After Dark: Yotpo Pricing Update, Trendcore, Reading List 2024

Our Predictions episode was packed with many great insights and discussion points, but the guys had even more to discuss regarding what 2024 has in store. PLUS: Rite Aid gets a hefty penalty from the FTC, healthcare trends, “Trendcore” and “trendwashing”, and what Phillip and Brian are reading right now.

    Product is Content

    • {00:08:41} - “The terminally online people are the ones who are constantly trying to gain recognition by glomming onto other people's visible success, and Yotpo just didn't have that kind of brand affinity in social media.” - Phillip
    • {00:28:41} - “2024 is just gonna be another really rough year in health care because we've been saying forever that a lot of the technology does exist to bring some of these technologies to homes. It could be, but the problem is adoption by the ecosystem and by consumers. And that's not gonna hit in 2024. Sorry.” - Brian
    • {00:35:50} - “The Rite Aid issue {is} a great example of this where people are actually genuinely relying on technology that ultimately is able to fail in ways that no one understands. As technology becomes more and more of a black box, it's going to be harder and harder to identify what the cause of something actually is.” - Brian
    • {00:39:23} - “If you look at the Hailey Bieber dress can trend because Hailey Bieber in a red dress becomes a meme, and Shein produces it within a week, and then people are buying it within another week, and then it turns on social media as a result within a couple weeks. So the meme half-life of about a month is able to reach mass cultural and commerce adoption, and then necessarily dies to whatever is next.” - Phillip
    • {00:42:39} - “People who have made phenomenal monetary investments in the last cycle get left out of the next two cycles, and that's how you get old.” - Phillip

#19 AI predictions for 2024, The Rite Aid scandal, Apple to support LLMs, EU supports AI startups, LAION in hot water

In this riveting episode of AI Nexus, co-hosts Elias and Newton dive deep into the latest trends and breaking news in the world of Artificial Intelligence. They unravel intriguing predictions surrounding AI in 2024, drawing insights from influential figures like Bill Gates.

The episode kicks off with a spotlight on Apple's ambitious plans to enhance its mobile devices, making them capable of supporting Large Language Models (LLMs) and other resource-intensive AI computations. Elias and Newton explore the potential implications of this technological leap, particularly for the vast community of Apple users worldwide.

The conversation then shifts to the European Union's groundbreaking initiative to expand access to its high-performance computing supercomputers for AI model training by startups. However, there's a catch—startups must align with the EU's robust AI governance program to gain entry. The co-hosts dissect the challenges and opportunities this presents for budding AI innovators in Europe.

In a thought-provoking segment, Elias and Newton tackle the controversial decision to remove the LAION-5B machine learning dataset, used by major AI products, due to alarming findings from a Stanford study. The dataset's association with suspected instances of child sexual abuse material raises ethical concerns and prompts a broader discussion on responsible AI development and usage.

The episode concludes with a gripping exploration of the Rite Aid scandal, where the U.S. drugstore giant faces a five-year ban on utilizing facial recognition software. The Federal Trade Commission's ruling sheds light on Rite Aid's 'reckless use' of AI-powered surveillance systems, which not only compromised customer privacy but also exposed sensitive information. Elias and Newton dissect the implications of this case and reflect on the growing importance of ethical AI practices in corporate landscapes.

Come Sing With Me (in a Rite Aid)

Come Sing With Me (in a Rite Aid)

Yam shares a story about catching a song in the bathroom of a Rite Aid. Jessi & Yam wax poetic about forbidden love, undercover artists, odd jobs, and the virtues of spontaneity in the everyday world. Yam teaches Jessi a song inspired by one of their listeners (a poet named M) called Come Sing With Me, and the two of them sing it with the help of their housemates.

If you'd like to hear bonus recordings of M reciting more of his poetry, consider becoming a member of our growing patreon community (where we share extra goodies and bonus content from the making of each episode). The lyrics for today's song teaching :

    Come Sing With Me

    (Pt. 1)
    Come, come, sing with me
    We'll lift our souls
    We'll lift our voices
    Come, come sing with me
    We'll lift our spirits up
    Together now

    (Pt. 2)
Fill the air with joyful noises
Until the whole wide world rejoices
Fill the air with joyful noises
    Unto the whole wide world

    (Pt. 3)
    Sing, sing
    Sing, sing
Tell me will you sing, sing
    Will you sing with me?

    Government GoodRx!??

    Government GoodRx!??

    The Dumb Idea Podcast

    Government GoodRx??!

GoodRx is an amazing tool for lowering prescription drug costs. Hundreds of dollars can be saved on each refill. So why is it when the government tried to tackle healthcare via the Affordable Care Act 10+ years ago, they weren't able to reduce prescription drug costs as effectively as GoodRx has done? And at ZERO additional cost to the consumer??? Was this the perfect solution we need? And with it being as good as it is and proven to save people money, why isn't the government advertising this for our seniors who struggle with high prescription costs through Medicare and Medicaid? We're truly baffled in this episode.
