Episode 205: Surviving Religion 101: Michael Kruger

As fall approaches and students return to school, many will embark on their college journey for the first time. College life presents more than just an academic transition. It introduces new relationships, social experiences, and newfound freedom that can pose challenges to one's spiritual life. Unfortunately, colleges are not typically known for fostering a strong relationship with Christ or providing guidance for standing firm in the Christian faith.

Join Jonathan in a conversation with Dr. Michael Kruger as they explore the difficulties of maintaining a Christian faith in college. Together, they delve into general apologetics questions such as the origins and authenticity of the Bible. They also discuss the significance of staying connected to the body of Christ during college and empowering parents to equip their children for the academic culture of doubt and disbelief.

Dr. Kruger, the President, and Samuel C. Patterson Professor of New Testament and Early Christianity at Reformed Theological Seminary. His latest book, Surviving Religion 101: Letters to a Christian Student on Keeping the Faith in College, offers valuable insights.

In this episode, we aim to encourage you to anticipate the challenges that may arise during your college journey or for parents to prepare their children. Discover how to approach these challenges with grace, respect, and a strong defense of our hope in Christ.

93 - My Problem with Winsomeness

93 - My Problem with Winsomeness

In this episode, I share a talk I gave at a recent conference in April of 2023 at Christ the King Church of Cincinnati. Christ the King has launched King’s Domain as a ministry of their church to help bring biblical truth into the public square. The theme of the conference was “Clear Speech for a Confused Age.” For King’s Domain, this was a conference devoted to helping Christians speak plainly the teachings of the Bible for the glory of God and the good of the world.

The talk I delivered was on the topic of winsome third-wayism, a topic which I have discussed several times on this podcast. The talk was given in the style of polemics and I strike a tone which I am sure some might find disruptive, to say the least. My aim was to expose winsome third-wayism as a strategy of cultural engagement which is married to the secular spirit of our age and to equip Christian to think courageously about how to resist and combat this strategy in their churches and lives.

61 - Jen Oshman on Cultural Counterfeits, Abortion, the LGBTQ Movement, and Idolatry

61 - Jen Oshman on Cultural Counterfeits, Abortion, the LGBTQ Movement, and Idolatry

In this episode I talk with Jen Oshman about her book, Cultural Counterfeits. Jen is church planting wife, author, women’s ministry director, a speaker. She has been published at Desiring God, Crossway, The Gospel Coalition, Tim Challies, Risen Motherhood, Unlocking the Bible, Church Leaders, A Life Overseas, and she is a staff writer at Gospel-Centered Discipleship.

In her book, she explores cultural counterfeits to Christianity which many people are prone to believe today. Using the paradigm of idolatry, she examines topics such as abortion and the LGBTQ movement and their deception.

We also talk about the dustup from her article (based on a chapter from her book) on how Christian women idolize marriage and family. We consider various critiques of her article and approach on this topic.

Episode 156: Surviving College: Michael Kruger (Reprise)

Episode 156: Surviving College: Michael Kruger (Reprise)

Fall is right around the corner and students are back in school. Many are heading to College for the first time. These students will be faced with so much more than the next step in their education. They will navigate new relationships, new social experiences, and a new found freedom that can be a challenge to the spiritual lives of many students. College is not known for encouraging students to grow their relationship with Christ or teaching them how to stand firm in the faith.

Join Jonathan as he welcomes Dr. Michael Kruger to discuss the challenges of holding firm to the Christian faith in college. Together they unpack some general apologetics questions like, “How was the Bible written?” and “Why do we need the Bible? What makes it authentic?” They also talk about why it’s important to stay connected to the body of Christ in college, as well as how we can empower parents to prepare students to stand firm in an academic culture of doubt and disbelief.

Dr. Kruger serves as President and Samuel C. Patterson Professor of New Testament and Early Christianity at the Charlotte campus of Reformed Theological Seminary.

In addition to his duties as president, he is one of today’s leading scholars in the study of the origins of the New Testament, particularly the development of the New Testament canon. He is the author of eleven books, most recently Surviving Religion 101: Letters to a Christian Student on Keeping the Faith in College.

In this episode, we hope to encourage you to consider the challenges that may await you as a college student (or your child if you are the parent of a college student) and how you can be prepared with a gentle and respectful defense of the hope we have in Christ.

23 - Academic Captivity of the Church, Thomism, and Antinomianism with Dr. John M. Frame

23 - Academic Captivity of the Church, Thomism, and Antinomianism with Dr. John M. Frame

In this episode, we talk with Dr. John Frame, professor emeritus of Systematic Theology and Philosophy at Reformed Theological Seminary on the academic captivity of the church, Thomism, and antinomianism. How has the church found herself captive to higher education? What is Thomism and how is it shaping theological discourse today? How should we understand the law and grace with respect to antinomianism? Can the moniker “gospel-centered” become too myopic?

Michael Kruger on "Surviving Religion 101: Letters to a Christian Student on Keeping the Faith in College"

In this episode, we are joined by Dr. Michael Kruger who serves as the President and Samuel C. Patterson Professor of New Testament and Early Christianity at the Charlotte campus of Reformed Theological Seminary.  He shares from his latest book, "Surviving Religion 101: Letters to a Christian Student on Keeping the Faith in College", which addresses common objections to the Christian faith—the exclusivity of Christianity, Christian intolerance, homosexuality, hell, the problem of evil, science, miracles, and the reliability of the Bible.

As youth workers, we know the challenges that many of our students will face after high school, and so we hope that this conversation will equip you to help your students engage secular challenges with intellectual honesty, compassion, and confidence—and ultimately graduate college with their faith intact.
