JUSTIN BOZUNG (The Cinema of Norman Mailer) joins Andras Jones & Bryan Connolly for the season 3 opener devoted to Norman Mailer’s much maligned Cape Cod noir.

How is the world wrong about Tough Guys Don’t Dance?

From Andras: To read or listen to most opinions of this film, you would think it was one of the worst ever made. Don’t be fooled! This is a masterful Cape Cod noir from one of the late 20th centuries most important artists. We’re joined by Justin Bozung, the editor of “The Cinema of Norman Mailer” (also featured on the Blu Ray commentary for the film) to dig deeply into this misunderstood masterpiece.

Actor Bree Elrod on ‘Paper Moon’

Joining us this week is the magnificent actor Bree Elrod. You can see Bree in one of 2021’s best films, ‘Red Rocket.’ But she’s on the show this week to talk about 1973’s ‘Paper Moon’ and the character of Addie Loggins played by Tatum O’Neal. Bree discusses trying to maintain the level of curiosity and openness in her acting that is inhabited by O’Neal’s fresh-faced performance in the film. Bree also talks about working with Sean Baker and what it was like acting with the locals in Texas City in ‘Red Rocket.’ Plus, at the end of the show, Jordan highlights the best horror movies of 2021.

070 | An Alan Smithee Film: Burn Hollywood Burn

070 | An Alan Smithee Film: Burn Hollywood Burn

Connor and Jon are left nearly speechless by the tastelessness of the film that "Hollywood doesn't want you to see." There's good reason for that slogan as it is nearly unbearable to watch. Even so, the boys slug through the film and rag on this weird part of film history that is better left forgotten.

    Barry Lyndon (1975), Spartacus (1960), Ran (1985)

Welcome to (perhaps) the largest Extra Milestone yet! In an Anyway, That’s All I Got reunion for the ages, I’m joined by Anthony Battaglia, Guy Simons Jr., and Jason Read to discuss three of the biggest epics of the 21st century! First up is Barry Lyndon, the passion project of Stanley Kubrick released in 1975, and a film that’s quite well-loved among hardcore cinephiles. After that, we circle back to Spartacus, an earlier Kubrick film that is rarely discussed in the context of his filmography, and perhaps for just reason! Finally, we jump forward to another one of the great directors with Ran, Akira Kurosawa’s massive and operatic masterpiece from 1985, and which only one of us had seen!

    SHOW NOTES:

    • 01:06:33 – Spartacus
    • 01:48:21 – Ran

HOSTED BY: Sam Noland, Anthony Battaglia, Guy Simons Jr., and Jason Read

MUSIC IN THIS EPISODE: Music from Barry Lyndon composed by Georg Friedrich Händel and performed by The Gold Rush Studio Orchestra, music from Ran composed by Tóru Takemitsu

'What's Up, Doc?' with Brian Masefield and Christina Walsh of Old Roommates

'What's Up, Doc?' with Brian Masefield and Christina Walsh of Old Roommates
"What's Up, Doc?", Peter Bogdanovich's 1972 screwball classic, may be an atypical Barbra Streisand movie, but it was Matt's introduction to the singer, actress, and filmmaker. While maybe not the perfect intro to Streisand, it's still a personal favorite of Matt's, so it felt right to share with newcomers Brian and Christina of the Old Roommates podcast. They discuss the enigma that is Barbra Streisand, the many films that inspired Peter Bogdanovich, the greatness of Madeleine Kahn how, how screwball comedies had fallen out of fashion by the '70s, and just how much character development you need to make a wacky comedy like "What's Up, Doc?" work. Brian Masefield and Christina Walsh host Old Roommates (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/old-roommates/id1475619122), the only weekly podcast that revisits pop culture through a middle-aged lens.
