmas truly matters.
