The "godfather" of microplastics on how to stop them

Marine biologist Professor Richard Thompson was the first to identify microplastics on an Isle of Man beach 30 years ago. This week, he’s been at the UN Environment Programme headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, where delegates from around the world are working towards an international treaty on plastic pollution. But are policymakers listening to the scientists?

S4E8 -- UM Australia 2023 Preview & Profile of Simon Cochrane

S4E8 -- UM Australia 2023 Preview & Profile of Simon Cochrane

UM Australia is the focus of this episode.  I have a chat with race director, Jeff Morris, to preview a few of the 45 athletes who are toeing the line in Noosa this weekend.  Like most 515 races, the line up includes some big names with lofty goals like Richard Thompson and his sub 20 challenge, and some people who are just challenging themselves to complete the distance.   We discuss the variety of situations that bring people to take on a 515 event..

My athlete in profile is New Zealand’s Simon Cochrane.  Simon is a pro triathlete with 37 Ironmans on his resume but is taking on the 515 distance for the first time.  He is the owner of Athletic Peak, a coaching and conditioning business which focuses on supporting athletes along their endurance journey.  Building to the lead up of UM Australia, Simon has recently topped the podium in a couple of ultra runs including winning “the claw”, a feat not previously attained at the Blue Lake 24 hour Challenge.

015 - Should They Stay Or Should They Go?

015 - Should They Stay Or Should They Go?

In this episode we address a thorny issue: if you're an ageing rock and roller, is it time to quit? If your powers are waning, to be fair to the fans, should you stay or should you go? We can think of one or two who might be happier in retirement, and discuss the late careers of Jon Bon Jovi, BB King and Bob Dylan.

In Culture Catch Up this time around: The Captain reports on the mind-bending cinematic experience that is Everything Everywhere All At Once, and a remastered soundtrack album from Richard Thompson.

El Tele has finished Eckhart Tolle's book The Power of Now, the Killing Eve series, and reports on new music recommendations from the OAP family, and the new Doctor Who. We lost Dennis Waterman a short while ago, and we talk about his starring roles in classic British TV.

El Tele rounds it all off with two jokes for the price of one!

    PART THREE:
Our in-depth conversation with Richard Thompson.

    ABOUT RICHARD THOMPSON:
Our guest on this episode of Songcraft is three-time Grammy nominee and Ivor Novello award winner Richard Thompson. Named as one of the top 20 guitarists of all time by Rolling Stone magazine, Thompson began his career as one of the architects of the British Folk Rock movement with his band Fairport Convention in the late 1960s. The 1970s and early ‘80s brought a series of critically-acclaimed duo albums by Richard and his then-wife Linda Thompson. Two of those releases—I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight and Shoot Out the Lights—were named among Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Returning to a solo career after the musical and marital partnership concluded, Thompson has released more than 20 solo studio albums and film soundtracks, and has earned lifetime achievement honors from the Americana Music Association and the BBC Awards. He was bestowed with an Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace, and his song “1952 Vincent Black Lightning” was named by Time magazine on its list of the 100 Greatest Songs Since 1923.” As influential a songwriter as he is a guitarist, Richard’s music has been covered by Elvis Costello, Robert Plant, Don Henley, REM, Sleater-Kenny, David Byrne, Linda Ronstadt, The Five Blind Boys of Alabama, Emmylou Harris, Bonnie Raitt, Los Lobos, The Del McCoury Band, David Gilmour, Alison Krauss, Patty Loveless, Shawn Colvin & Loudon Wainwright III, among others. Algonquin Books recently released the paperback version of Richard’s memoir Beeswing: Losing My Way and Finding My Voice, 1967-1975

Community - what does that mean? Richard Thompson explains.

Community - what does that mean? Richard Thompson explains.

#014 - Remarkable community indeed. In this episode of the Berkhamsted Spotlight we’re talking about the community. Richard Thompson, Assistant Vice Principal, is in charge of the school’s external relations which means he has a passion for connecting with the community and keeping those relations strong.

So in this episode we’re going to hear why community is so important for the school, what the Society is and how it works, how the local community can get involved in the school, and why it’s important.

But we also hear which of the school’s alumni Richard would bring back (dead or alive) to give a talk at the school. See if you can guess who he chose.

So come with me now as we talk Community with Richard Thompson.

Episode 5: A Conversation with The Rails

Episode 5: A Conversation with The Rails
If you’ve ever wondered how much passion, dedication, patience, and determination goes into writing a great song, I give you the Rails. Consisting of James Walbourne and Kami Thompson, the Rails are an English rock duo with three albums to their name since 2014—each one written and recorded under vastly different circumstances. In this episode of For Songs, Kami and James dissect four of their tunes with disarming candor—Grace of God and Borstal from their 2014 debut Fair Warning, and Dictator and Ball and Chain from 2019’s Cancel the Sun. Listen in as they discuss how much they’ve learned from working with such legends as Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders, Shane MacGowan, Jay Farrar, and many others. Kami and James talk about how their writing style has evolved and and how they’ve come to find a strong place after making a critical lifestyle change. And stay until the end when we get into social media and receive a visit from one of their cats. So all the way from Camden Town in London, here are the Rails…

    021 - Featuring Phil Cook

    021 - Featuring Phil Cook

Hey there, Dead Freaks! This go-round I fill you in on how things went down when Osiris went to Delfest and have a great conversation with Phil Cook. Then, of course, we get into some Grateful Dead.

Phil shares details on his new album, People Are My Drug, and his band, The Guitarheels. We also talk about his work with Hiss Golden Messenger and covering the Grateful Dead. We’ve included a great new track, “Steam Powered Blues”, from the new record. You can order the record (in whatever format suits you) from Phil's website: PhilCookMusic.com

As for the Grateful Dead music in this episode, the show was released as Dave's Pick's 20 but, we're listening to a fine Jim Wise audience recording. As always, details are in the shownotes: https://brokedownpodcast.blogspot.com/2018/06/021-featuring-phil-cook.html
