    Startup Series: Rondo Energy

    Startup Series: Rondo Energy

John O'Donnell is the Co-founder and CEO of Rondo Energy

Rondo is tackling the massive emissions problem of industrial heat. Almost everything around us requires heat to be made, from chemicals, to paper, to cement, to steel, and historically, nearly all of that heat comes from burning fossil fuels. Renewable energy is now becoming cheaper to procure than fossil fuels, but as we know, it's intermittent, and a factory needs access to heat for its processes when it needs it. So how do we harness the fluctuating availability of renewable power and let industry turn it into a reliable and extremely high temperature heat as needed?

John believes that figuring this out is the opportunity of a lifetime and one of the biggest levers to unlock decarbonizing our economy. The Rondo heat battery, in simplest terms, takes electricity and turns it into heat via an electric heating element, like those found in a toaster, and then circulates that heat across a condensed package of bricks that can currently achieve heat of up to 1500 degrees Celsius and store it at high efficiency for extremely long periods of time.

It's a surprisingly low-tech sounding approach for a very complex problem. In this episode, John discusses the problems of industrial heat, how industry has historically solved them, some emerging technologies competing to decarbonize heat, and how Rondo works. We also talk about how project financing is evolving to consider not just the power generation capabilities of a renewable energy project, but how an end-to-end system such as renewable energy plus heat or storage can change costs for an industrial heat and power consumer.

    In this episode, we cover:

    • [03:13]: John's background in computer science, building companies, and working in the solar thermal space
    • [06:08]: Introduction to global industrial heat needs
    • [08:17]: Why it's challenging to harness renewable energy for industrial heat
    • [11:30]: Why using electricity off the grid isn't feasible
    • [13:05]: Falling cost of renewables and policies driving decarbonization of industrial heat
    • [14:58] Carbon capture and the concept of a “green premium”
    • [17:12]: The new class of electric thermal energy storage technologies
    • [19:14]: Pros and cons of alternative energy storage options
    • [24:09]: Overview of Rondo's tech
    • [37:26]: How Rondo can convert stored heat back to electricity for grid supply
    • [39:03]: How John sees the evolution of Rondo
    • [43:11]: Rondo's projects in operation today
    • [45:24]: Partnering with manufacturers and exploring zero-emission cement manufacturing
    • [51:32]: The size and makeup of Rondo's products
    • [53:53]: How the project financing space has evolved
    • [59:12]: John's closing thoughts and opportunities in the space

Two amazing humans navigate the grey as we discuss the highway system. You heard that right, highways! But stick with us, we think this is a powerful topic. When we think about our own convenience and the ways we travel, we often fail to notice or think about the structural racism that is literally embedded in the very structures we use for our travel. We talk about how highways displace people of color, reinforce segregation, limit access and resources, create environmental hazards, and allow others to complete avoid passing through.

#16: Mid-way through NBA Second Round, what's changed?

#16: Mid-way through NBA Second Round, what's changed?

In this episode we'll recap how the second round of the 2021 NBA Playoffs is going so far! At time of recording, the Sixers and Hawks were tied at 1-1, Nets were up 2-1 on Bucks, Suns were up 2-0 on Nuggets, and Jazz were up 2-0 on Clippers.

    Some highlights so far:

    • Donovan Mitchell is BALLING! 45 in Game 1, 27 first half points in Game 2 (finished with 37), and Jazz have held on to win a few nail-biters at home in Utah.
    • Suns have a balanced offense, Booker doesn't need to drop 30 to win a game. They've proven that in both series so far.
    • Bucks defense is getting torched in Brooklyn, sans Harden. They slowed down the game enough to win on a game winning layup by Jrue Holiday in game 3, but can they keep up. We talk chances of Harden coming back as well.
    • Embiid looks healthy and not injured at all. Has played over 30 minutes every game, playoff career high 40 in game 2 and dominating the thinner Capela.

    What happened Friday night:

    • Philly wins game 3 behind another big game from Embiid. They are now up 2-1
      • Joel Embiid had 27, 9 boards, and 8 asssits.
      • Tobias Harris chipped in with 22 and 8
    • 3 headed monster for PHX as they cruise against Nuggets for 3-0 lead
      • Ayton: 10 and 15
      • CP3: 27 and 8 assists
      • Devin Booker: 28 and 6 boards
      • Jokic finishes with 32, 20 boards, 10 assits in loss. Had 10 offensive rebounds.

We also take a look at the tournament challenge for who will win a FREE In N Out Sports Podcast "Sims' Stats" or "Dub's Diaries" shirt and see how many brackets got busted for having Lakers make it to the finals.

#13: 2010 PGs: Rondo vs. Westbrook vs. Rose - Which Polarizing Point Guard was more fun?

#13: 2010 PGs: Rondo vs. Westbrook vs. Rose - Which Polarizing Point Guard was more fun?

In this episode we'll do another variant of player comparisons, this one not necessarily judging who is better, but our opinions on a few of the most controversial and dominant point guards of the 2010 Era: Rajon Rondo, Derrick Rose, and Russell Westbrook.

These 3 PGs were perhaps not the mainstays of this entire decade (Chris Paul probably has that title), nor where they most dominant and well known (that one goes to Curry), but each had a stretch where they were considered the best for a short window.

Rondo has the claim from 2009-2013, battling out with Derrick Rose in 2010-2012 where he won his MVP, and Westbrook had flashes of dominance early in 2012-2014, but then also his MVP tear after KD left in 2017-2019.

Each has their controversy though: discouraged Rondo in latter Boston years, Mavs, and journeymen years, Rose's injuries robbing the world of what could have been and having his prime removed after just 2 years, and Westbrook with the "empty stat padder" and "cancer" reputations that have plagued him for years.

Follow along as we take a look at the stats, the reasoning and other advanced metrics that no one seems to talk about (like the "eye test" and who changed the game the most), to see who we come up with as well as our subjective opinion on these 3 influential guys who crossed over the same era.

So who are you in on? Relive some of the best games/highlights for each of them:
