The Art of the Dirty Joke | Jackie "The Joke Man" Martling

The Art of the Dirty Joke | Jackie "The Joke Man" Martling

    A Note from James:

Gosh, I can't believe the story Jackie just told about Jeffrey Epstein and Trump and Clinton and everything, but first:

Jackie "The Joke Man" Martling wrote for many years, 15 years for Howard Stern, wrote for Rodney Dangerfield, is an awesome standup comedian. He's just an all-around good guy. I remember the last time Jackie was on the podcast was years ago and, we were talking about what constitutes a "dirty joke".

And he sent me these two huge books, like academic books, about the history of the dirty joke. That's the kind of just generous, good guy Jackie is. He just sent these books and they're fascinating.

Jackie and I got together today. We talked about his history and what's going on and the documentary, 'Joke Man'. It's his whole story. It's really interesting. And his whole career is interesting.

Towards the end - he didn't really hold back - but, I got him to tell this story of his experience with Jeffrey Epstein - and he's innocent of anything, don't make any assumptions there -  but it was just a fascinating story.

So here he is, Jackie "The Joke Man" Martling.

    Episode Description:

The episode weaves together the intriguing personal and professional tales of Jackie 'The Joke Man' Martling, touching upon his comedy career, notable relationships, and memorable experiences with figures like Jeffrey Epstein, Donald Trump, and Bill Clinton. It also details the evolution of Martling's documentary, 'Joke Man,' portraying his comedic journey and life anecdotes.

James and Jackie talk about the evolution of the music industry from the era of Columbia Record Club to the digital age, exploring the changing dynamics of music consumption and artist revenue. Jackie tells stories anecdotes about Willie Nelson, the effects of the pandemic on New York's entertainment scene, and ambitions for a new comedy venue are discussed, highlighting a profound passion for comedy, music history, and the art of storytelling.

BACK TO THE 90s: Reviews of 6 Recent Warner Archive Blu-rays

BACK TO THE 90s: Reviews of 6 Recent Warner Archive Blu-rays

George Feltenstein of the Warner Archive joins the podcast to review six films from the 1990s to 2000 that released for the first time on Blu-ray.

We start with the animated "Rover Dangerfield," (1991) where Rodney Dangerfield's hallmark humor is impeccably tailored to tickle the funny bones of both kids and adults alike.  Next we review the first film released by MTV Films, "Joe's Apartment," (1996) starring a young Jerry O'Connell and a host of singing cockroaches.

From December we start with the excellent, "Saving Grace" (2000), a Indie darling that should not be forgotten, with standout performances from Brenda Blethyn and Craig Ferguson.  We then review the romp "A Midwinter's Tale" (1995), directed by Kenneth Branagh.  This mock-u-mentary style film is a delightful look behind-the-scenes of indie Shakespearean theater.

We wrap up our reviews with two films released in November.  First is the historical drama "Rapa-Nui" (1994) from Kevin Costner's Tig Productions and directed by Kevin Reynolds.  Filmed on location on Easter Island, this story of Polynesian history is a visual  and dramatic delight.  And our last film is the historical romance "In Love and War" (1996) starring Sandra Bullock and Chris O'Donnell and directed by Richard Attenborough.  This beautifully shot film is based on the true-life romance of a young Earnest Hemingway and his experiences in Italy during World War I.

We provide a review of each film,  the restoration, and all of the extras to help you decide if you want to add it to your physical media collection.

1980: Caddyshack / Top Bill Murray Stuff

1980: Caddyshack / Top Bill Murray Stuff

It's happening! After close to three years, we're finally talking about maybe our collective favorite movie ever: 1980's Caddyshack! No movie has been more quoted, more watched, and more important to bringing us together with our friends than Caddyshack. In this episode, we talk all about what makes it great in our opinion.

One of the reasons Caddyshack is so wonderful is the performance of Bill Murray. While Ted Knight (Judge Smails), Rodney Dangerfield (Al Czervik), and Chevy Chase (Ty Webb) are also at the top of their game, Murray's Carl Spackler stands out as much as anyone else. We cap the episode off by drafting our favorite Bill Murray movies and other credits. Well...we're waiting...for you to listen!

