Bad Mexicans and the 1910 Revolution

Bad Mexicans and the 1910 Revolution
Awarded the 2023 Bancroft Prize for her book "Bad Mexicans: Race, Empire, and Revolution in the Borderlands," UCLA history professor Kelly Lytle Hernández tells the dramatic story of the magonistas, the migrant rebels who sparked the 1910 Mexican Revolution from the United States. Taking readers to the frontlines of the uprising and the U.S./Mexico counter-insurgency campaign that failed to stop it, Lytle Hernandez puts the magonista revolt at the heart of U.S. history. Long ignored by textbooks, the magonistas threatened to undo the rise of Anglo-American power, on both sides of the border, and inspired a revolution that gave birth to the Mexican-American population, making the magonista story integral to modern American life. Lytle Hernández is a professor of History, African American Studies, and Urban Planning at UCLA where she holds The Thomas E. Lifka Endowed Chair in History and directs the Ralph J. Bunche Center for African American Studies. One of the nation’s leading experts on race, immigration, and mass incarceration, she is the author of "Migra! A History of the U.S. Border Patrol," and "City of Inmates: Conquest, Rebellion, and the Rise of Human Caging in Los Angeles." She also leads Million Dollar Hoods, which maps fiscal and human cost of mass incarceration in Los Angeles. For her historical and contemporary work, Lytle Hernández was named a 2019 MacArthur “Genius” Fellow. Series: "Burke Lectureship on Religion and Society" [Humanities] [Show ID: 38937]

    New Year's Revolutions (Episode 18)

    New Year's Revolutions (Episode 18)

For this episode on New Year’s Revolutions Nat and Bec begin by discussing their foray into TikTok. Is it humiliating or are they taking healthy risks? :)

Bec brings up the idea of improving someone else’s life in this new year if you don’t feel equipped to improve your own right now.

Natalie troubles this notion as she considers the dangers of help that is misguided. But at the same we don’t want to devolve into myopic self-help. It’s a delicate tightrope.

They discuss Bec’s husband’s statement that “he makes no promises” about a couple things and how that’s actually a good thing. Words have power we don’t want to toss them out. Nat adds on by referencing German philosopher Paul Tillich who says “take no oaths.”

Nat ends by saying incremental shifts, that might only be perceptible to her, are what she’s going for in her New Year’s Revolution: an incrementally shifted sound project of listening to her body.

Bec is seeking to be evermore in the present moment! She wonders if she’s doing that with her newsletter already.

    The Plow

    The Plow

Ever pick the wrong tool for the job?? Yes, I certainly have or just did not have the right one with me. This often does not end well and sometimes, if not often ends in injury. People operating in the wrong place can also have similar results. Talking today about those who are meant to be pioneers and those who are meant to be part of an existing operation. Knowing who you are and what you are designed to do is so important.

    Bright Lights keep shining.

    Hope is contagious.

As always you are so appreciated by me. Keep being awesome!

The Manufacturing Digital Revolution: Insights from the Automotive Industry

The Manufacturing Digital Revolution: Insights from the Automotive Industry

In this session we look at the Digital Revolution in Manufacturing through the lens of the Automotive Industry. For more information, also check out Oracle's webpage: https://www.oracle.com/industries/aut...

To help me explore the topic, I am joined by Aniello Pepe, who is Global Director, Automotive in the Oracle Industry Strategy Group. Automotive is today an exciting paradigm of a broader transformation, or rather, revolution, of the entire manufacturing industry. In fact, the automotive industry is changing everything: the product is changing (e.g., electrification) and becoming more digital (e.g., connected cars, autonomous vehicles, the supplier network is changing (e.g., batteries, electronics), the production environment is changing (e.g. Industry 4.0 is key in the industry), and customers themselves are changing (e.g. propensity to own a vehicle vs. buying subscriptions for using it).

    No More Condemnation

    No More Condemnation

In this episode Jeremy Laney teaches how you are free from the condemnation of the law. Do you feel like you just can't be good enough for God? Do you always seem to fall short everyday? We condemn ourselves and think God is mad and displeased with us. Some of us are even scared of God. That isn't what a love relationship with is God is suppose to be like.
You can't  go to God's throne of Grace with boldness and confidence if you're scared of God or you believe He's mad at you.
In Romans 7:15-25 Paul gives a great example of how he tries to good, but doesn't find how to perform it. His spirit desires to do the law of God, but  the sin in his flesh brings him into captivity.  O wretched man! Who will deliver him from the body of death?
Jeremy Laney reveals how God sent His Son Jesus to take sin in His own body and be condemned by God for us! Jesus took the punishment of sin for us! Now we can receive His free gift of Righteousness by faith and have peace with God.
There is now no more condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus! Praise God!

    Righteousness By Faith

    Righteousness By Faith

Have you ever wondered if God requires you to perform good deeds to stay righteous and saved or was the crucifixion enough? Jeremy Laney takes you on a  journey through the gospel of Christ in the Book of Romans chapters 1:16-17 and 3:21 -28 and answers these questions and more.

Provoking Israel To Jealousy By Saving The Gentiles

Provoking Israel To Jealousy By Saving The Gentiles

On this  journey into the gospel of Christ, Jeremy Laney teaches how God is provoking Israel through the salvation of the Gentiles. Hardening in part has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles come in. The Gentiles has attained righteousness by faith. Israel has not attained to righteousness, because they are seeking it by the works of the law and not by faith. Jesus Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.

97: Misha Teasdale - Moving the needle

Misha Teasdale needs little introduction. As the self proclaimed Tree-E-O of Greenpop South Africa, a tree planting land restoration organization, he aims to not only facilitate the healing of our planet but ourselves as well. Misha has a B-Tech in Sustainable Industrial Design, and before he started Greenpop, he went on a journey from Cape Town to London, profiling NGO’s and CBO’s across the continent to attract CSI funding and encourage knowledge sharing and grassroots volunteering. This experience changed his life, altering his thinking and planted the seeds that have become the Greenpop we see today.

September is Arbour month, its not something many of us know or celebrate anymore, and so this conversation comes at the right time. Misha for me represents the innovative, powerful energy of the social entrepreneurs and eco warriors pushing every day for the improvement of life on our planet. It was a privilege to share some thoughts with him and I have no doubt you will walk away richer from this conversation. Enjoy.

#22 - Elections Should be Constructive, not Destructive!

#22 - Elections Should be Constructive, not Destructive!

As I stepped back from the past week's news flow, I questioned why this Nation is suffering through such civil discord? As I pondered this question, I began to wonder... How REAL are our perceived differences in national policy? Are we really so different from each other that no longer can we speak to each other? Is there no middle ground between us?  Do we break, or can we bend a little, so that stronger together we can flourish once again?

How far apart are these two sides on Education, Environmental Issues, Climate Change, Jobs and Wages, Corporations as a Person, Military and Interventionist policies, Civil Rights vs. 1964 Rulings, corrupt Policing, and Judiciary, and so many more?  We need elections to focus on more of what we can accomplish together rather than destroy the other side.

Elections should be constructive, not destructive.

It's best we prepare for what revolution does to a nation's society, infrastructure, economy, and how it impacts one's personal safety. The time to prepare is now!
