Ep017: Stand By Me + "bad" kids
We’ve all heard the term “bad kid” before. In this ep, Dr Billy tells us why why he loves to work with these kids and recounts some lessons he’s learnt along the way. We use the emotional campfire scene from Stand By Me where River Phoenix shines (the scene is on our Instagram channel - @popcultureparenting). Nick also catches Billy off guard by nailing some psychology theory!

Season 5: Dystopia Myopia - The Mosquito Coast (Episode 26)

In the twenty-sixth episode of Season 5 (Dystopia Myopia) Kyle is joined by actor Dan Bauer and multi-instrumentalist Ben Childs to discuss the failure and hubris of fashioning one's own utopian ideal based off faulty premises in Peter Weir's fascinating character study of the populism at the center of American rage and exceptionalism in The Mosquito Coast.

...about Even Cowgirls Get The Blues (1993)

...about Even Cowgirls Get The Blues (1993)

Gus Van Sant’s adaptation of Tom Robbins’ “Even Cowgirls Get The Blues” is generally regarded as a failure, an opinion Andras (who has read most of Robbin’s books) shares. Bryan (who has not read the book) loves this film, which leads to a conversation about the responsibility (or lack thereof) directors have to their source material.

Written & Directed by Gus Van Sant. Based upon “Even Cowgirls Get The Blues” by Tom Robbins. Starring Uma Thurman, Rain Phoenix, John Hurt, Pat Morita, Victoria Williams, Lorraine Bracco, Sean Young, Carol Kane, Buck Henry, Keanu Reeves, Crispin Glover, Ken Kesey, William S. Burroughs, Ed Begley Jr., Angie Dickinson & Roseanne Arnold

How is the world wrong about Wrongness

From Bryan Connolly: So much hate is dumped on this movie. Undeserved! It’s weird. It’s funny. Maybe it’s not like the book. Good. Read the book. Enjoy that for what it is. Now lets enjoy this movie that has Pat Morita as a sexy guru!

    Stand By Me (1986)

"I never had any friends later on like the ones I had when I was twelve. Jesus, does anyone?"

It's episode 40 and the boys take a look at a very special film... Stand By Me.  One is very familiar with it and one had only seen once till now.  This film is beloved by many so what is your opinion on it?  See what the boys have to say and as always every 10 episodes seem to end up with a bottle of Prosecco... surely that will end well.

Why not grab yourself a glass and relax with a review of this 1986 classic.

Some people take your heart, others take your shoes, and still others take you home.

This week I talk about a movie that made a big impact on me when it came out in the early 1990s, 'My Own Private Idaho', starring one of my favourite ever actors, River Phoenix (sadly no longer with us) and Keanu Reeves (the subject of my last post!) Whilst not perhaps a masterpiece the film has many merits and is certainly worthy of discussion.
