    Episode 131: Matthew Chapter 9

    Episode 131: Matthew Chapter 9
What strikes me the most in this chapter is Jesus’ heart for those on the outside of the religious elite. He seeks out the down and out and those far from religious purity and he eats with them, has compassion on them, heals them and urges his followers to pray for them and for workers to reach them with news of his kingdom. He is not following the normal procedures of the religious elite, he is announcing that everyone is welcome in his kingdom. The question that comes to mind is if I am learning from Jesus, am I as concerned about those on the outside as Jesus is?

Episode 154: Our favorite movies of 2021/'Belle' (2022)

Episode 154: Our favorite movies of 2021/'Belle' (2022)

Regina returns to the show to talk about her favorite movies from 2021. Since she has seen almost all of the movie we have covered, she was able to slide right on it. Little did we know she would pick a movie that was on someone's least favorite list last week. We also talk about the anime Belle. The film was a huge hit on the festival circuit and in its native Japan. But the real question is, did WE like it?

We start the show with a talk about A24 and how some people are willing to give them a pass. This leads to a conversation about The Witch before a talk about the newest trailer from A24. From director Ti West, X is about an adult film crew who get in for more than they bargained for. We talk about West's previous works, the look of the film and whether the trailer reveals too much.

Inspired by Beauty and the Beast, Belle is the story of an shy high schooler named Suzu. When she enters the virtual world U, she becomes a talented idol known as Belle. We compare the anime to the source material, ruminate about love, and question the film's dark twist.

We are finally ready to put 2021 to close with a talk about some of our favorite movies from last year. Some of the picks are expected, some of them you can guess, but one of them was mentioned on last week's show about least favorite movies of 2021. We also discuss grown up teen sex comedies and talk about how twist endings are overrated.

News & Reviews: LFF Roundup - Titane, Spencer, Last Night in Soho, Flee, The Harder They Fall & The Feast

News & Reviews: LFF Roundup - Titane, Spencer, Last Night in Soho, Flee, The Harder They Fall & The Feast

This week Alex is joined by semi regular guest Paul to bring reviews of some of the special programming from the recently wrapped up 65th BFI London Film Festival. Between satellite screenings around the country and at home screenings on BFI Player, this year had a packed schedule with plenty for everyone. We take time to review six of this year's offerings ahead of their upcoming releases.

Julia Ducournau's French thriller 'Titane' is the Palme d'Or winning follow up to 'Raw' and has been the subject of much discussion and hype since it's premiere there. Kristen Stewart stars as an imagined version of Princess Diana during a pivotal Christmas with the in-laws in 'Spencer', Edgar Wright's much anticipated time warping thriller 'Last Night in Soho' stars Thomasin McKenzie and Anya Taylor-Joy, 'Flee' is a much talked about animated documentary detailing the journey of a young gay refugee from Afghanistan, Jeymes Samuel opened the festival with his stylish western 'The Harder They Fall' which stars Jonathan Majors and Idris Elba, finally Lee Haven Jones' strange Welsh language horror 'The Feast' features a dinner party unlike any other.

Episode 117: Obscure Horror Remake: Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979)/The Djinn review

Episode 117: Obscure Horror Remake: Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979)/The Djinn review

May is Obscure Horror Remake month and we start with a big one. 'Nosferatu' may be the most recognized horror movie ever. What about the 1979 remake by Werner Herzog? Plus, we talk about indie horror film 'The Djinn'.

Demon Slayer surprised lots of people by taking the top box office slot from the highly anticipated Mortal Kombat.  There is no denying its popularity, but are we curious enough watch the series? And would we go to a theater to watch the movie?

The Feast premiered at South by Southwest and is one of the best movie we have ever reviewed. IFC Midnight recently announced they have picked it up and have tentatively scheduled it for a Thanksgiving release. Would watching it in a theater add to the intimate experience?

The Djinn is something of a throwback. Taking place over the course of one night in an apartment, the indie horror movie is about a child who wishes for his greatest desire. We talk about horror movie rules, how to use narration effectively, and the power of silence in horror.

May is Obscure Horror Remake Month and this week we talk 1979's Nosferatu the Vampyre. The original is one of the iconic horror films of all time and the Werner Herzog remake is certainly beautiful. But is it good? We talk about the Dracula mythos, the best Renfield ever, and the interesting ending.

Episode 111: Time loops, 'The Feast' review, & 'The Spine of Night' interview

Episode 111: Time loops, 'The Feast' review, & 'The Spine of Night' interview

Danny is back for a packed show as the boys talk time loop movies. Time travel is a popular genre, but time loop stories seem to have a particular appeal. Danny, Blake, and Nathaniel also review Welsh horror movie The Feast from SXSW. Plus, an interview from the filmmakers of The Spine of Night.

The show starts with talk about AMC. It looks like their trials and tribulations may be over. The guys also talk about the upcoming proposed movies about the Queen Mary. The supposedly haunted ship is filled with ghost stories, but can it sustain a trilogy?

This week, the trio review The Feast. The Welsh horror movie recently premiered at this year's South by Southwest. The three talk about the use of language, how to maximize an unsettling atmosphere, and great endings.

The Spine of Night is another movie that made its premiere at SXSW. Nathaniel spoke with the filmmakers of this ultra-violent rotoscoped fantasy.

This week's main segment is on time loops movie. Time travel is a popular genre and the boys focus on what specific part. From their mass appeal to why they seem to more critically accepted, Danny, Blake, and Nathaniel discuss the movies that never seem to know when to end.

The Great Banquet - The Parables E5

The Great Banquet - The Parables E5

Jesus is back in the business of invading our comfort zone and challenging our beliefs with the Parable of The Great Banquet!  At first glance this parable is pretty straight forward, but with an understanding of the cultural context we see how radical Jesus' view on the Kingdom was.  Jesus gave parables to challenge his audience while correcting their flawed theology.  If we read The Parables with that in mind we will find that the words of Jesus still challenge us to grow.

O Come 2020 Advent Devotional Day 2: Fortune telling? Fortune Doing!

O Come 2020 Advent Devotional Day 2: Fortune telling? Fortune Doing!

DAY 2: Many people have a hard time becoming who they want to be because they have been too comfortable to who they have been. It was never our choice to be born into the the situation that we have now, but certainly, we have a choice to give birth to the person we want to become.

Prayer: Jesus, in your Name. I declare freedom from whatever enslaves me in the past, and courage toward what frightens me in the future. Amen.

O Come 2020 Advent Devotional Day 1: Emmanuel Is Coming

O Come 2020 Advent Devotional Day 1: Emmanuel Is Coming

DAY 1: The Christmas season is an exciting and busy season, and we can easily be distracted. In this season, the question of the disciples is actually our question too: “Are You ‘He who is to come’ or do we look for another?” We know Jesus is the One, but it’s easy for us to get excited and look forward to another. But with Jesus, you do not have to search anymore. He has chosen you from the very beginning. You just have to accept Him. To Him, you will always be "The One."

    Gospel Reading: Luke 7:18-3

Prayer: O come, Emmanuel, come. Maranatha! Lord Jesus. Amen.
