Lockdowns and the coronavirus pandemic laid bare our inept and patchwork unemployment system. Iceland supported its citizens with 30 months of unemployment benefits while US workers barely received six months of benefits. Dan Doonan, the Executive Director of the National Institute on Retirement Security, and Elizabeth Wiley, a consulting actuary at Cheiron, wrote the book on hybrid plans – literally! 2020 will be a year that  lives in infamy! The global pandemic COVID-19 caused the entire nation to completely shut down and change the way in which our systems operate. In the criminal justice arena, court houses across the country closed down and defendants rights were placed on stand-by. Especially those being held in custody pretrial.

Author and Public Defender Ryan Cannon appears before the members of the jury and discusses the impact COVID-19 is having on the criminal justice system.  Ryan provides the audience with insight from his recently published scholarly article, "Sick Deal: Injustice and Plea Bargaining During COVID-19." Which calls into question the constitutionality of plea deals during this pandemic.  The article was published by the Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology Online which is a law journal at Northwestern University School of Law.
