    Inside Europe 18.05.2023
Turkey's presidential election goes to a second round, hopes fade for those still missing months after Turkey's quakes, and what next for Georgia's EU membership hopes? Also: how are Kyiv residents coping with the on-off threat of Russian strikes, La Palma votes for the first time since the volcanic eruption, and Dutch help for those grieving for lives lost during the pandemic.

What we know – and don't know – about the Nord Stream sabotage

There's still no conclusive answer to the six-month-old question of who blew up the Nord Stream pipelines, which sent geopolitical shockwaves around the world. POLITICO’s Charlie Cooper breaks down the prevailing theories and the global energy implications of each culprit. Plus, Senator Joe Manchin said he would not support President Joe Biden’s nominee to a top Interior Department position.   Josh Siegel is an energy reporter for POLITICO.  Charlie Cooper is the Chief UK correspondent at POLITICO Europe. Why Putin’s energy strategy backfired

    Why Putin’s energy strategy backfired
When Russia invaded Ukraine a year ago, Moscow thought it could intimidate Kyiv’s European allies through energy blackmail. But that strategy has actually backfired because of America’s growing energy role in Europe’s economy and the changing global energy landscape. POLITICO’s Ben Lefebvre breaks down how the energy world has changed since Russia invaded Ukraine. Plus, President Joe Biden nominated former Mastercard CEO Ajay Banga to head the World Bank.   Josh Siegel is an energy reporter for POLITICO.  Ben Lefebvre is an energy reporter for POLITICO.  Nirmal Mulaikal is a POLITICO audio host-producer. From Ukraine, war reporting that feels personal

From Ukraine, war reporting that feels personal

Photographer Anastasia Taylor-Lind and writer Alisa Sopova create intimate, accessible portraits of Ukrainian civilians living close to the frontlines of the Russian invasion. Sometimes their subjects are picnicking in a park or tending a garden. Other times, they’re repairing a ceiling damaged by shelling or waiting for departure on an evacuation train. Anastasia and Alisa have been working together in Ukraine since the Maidan Revolution, also known as the “Revolution of Dignity” in 2014. And over the years, they’ve returned to visit the same families, witnessing how the war touches men, women, and children over time.

An exhibition of their work in Ukraine is showing at the Imperial War Museum in London from February 3 through May 8, 2023.

How Did Russian Oligarchs Get So Rich?

How Did Russian Oligarchs Get So Rich?

Russian Oligarchs have become synonymous with superyachts, luxury mansions and the shady political maneuvering of post-Soviet Russia. Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Russian billionaires like Roman Abramovich, Vladimir Potanin, Alisher Usmanov and Oleg Deripaska have been all over the news.

The word Oligarch conjures up images of opportunistic, well-connected businessmen who made billions by plundering the remains of the collapsed Soviet state. But how exactly did Russia’s oligarchs get so rich?

Why Ukraine needs US cash to pay for natural gas

Why Ukraine needs US cash to pay for natural gas

Twitter's growth potential, investors' love of buy-back stories, and the prospect of a ceasefire-fueled rally w/ Whitney Tilson.

Twitter's growth potential, investors' love of buy-back stories, and the prospect of a ceasefire-fueled rally w/ Whitney Tilson.
We got so much out of our chat with Empire Financial Research's Whitney Tilson on Decoded last week that we asked if he'd sit down with us again to talk about what's going on in the world right now. The former hedge fund manager and current investment newsletter publisher delivered, just as he does to 140,000 avid readers of his daily takes on market movers and shakers. In our stimulating chat, Whitney tells us why he's confident about a ceasefire in Ukraine and a resulting rally in beaten-down growth stocks, skeptical that a viable alternative to the US dollar's reserve currency status exists, optimistic about Twitter's potential to become a 10-bagger in the next decade, and so much more.

Starbucks vs. Putin: a hard lesson in cancel culture, geopolitical alpha, and leveraging history to be a better investor with Marko Papic.

Starbucks vs. Putin: a hard lesson in cancel culture, geopolitical alpha, and leveraging history to be a better investor with Marko Papic.
To understand current events, it's crucial to understand the events of the past. Today we're joined by someone who can enrich our understanding of what's going on right now by looking at it through a historical lens. Marko Papic's career has seen him at the nexus of geopolitics and finance. He is a Partner and Chief Strategist at Clocktower Group and the author of Geopolitical Alpha: An Investment Framework for Predicting the Future. During a gripping discussion, we discuss Russia's territorial vulnerability, its recent military record, and how other countries with plans for territorial expansion will be now factoring in the high cost of corporate warfare. Marko also argues that Russia's invasion of Ukraine is a distraction to a macro investor and that the macro truth was revealed prior to the current conflict.

POLITICO’s Zack Colman explains.   Kelsey Tamborrino is a reporter covering clean energy and is the host of the POLITICO Energy podcast.  Zack Colman covers climate change for POLITICO.  Nirmal Mulaikal is a POLITICO audio host-producer.  Carlos Prieto is an audio producer for POLITICO.  Raghu Manavalan is a senior editor for POLITICO audio.
