Social Inflation Unveiled: The Hidden Force Driving Insurance Costs

Social Inflation Unveiled: The Hidden Force Driving Insurance Costs

This episode of "Insurance Hour" explores the concept of social inflation and its impact on insurance claims and premiums. It explains how cultural shifts in attitudes towards insurance claims contribute to higher payouts and, consequently, higher premiums. The episode suggests a societal need to reconsider our approach to insurance, emphasizing insurance as protection for significant losses rather than a refund mechanism. This change in perspective is proposed as a solution to mitigate the effects of social inflation.

Insurance Hour is hosted by renowned insurance expert Karl Susman. Karl is a frequent guest on television stations such as ABC, CBS and FOX, and now his popular radio program is syndicated across several key radio stations throughout California.

Fill out the application to work with me in my VIP mentoring program for coaches.

In my first year of helping coaches to build their coaching business, one of my clients asked for a full refund after I spent 6 months of private work with her. I was floored and had not seen this coming!

I found out later that she had asked for a full refund from her coaching training school as well and I knew that this was really about her needing money.

I had a phone conversation with her and told her that I couldn’t in good conscience refund her because I had already given her my time and her post program results were her responsibility — something I could not control.

But she threatened to complain to Visa, Better Business Bureau and PayPal, so I gave her a full refund to remove those threats.

I thought it was just as well that she wouldn’t be a coach. And, I felt compassion that her financial straits were such that she was searching for money.

I will never again give a full refund for time that I already spent one on one with a client unless my integrity is clear that I should.

KEY TAKEAWAYS FOR ONLINE COURSE CREATORS

Your refund and guarantee policy can definitely impact how many sales you make - especially for people who are on the fence.

Standard advice is that a 365-day refund period is the most likely to help you get more sales. However, there are some downsides.

As the course business owner, you get to decide!

When putting together your policy, answer these 5 questions:

    1. Does your course hosting or tools have a specific refund policy?
    2. Are you subject to any other legal requirements?
    3. Are you a "no questions asked" refund?
    4. Will you require some proof of work completed to refund?
    5. How will they receive their refund?

For the next few weeks, read guarantees and see which ones you like or don't like!

Also, don't take refund excuses personally - or too seriously - unless you get a bunch of them.

Remember, refunds are simply a cost of doing business - similar to paying for your tools or your website hosting.

Episode 26: Are we entering a golden age for NDC?

Episode 26: Are we entering a golden age for NDC?

With airline revenues decimated by the Covid-19 pandemic, it would seem that investment in rolling out IATA's New Distribution Capability (NDC) has come to a standstill.

A Sabre executive recently said that "the vast majority of airlines have paused or completely stopped their NDC activity".

Certainly, there has seemed to be little public activity around NDC. But is that really the case?  Has Covid derailed NDC or has it spurred airlines and intermediaries into working harder behind the scenes to make it a reality?

IATA recently held its Business Travel summit and NDC developments mentioned there show that things have moved apace. Many airlines have also announced new NDC-powered initiatives.

On the latest episode of the Week in Review podcast, regular host Mark Frary is joined by Claudia Adams of Allianz , Lydie Charpin of Amadeus, Aman Pourkarimi of Gray Dawes Group and  Paul Tilstone of Festive Road.

They discuss GDS strategies around NDC, the version 21.3 standard coming in September and whether corporates really are seeing the benefits.

Episode 17: The airline refund crisis and the rise of pay-as-you-fly

Episode 17: The airline refund crisis and the rise of pay-as-you-fly

One of the biggest issues in the travel sector since the start of the pandemic has been the thorny issue of refunds.

When global travel was effectively stopped, the industry had to work out what to do about the tickets that had already been paid for. Companies and individuals had paid out billions of euros, pounds and dollars on tickets that would no longer be used.

Where did that money sit? Could you get it back and within what timescale? Some airlines said they wouldn’t give money back but only issue vouchers. Some in the industry faced an existential crisis because of the refund demands.

The repercussions of the decisions made at that time are still playing out in the sector.

The German Business Travel Association (VDR) has been calling for airlines to only take payment at the moment of departure in order to resolve the issue. Lufthansa has now made changes to its Pay-as-you-F|ly scheme for corporates to allow this. Will other airlines follow suit?

The discussion features Christoph Carnier, president of the VDR, Guillaume Bizet of Areka Consulting and David Bishop of Gray Dawes Group along with regular host Mark Frary.

Travel Trust Accounts - protecting consumer money

The pandemic has highlighted major issues in the way in which travel companies handle consumer booking money, and how this is managed - where some companies have struggled to pay back customers when holidays have been cancelled because they have not protected these funds. We're joined by Jacqui Cleaver from Protected Trust Services as she explains the importance of ring-fencing consumer money and why more than ever we need transparent financial practices.

We look into Package Travel Regulation compliance, the future of ATOL, and the pickle travel companies will find themselves in if they don't put new financial procedures in place to prevent consumer money being used as cashflow.

Don’t Make This Rookie Mistake - It Will Kill Your Business

Don’t Make This Rookie Mistake - It Will Kill Your Business

When you’re just getting started, it’s easy to get caught up obsessing over money. Especially if you’re overwhelmed, struggling to get by and counting on every dollar to keep the lights on. But no matter how difficult it gets, it’s crucial you stay focused on the most important things and never let yourself fall over to the dark side.

Recently, I came across a post in a business group that I follow, which urged people to send customers who don’t pay you or who owed them money to collections. And I was completely horrified! That is awful advice and not the way you should run a service-based business.

It’s true, usually when you’re getting started the money is can get very tight. But you must never allow yourself to get sucked into thinking it’s more important than the way you run your company. It will kill your business, make no mistake about it.

So for this week’s episode, I’ll be sharing my story of how I’ve learned this lesson the hard way and why over-delivering played a crucial role in my success.

    Key Takeaways for This Week:

    • Should you send customers who owe you money to collections? (0:42)
    • My struggles with selling the first iteration of my software (1:23)
    • Not knowing how to handle refunds almost cost me my business (3:40)
    • The benefits of putting yourself in your customer’s shoes (5:38)
    • How to win people over with integrity (8:12)
    • How did learning to let go affect my business? (10:42)