This is a public booty announcement: the Valentine’s Day mood enrichment and seductive vibes generator known as the “mixed tape” is in serious danger of becoming a lost art. Ep. 149: Covers From Beyond!!! - HALLOWEEN

In our final week of Gothtober, your fiendish-yet-friendly ghouls bring you an episode all about bands playing other bands' songs! These happen to be familiar songs that you hear at every HALLOWEEN party this time of year! Most of these are in the mainstream pop world… scary!!! However, what vile and twisted interpretations can be made by our rock n’ punk n’ metal ambassadors??? Listen if you dare…

David Parsons from Nostalgia Trap Podcast joins us for a deep dive int Oliver Stone's maximalist 1994 thriller 'Natural Born Killers' starring Woody Harrelson and Juliette Lewis. We discuss the movie's complicated and controversial legacy, how it (sometimes) trancsends its cartoonish pastiche to paint a portrait of American violence and media sensationalism, and how it fits into a broader conversation about problematic and difficult art that is still resonant today.

    Six Dorkgrees of Kevin Bacon

    Six Dorkgrees of Kevin Bacon

Making bacon. Making Kevin Bacon. In this episode we play Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon with random people sent in by our listeners. It's a weird one but we still like it.

    FURTHER DORKSCUSSION:

(From Wikipedia) In a January 1994 interview, Kevin Bacon mentioned that "he had worked with everybody in Hollywood or someone who's worked with them." Later in 1994, three college students Craig Fass, Brian Turtle and Mike Ginelli - invented the game that became known as "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon" after seeing two movies on television that featured Bacon back to back, Footloose and The Air Up There. During the latter film they began to speculate on how many movies Bacon had been in and the number of people with whom he had worked.

A huge thank you to everyone who sent in a name to play!

    Making (Kevin) Bacon!

An even huger thank you to Lorna Gilfedder for absolutely beautiful Dork Matters jingle! What a complete treat!

    Caddyshack

    Caddyshack
Sports Month plays through on Late to the Movies with one of the most beloved comedies of all time... Caddyshack! Ben, Greg, and Robbie talk about the drug-fueled mania of this 1980 classic and whether it holds up four decades after its release before playing a round of CaddyshaQ. They also repeatedly say "groundhog" when they mean "gopher." Directed by Harold Ramis and written to star Michael O'Keefe, but really starring Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, and Rodney Dangerfield.

    Ladybugs

    Ladybugs

Sean and Brad review 1992's Ladybugs.  Did you watch Ladybugs as a kid?  Did you love it as a kid?  Have you seen it recently?  Did you still love it?  Are you a horrible person if  you do?  Yes.  Yes you are.  The cringes are too many to list but Sean and Brad discuss them all.  This movie is horrible, but Jackée is in it and she's hilarious.

    52. Caddyshack, Families

    52. Caddyshack, Families

Shalon joins the EDT family to help Phil and Jake rank the 1980s comedy classic Caddyshack and the concept of families on the List of Every Damn Thing.

If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).

    SHOW NOTES:

    • There’s some confusion during our conversation as to how the characters in The Blue Lagoon are related. While researching the matter, Jake was relieved to discover that they aren’t siblings, but unsettled upon learning that they’re cousins.
    • We of course talk quite a bit about the sublime performance of  Rodney Dangerfield, especially his facial expressions (such as this hat reaction) and his dancing.
    • Phil speculates that maybe Caddyshack was autobiographical. It was, but mostly pulled from Brian Doyle-Murray's experiences. From one of the better Caddyshack "things you didn't know" pages out there: "To write their screenplay, Ramis, Kenney, and Doyle-Murray locked themselves in a room and tried to recall everything they knew about or experienced at golf courses and country clubs growing up—most of which came from Doyle-Murray, who caddied at Indian Hill Country Club in the suburbs of Chicago as a kid."
    • When talking about Mad Magazine, Phil couldn't remember the name of cartoonist Mort Drucker. Chevy Chase  looks like if his own Mort Drucker caricature came to life.
    • In the Marx Brothers movies, the role of Margaret Dumont was to sell the Marx Brothers by reacting to their bullshit.
    • Phil says "empty pool" when he means to say "drained pool" politics while talking about The Sum of Us by Heather Mcgee.
    • Here’s the scene from Natural Born Killers that features Rodney. It’s disturbing, but it’s also the best part of the movie.
    • We mention “Weird Al” Yankovic. There’s none of this in the podcast, but we think you should know that Phil's wife Beth continues to talk about her new character, a terrifying vision from the future Weird AI. He's a song parody writing artificial intelligence at the end of time.
