Folge!

Guest: Patrick Soleymani of George Mason University on depressed freight markets; Cargo theft is on the rise; Workers required to return to offices

Our guest on this week's episode is Patrick Soleymani, associate professor within the management area in the School of Business at George Mason University. By any measure, 2023 has been a difficult year for the trucking industry. Just how bad are market conditions and when will trucking see a return to better times? Our guest offers some insights as to what has caused the freight recession and how long it may last.

Cargo theft is on the rise, both from warehouses and directly from trucks while freight is in transport. What is causing more of these crimes to occur, and what can be done to prevent them?

During the pandemic, many employees began working from home for the first time --  but now companies are requiring that most of them return to the office. New research this week reveals some recent trends affecting where people work and what is motivating companies to desire that their employees return to the office.

    230. Opportunity Costs: Job Flexibility is Now the New Pay Raise.

In this episode, host Bidemi Ologunde talked about a baby boomer who left a high-paying job instead of going back to the office, arguing that bosses are scared of remote work and just want to see employees working in person. He also talked about an employee who resigned from a well-paid job to avoid full-time office work, claiming that her bosses’ obsession with productivity forced her to leave; and lastly, he talked about the negative impact of companies ending work-from-home benefits: they lose highly skilled employees who consider flexible work as valuable as an 8% pay increase.

In October, the Imagine a Place team had the great fortune of podcasting LIVE from WorkSpaces, 2022 - a three-day event that brings together workplace innovators and thought leaders from all over the world.  This amazing event was packed with incredible people, speakers, and thinkers - all with BIG ideas about the future of work, which you'll get to hear over the course of three special episodes!

    • Why Return to Office is Vital for Democracy
    • DEI Strategies in a Flexible Work Environment

We kick things off as Doug sits down with two very special guests, author/speaker Sheela Subramanian (VP of Future Forum at Slack) and Kevin Griffin (lead singer of Better Than Ezra) - that's right, a rock star...but what does a best-selling author and  a rock star have in common at a workplace event? #125: Why Managers Want You In The Office (RTO)

#125: Why Managers Want You In The Office (RTO)

Why Managers Want You In The Office (RTO)
Today's show topic is inspired by a recent survey conducted by Fiverr that showed some shocking results...The real reasons why managers want you to return to the office. If you were working remotely during the pandemic, has your company enacted RTO, or Return To Office? If so, there may be underlying reasons. As managers, it's important to communicate openly and trust your coworkers to complete their given tasks. As employees, we deserve to feel empowered and respected by our management. In today's episode, we'll dig into this survey and find out why remote work is ending across the U.S. and the hidden meaning behind these survey answers.

    Chapters
    [02:28]
Now that the U.S. workforce has gotten comfortable working from home, why would we want to return to the office?

    [03:38]
A third of the managers surveyed by Fiverr think their employees will be more motivated to perform while they're being watched by their higher-ups.

    [04:31]
We, the employees, should feel empowered to perform our tasks no matter where we are working from. It shows we're trusted and respected.

    [05:06]
We all have customers, no matter our industry.

    [06:15]
25% of the managers surveyed said returning to the office would have employees taking shorter breaks.

    [07:54]
47% of managers surveyed said they planned to change their remote work policies in 2023.

    [08:47]
Some companies won't allow you to work from home on Mondays or Fridays, thinking you'll opt for an extended weekend, rather than actually completing your tasks.

    [10:24]
On a more positive note, 42% of managers surveyed said employees are returning to the office, as they should have more access to valuable company resources.

    [11:25]
84% of employees surveyed said they would be willing to come back to work more frequently if there was a promise of better working conditions and better connections with coworkers.

    [13:48]
Over 60% of employees surveyed said they would come back to the office if they got a salary increase.

    [16:02]
Why do we feel entitled to raise for coming back to business as usual? Let's explore the answers and understand how to present them during a discussion about raises at work.

Jen Dennard and Dan Pupius on Intentional Hybrid Policies

In this episode of Lead Time Chats, Jean Hsu, VP of Engineering at Range, chats with Range co-founders Jen Dennard and Dan Pupius about how companies can roll-out intentional and effective hybrid work policies.

    Jean, Jen, and Dan discuss:

    • Some of the more effective hybrid return-to-office rollouts we’ve heard about, and others that…could be better.
    • Why in-office work may not actually create more serendipitous interactions for most employees.
    • What companies should pay attention to when implementing or iterating on a hybrid office policy.
    • Companies that are technically “remote-friendly” but have a reputation of not being great for remote employee career development.
