    Valentine's Day

    Valentine's Day

What better way to celebrate the capitalism of Valentine's Day than with a big blockbuster film? Join us for a state of the union on late 00s queer rep (TL;DR – there are way too many straight white people), Taylor's Swift rocky acting career, Jordan's enduring love for Bradley Cooper, Brooke's enduring love for Anne Hathaway, and a bite-sized review of the new Mean Girls movie.

    A Cinderella Story

    A Cinderella Story

We're headed back to 2004 with A Cinderella Story, starring Hilary Duff, Chad Michael Murray and a wicked step-mother played by podcast favorite, Jennifer Coolidge. This one is technically a "teen romantic comedy," so we'll count it.

Sam wants more out of life than being her step-family's live-in servant. She's also tired of being teased by the rich, popular kids at her San Fernando Valley high school. So she's graduating early and setting off to Princeton to start fresh. Before she can make her escape, she develops a flirtation with another Princeton hopeful at her school, a boy who uses the screenname "Nomad". He'd really like to meet her at the Homecoming dance. What could possibly go wrong?

Ella of Frell was blessed with the gift of obedience as a baby and she's sick of it. Deciding enough is enough, she embarks on a quest to find her fairy godmother, Lucinda, the only person capable of removing the spell. She makes new friends on her journey, including the handsome Prince Char and an elf who wants to be a lawyer.

    Bringing Up Baby

    Bringing Up Baby

This week, by popular demand, we watched the 1938 screwball comedy Bringing Up Baby, starring podcast favorites Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant. Susan is a flighty and infuriating heiress in possession of a leopard (possibly spelled with a "w". "Leopawd"?). David is a paleontologist who needs a million dollars for his museum and really wants to finish assembling his dinosaur. That sounds like a meet cute waiting to happen to us!

We had to rent this one on Amazon Prime. Tune in today to hear our thoughts!

Leah Bonnema is not only a longtime fan of the genre, she has contributed to it as the author of THE HOLIDAY BREAKDOWN, a Christmas rom-com novel.

    Runaway Bride

    Runaway Bride

Our Julia Roberts streak continues this week with Runaway Bride! This unlikely spiritual successor to Pretty Woman reunites Julia Roberts, Richard Gere, Hector Elizondo,  Larry Miller, Patrick Richwood (the elevator operator!), Kathleen Marshall and director Gary Marshall.

Journalist Ike Graham is a columnist for USA Today. Short on time, he decides to write a scathing piece about a woman in a small town in Maryland who has left men at the altar 7 or 8 times. She's even got another one on the hook! He doesn't bother to check his sources (or source. He's been talking to one guy in a bar), and is promptly fired when the subject of his story sends her own blistering letter to the editor, pointing out numerous factual errors. In an attempt to save his career, Ike goes to Maryland to meet this woman, her family and her friends, and report on his findings to the world. So noble. Listen to our recap and review of this movie today!

You can find Runaway Bride on Netflix.

Content Warning: this important episode contains talk about sexual situations, assault and rape. Resources for survivors are below.

It may not be anyone’s favorite topic, but taking care of business is empowering and this is the business, educating ourselves and, importantly, our kids and younger generations on how to be safe and considerate with our bodies.

It seems obvious that in order to clarify the lines of intimacy, words should be involved. But it’s probably true that many people don’t know what those words are or how or when to say them. That’s where Ellen comes in. Words are helpful always, but especially in even trickier situations of cross-cultural communications or neurodiversity.

Trouble in Paradise (1932) w/ David Bluvband

Trouble in Paradise (1932) w/ David Bluvband

"A gentleman thief and a lady pickpocket join forces to con a beautiful perfume company owner!"

The twisting turns of a con-artist drama meet the ping-pong dialogue of a romantic comedy, all with that classic Ernst Lubitsch touch. Actor David Bluvband joins us to talk about 1932's Trouble in Paradise. We discuss bawdy humor, the Hays code, and of course, which Super Mario Bros. character would play which role in the film.
