Ep 46. Nisha Anand, CEO Dream.Org: Finding common ground with unlikely allies

Ep 46. Nisha Anand, CEO Dream.Org: Finding common ground with unlikely allies
“The humanity that connects us is stronger than what has been created to divide us”. Nisha Anand is the CEO of Dream.Org, a nonprofit organization that brings people together across racial, social and partisan lines to solve society’s toughest problems. A born change-maker, Nisha was arrested in 1998 while handing out pro-democracy leaflets in the military dictatorship of Myanmar and was sentenced to five years in jail. Her arrest put her on the international stage and changed her thinking on how to bring about lasting change and reform. This is her story and that of Dream.org, an organisation that was founded by CNN commentator and New York Times bestselling author, Van Jones, and that Nisha has led as CEO since 2019. With her team at Dream.org, Nisha works at the intersection of criminal justice reform, green economics and tech equity, to develop innovative solutions to social and racial justice issues. Recorded August 2023.

Has Worker Unrest Sparked a New Labor Movement?

Has Worker Unrest Sparked a New Labor Movement?

Low pay, no opportunity for advancement, and feeling disrespected topped the list of reasons why millions of workers quit their jobs in 2021. Arelia Valdivia and Francisco Diez from the Center for Popular Democracy are here to share some insight into the Great Resignation and what is driving worker unrest.

Iceland supported its citizens with 30 months of unemployment benefits while US workers barely received six months of benefits. Arelia Valdivia and Francisco Diez are here from the Center for Popular Democracy to explain why our current UI system desperately needs reform and how all workers, both employed and unemployed, can help fix it.

How Constitutional are COVID-19 Plea Deals?

How Constitutional are COVID-19 Plea Deals?

2020 will be a year that  lives in infamy! The global pandemic COVID-19 caused the entire nation to completely shut down and change the way in which our systems operate. In the criminal justice arena, court houses across the country closed down and defendants rights were placed on stand-by. Especially those being held in custody pretrial.

Author and Public Defender Ryan Cannon appears before the members of the jury and discusses the impact COVID-19 is having on the criminal justice system.  Ryan provides the audience with insight from his recently published scholarly article, "Sick Deal: Injustice and Plea Bargaining During COVID-19." Which calls into question the constitutionality of plea deals during this pandemic.  The article was published by the Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology Online which is a law journal at Northwestern University School of Law.

Here is the page from Northwestern's website:
