114 - Empowering Combat Veterans: How To Support Their Journey to Triumph Over Trauma with John Henry Parker

In this inspiring podcast episode, we get an intimate look at the remarkable journey of John Henry Parker. From a tumultuous childhood marked by hardships and adversity to his profound transformation into a beacon of resilience, empathy, and healing, John's story is one of courage, resilience, and reinvention.

John was raised by an alcoholic combat veteran father, an environment that subjected him to unimaginable trauma and abuse. However, amid the darkness, he found a beacon of hope in his Aunt Gladys, who played a pivotal role in shaping his life.

John talks about his internal struggles and his journey to reclaim his power. He shares the disconnect he felt trying to meet his father's expectations and the transformative experience of proving himself. His journey of self-discovery, spiritual exploration, and the profound realization that "God is love" has shaped his understanding of empathy and connection with others.

The episode concludes with John discussing his work with combat veterans. He emphasizes the importance of creating a new identity after service, the challenges veterans face when transitioning back to civilian life, and the power of resilience, empathy, and the ability to reinvent oneself after traumatic experiences.

John Henry Parker's story is a powerful reminder that we all can overcome adversity, heal from trauma, and transform our lives. It's a journey of resilience, empathy, and transformation and a testament to the power of resilience and compassion. We hope you'll join us in listening to this powerful conversation.

E42: Reinventing Yourself with Joanne Lipman

E42: Reinventing Yourself with Joanne Lipman

“It is all about being open to where your experiences might take you. I think we all have skills that are transferable. And so you need to open your mind.”

Are you seeking to make a career change, but aren’t sure how to proceed?

In this episode, I talk to Joanne Lipman, best-selling author, speaker, and media executive about the process of reinventing yourself.

A theme in my coaching and advising work with executive clients is a secret desire to find more meaning and fulfillment in their lives.  I often hear confessions of inner longings to reinvent their working lives and in some cases, to change careers and do something entirely different. Yet that longing is often accompanied by fear and ultimately, dismissal.

I frequently talk about this often unexpressed search for meaning and the desire to do something different. When I stumbled upon Joanne Lipman's new book Next!: The Power of Reinvention in Life and Work,  I knew I had to invite her to be a guest on the show.  In this episode full of practical advice, we discuss her research and strategies for those who are looking to make a career change and for what is “next”.

    In this episode:

    • The 4 steps to reinventing yourself - search, struggle, stop, and solution
    • Common obstacles that cause people to not reinvent themselves
    • The benefits of reaching out to your wider network
    • The secret to reinventing yourself
    • Common myths people believe about reinventing yourself
    • And more!

Mindset and Your Exit Strategy - Change Your Mind, Change Your Life

Mindset and Your Exit Strategy - Change Your Mind, Change Your Life

A Corporate Sr Vice President’s Exit Strategy

...Some of the highlights of the interview:

💥 Google her: legally, there are specifics that Cheryl Grace cannot talk about but they are all available in news coverage in all the big outlets - you’ll get the picture

💥 Becoming a Target for Economizing- the more money you start to earn, particularly as a woman, the higher up the ladder you climb after you've worked so hard to get there. Then you become a line item on a budget spreadsheet that people are looking at how else might we be able to use these dollars

💥 Your Exit Strategy - When you reach a certain point in your career, you want to make sure that when you go off into career 2.0 or simply life 2.0 that you're stepping across, not down.

💥 HR is not your friend - we’ll just leave that there

💥 Signs that it’s time to start planning - great tips

💥   “Fabulosity is a choice, and you get to choose it every single day with everything you do. It's all about your choices. And it's easier to make good choices when you're happy”

Final comment:  "the other thing that people need to also do when you're looking at an exit strategy is make sure you find good lawyers"

#204 Sari Botton and Carolita Johnson "Oldster Magazine"

#204 Sari Botton and Carolita Johnson "Oldster Magazine"

It's the return of Sari Botton and Carolita Johnson who were last guests on the same show back in April 2018!

Sari Botton is a writer, editor and teacher living in Kingston, NY. She is the editor of the award-winning anthology Goodbye to All That: Writers on Loving and Leaving NY and its New York Times-Bestselling follow-up, Never Can Say Goodbye: Writers on Their Unshakable Love for NY. Sari publishes three newsletters: her newest endeavor Oldster Magazine, as well as Adventures in "Journalism," and Memoir Monday. Her work has appeared in the New York TimesNew York Magazine, the Village VoiceHarper's BazaarMarie ClaireMore, and the Rumpus, plus other publications and anthologies. She is a contributing editor and leads essay writing and anthology editing at Catapult and is an adjunct in the MFA program at Bay Path University. Her memoir-in-essays, And You May Find Yourself... will be published by Heliotrope in June, 2022. Sari is the former Essays Editor for Longreads and hopes to one day reopen her co-working space for writers, Kingston Writers' Studio.

Carolita Johnson is a cartoonist and illustrator from NYC. She spent 13 years in Paris, France, after graduating from Parson's School of Design with a degree in Fashion Design. In Paris, she earned a masters degree in Modern Letters and Linguistics, and got some (admittedly very idiosyncratic) chops in pre-doctoral Medieval Anthropology, which turned out to be a gateway drug to cartoons and illustration. Her cartoons appear in the new yorker magazine, and in the books: the rejection collection 1, and the rejection collection 2, and sex and sensibility, and she's illustrated the books the new vampire's handbook, and women on food. Carolita is also a writer who has contributed to https://longreads.com/author/carolita/, has an essay in the 2021 reprint of Sari Botton's, goodbye to all that as well as a recent piece in Oldster Magazine on the inner workings of a woman's body.

We start out by checking in with what's new with these two since they were last on the show, and then get into a thought provoking conversation based in the essence of Oldster Mag, "perspectives on the joys and frustrations on getting older - at any stage of life." This means we talk about the aging woman's body, how it's largely ignored by the medical industry, ageism, how these two feel about being 56, what's good about it and what's not so good about it. Plus they make some reading recommendations that I've already started on myself!

Here's a link to the 10% Happier Podcast I mentioned about ending polarization and the "I, We, I" curve that we can all work to shift.

Here's a link to the Joan Didion essay, "Goodbye to All That."

S3 EP37 Embracing Change In Holiday Traditions, Featuring Stephany Erlbeck, Founder of Steph's Fit Culture

S3 EP37 Embracing Change In Holiday Traditions, Featuring Stephany Erlbeck, Founder of Steph's Fit Culture

Some stories can both break your heart and inspire.  This is that story.  Stephany Erlbeck unexpectedly lost her husband two days after his 50th birthday, leaving her and her four children, ages 8  through 19, reeling emotionally and financially.  Simply unprepared for an event like this, Stephany had to build her and her family's life back in every way.   This isn't a foreign dilemma. Many women simply aren't prepared for a sudden loss of a partner-- whether that be divorce or passing of a loved one.  Stephany, owner of multiple "Bodyrok" fitness gyms and founder of "Steph's Fit Culture," was able to follow her passions to get back control for herself and the future of her family.  The last layer for Stephany to address was loss during the holidays, something that most of us encounter and struggle with in our second acts.   Loss of loved ones.  Loss of tradition as kids age out and evolve.  It's flat out hard, and we need to address it.  This episode is about loss, gaining back control and evolving our approach to traditions in whatever second act we face.

E133: Liz Thompson: Let your passion define You

Liz Thompson was born on Long Island, NY and studied marketing in college, graduate school and worked as a product manager for several large CPG companies in New York.  She then switched gears, dropped it all, and attended  The French Culinary Institute in New York before moving to Los Angeles to pursue a new path. She owned and opened two restaurants, moved on to teach culinary, and then had to pursue a second career change.  Liz lost part of her sight overnight and had to access her skillset in terms of what angle of the food industry she was the most passionate about and could do mostly at home. Today she focuses on recipe development and new product development, helping individuals launch a food company and get their products to market. Reinvention at 70: Purpose, Persistence & Positivity with Barbara Healy

Reinvention at 70: Purpose, Persistence & Positivity with Barbara Healy

What does purposeful living look like to you as you age?

Are you living with intention? Are your mission and vision crystal clear? Can you boldly reinvent yourself as many times as you like?

Barbara Healy says yes to all these questions! This extraordinary, 70-year young Reinvention Rebel lives with intention and purpose, using courage as a catalyst to propel her forward.

She has created a thriving life she loves full of purpose and possibility. Along the way, she’s reinvented herself many times over,  across multiple decades.

She’s still doing that in her 70s and she has an empowering, positive story to tell that can’t help but motivate you to reflect on your own life and what’s possible.

A story that demonstrates we can reinvent ourselves at any age or any stage.

A reinvention story that’s inspiring, motivating, and helps us see that if Barbara can do it, any of us can do it too.

I love what Barbara shares about:

    • The power of having a personal mission to guide you
    • The 3 questions she asks herself every morning to live purposefully
    • How lifelong learning has fueled her many reinventions
    • How studying positive psychology helped her see new possibilities in her 60s
    • How we can create resilience as we age – it’s possible for any of us
    • What she does to shift into her “best life” mindset
    • And so much more!

As with most things, the path hasn’t always been clear. She has struggled just like the rest of us to figure out her path and purpose. She’s also someone who’s enthusiastically dived into self-inquiry to uncover the answers that have shaped her current path.

All that self-reflection has lead to deep joy and satisfaction. And the notion that her many reinventions have helped her uncover the power of purpose, persistence, and positivity as she ages.

I know you’ll love this episode, it’s deeply empowering to any of us at any age. Universal lessons and wisdom that I know will resonate with you.

Steve Dean is an NYC-based online dating consultant / community organizer / superconnector / digital nomad. Creating deep, authentic connections across communities is what he does. He says that's he lives for.  He host salons, dinners, meetups, webinars, and coworking sessions nearly every night of the week across multiple cities in order to bring people together from all over the world to share their stories and build new friendships, startups, and movements.

The Most Valuable Thing You Own is Your Data (w/ Viktor Mayer-Shönberger)

The Most Valuable Thing You Own is Your Data (w/ Viktor Mayer-Shönberger)

What are we talking about when we talk about "Big Data?" How do we balance privacy with unlocking the power of personal data? Should companies that have created massive value from data be forced to share with the market? What do we do when everyone's daily tasks are taken over by artificial intelligence?

Today, Chris talks with Viktor Mayer-Schönberger, one of the world's leading experts on Big Data and the impact is has on all of us. We define Big Data, discuss what it allows us to do and how it drives the creation (and concentration) of value, and how we might consider regulating it to encourage better, safer, and more thoughtful use.

Chris also relates how he learned about the importance of data, and makes you think again before you click the "Buy Now" button.

    Jussi Markula on Teal organizations

    Jussi Markula on Teal organizations

My guest for this episode is Jussi Markula, a teal mentor, a serial entrepreneur and the co-founder of the Teal Finland community. In his daily work at Prominda, Jussi facilitates the exploration of new paradigms in organizations.

Idea of a Teal organization was introduced by Fredrick Laloux in 2014 in his book, called Reinventing organisations. The book walks through the evolution of human organizational paradigms and then discusses the most advanced one to date, dubbed Teal.

Jussi helps us delve a little deeper in to the breakthroughs that enabled teal organizations to come to life.

Brief walkthrough of the evolutionary stages presented in Laloux book:

    • The first stage is called Red. That’s the stage of top-down authority and strict division of labor. Think of a street gang or a wolfpack, where fear is the glue of the organization.
    • Then we have Amber. Amber is characterized by hierarchy, formal roles and stable processes. It’s where we use the stick to keep people in control. An example of an amber organization is the army.
    • Then we get to Orange. Orange is the organization that acts like a machine. Orange organizations value innovation and accountability and are based on a meritocracy. This is probably the most common organizational paradigm currently in use.
    • After Orange comes Green. That’s the family-like organization. These green organizations are driven by their values and people are empowered to produce to the stakeholders. Green organizations have a strong focus on culture.
    • The final stage introduced by Laloux is teal. Teal is an organization that behaves like a living organism. The organization has it’s own evolutionary purpose. It’s self-managed and leadership is distributed. People bring their whole selves to work and don’t create a strong distinction between their work and private personas.
