    Be An Ally: Nimona (2023)

Screen Cares hosts, Sarah & Jennie, received a listener question for this week's episode: "My children care about inclusivity and equity but express that they aren't sure if their individual efforts matter, and express that it's hard to always keep up the 'good fight' against hatred. Is there a film that I could show my children that could demonstrate how important it is to be an active ally?"

This was a challenging question but we've got the perfect film! And while the PG-rated film, Nimona (2023), based on ND Stevenson's graphic novel, is a fantastic screening choice for kids, it also is wildly entertaining and inspiring enough for humans of all ages. Nimona demonstrates the immense value of acknowledging and celebrating human differences and the value of being brave enough to be a true friend and ally.

    1. Think about an issue of identity that feels uncomfortable for you. Discomfort often comes from fear, rather than blind hatred. So, ask yourself this: What are you afraid of? Why are you uncomfortable with elements of someone else’s identity that don't impact you?
    2. How do your relationships with individuals impact your ability to have compassion? Think about a time when you or someone you love has suffered. How can you generalize your feelings of compassion towards your loved one to someone not known to you, who is also suffering?
    3. There have been several recent examples of public backlash for inclusion of depictions of same-sex relationships or affection. There are also lots of examples of suggestive heterosexual content in media marketed to children that receive much less backlash. What are some ways in which we can address this?
    4. Why do we avoid making other people uncomfortable by remaining silent to offensive comments or behavior?

Sound of Metal & Regular Show

Sidey is famed for his sartorial elegance so it should come as no surprise that he picked the Top 5 Suits for us to discuss. By the end of this week’s show, you'll know your two-piece from your three-piece, your tuxedo from your dinner jacket and your shell suit from your tracksuit.

SOUND OF METAL is director Darius Marder's 2019 story about Ruben, a drummer in the experimental heavy metal band Blackgammon and the impact of his devastating and sudden hearing loss on his ongoing issues with sobriety. Riz Ahmed was Oscar nominated for his portrayal and it’s a transformational and powerful performance but it's supporting actor Paul Raci, himself the son of Deaf parents, who steals the movie as Vietnam veteran and recovering alcoholic Joe, the charismatic leader of the community. A rallying call not to treat individuals with disabilities as broken, waiting to be fixed, we all enjoyed this moving journey alongside the fascinating insights into the Deaf community and culture it also provides.

As a father to two girls I've been subjected to more than my fair share of unicorns over the years and feel strongly that this week’s kids feature, the animated series REGULAR SHOW, has it right: The Unicorns Have Got To Go, which is coincidentally the title of the episode we watched. Mordecai and Rigby find their friendship tested when Mordecai is more interested in buying new cologne 'Dudetime' in order to attract waitress Margaret than spending time with Rigby playing the latest exciting video game, Strong Johns. But when Mordecai sprays himself with the aftershave the only thing attracted to him is a group of douchebag unicorn bros, out for a good time and definitely not trying to trick you into drinking a cup of their suspiciously spermy looking cocktails. Soon things get out of hand; Rigby's trampoline gets broken and park manager Benson, a sentient gumball machine, appears to be sexually assaulted. Will the boys rid themselves of the hangers on and patch up their failing friendship inside 12 minutes?

Sound of Metal - Turbulence 3: Heavy Metal

Sound of Metal - Turbulence 3: Heavy Metal

First, an incredibly gripping film about the frailty of the human condition.  Followed by a movie with "heavy metal" in the title and about ten seconds of heavy metal in the film.  Gotta say this is a super weird combo of films, but I personally don't think we could have done it any better.  Tag along as Birdman and I as we traverse the experience of how to grow as a person, and also weather or not the weirdest guy ever has his dick pierced.  Join us for a very djent episode of It's Just 2 Movies!

    S02E01 - Nightcrawler (2014)

Welcome to Season 2 of Snubs & Dubs! This season we are covering the 87th Academy Awards, featuring the films of 2014.

On the first episode of Season 2, we're talking about Dan Gilroy's Nightcrawler. Los Angeles denizen Louis Bloom (Jake Gyllenhaal) survives by scavenging and petty theft. He stumbles into a new career as a cameraman and -- armed with a camcorder and police scanner -- begins nocturnal forays across the city in search of shocking and grisly crimes. When he catches the eye of a shopworn news director (Rene Russo) who welcomes the chance to raise her station's ratings, Louis goes to increasingly greater lengths to catch the "money shot."

Please leave a five-star review and follow us on the social platforms below! We'd love to hear your feedback on the episodes, or thoughts on the movies themselves!

Double Trouble With The Venom Duology

Double Trouble With The Venom Duology

With all the MCU movies coming out this year, 2 down and 2 to go, as well as a plethora of MCU Disney Plus shows, some might forget about the Sony made Venom franchise, including the fairly new release, Venom: Let There Be Carnage.  Tom Hardy is back in another super hero franchise after his stint going toe-to-toe with Batman.  And joining in the fray is Riz Ahmed, Woody Harrelson, Michelle Williams, and soon to be seen in the final Daniel Craig Bond swan song, Naomie Harris.  So try to get the dancing Tobey Maguire out of your minds for a second and see this balance of darker storyline and strange humor for a romp of a time that may or may not exist in the MCU soon enough.  Let me know what you think of the duology on social at Nick Nack Movies or Nick Nack_IC on Twitter, Tik Tok, Instagram, and Letterboxd, where you can see how I rate these two movies.  Either super slam dunks or another venomous adaptation that causes carnage to the source material, let's find out together!

    Mogul Mowgli with Riz Ahmed

    Mogul Mowgli with Riz Ahmed

Today we’re joined by the multi-talented Riz Ahmed. Riz is not only an award-winning actor known for roles in films like Four Lions, Nightcrawler, Sound of Metal and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story – he’s also a gifted musician, and a prominent voice for change in the film industry, frequently advocating for a more diverse range of stories and storytellers. Last year, he added screenwriter to his lengthy list of talents with the mesmerising Mogul Mowgli – a dark drama about a British-Pakistani rapper who suffers the sudden onset of a debilitating autoimmune disease. Zed – played by Ahmed – is a talented MC hungry for fame but growing disconnected from his roots, when illness sends him spiralling into a string of dangerous hallucinations, stalked every step of the way by a mysterious masked figure with links to Pakistan’s past.

Co-written by director Bassam Tariq, the film won huge critical acclaim for its intimacy, imagination and ambition, innovatively weaving in songs from an accompanying concept album that Riz released roughly in tandem with Mogul Mowgli. In this episode, he tells us about his relationship with writing and the parts of his own life he brought to the screen in this deeply personal movie. We also talk about the film’s prescient echoes of the Covid-19 pandemic and why “our scars can be a road map to our creativity” as Riz so beautifully puts it. Do make sure you’ve seen Mogul Mowgli before listening in, as this is a spoiler-filled conversation exploring all of the movie’s major plot points. Once you have, come back and brace yourself for a fascinating insight into what for my money is one of the best movies of the past 12 months.
