Ep562 Decluttering Our Lives Creates Space to Embrace God’s Sabbath Rest - Keri Wyatt Kent
How do you take care of yourself and your spirituality when your life revolves around taking care of someone else? This is a question that Keri Wyatt Kent sought to answer after having two kids in just two years. She is the founder of A Powerful Story and the author of an impactful book, Rest: Living in Sabbath Simplicity. Keri discusses the easy and uncomplicated pathway to true, Biblical rest and why it’s so important to declutter our everyday lives for our own sakes and for the sake of our families. Taking a sabbath allows us to participate in a miracle, she shares. You don’t need to be busy to feel accomplished or significant. God loves you! Take the time to rest as a family and embrace the quiet amid the chaos. TAKEAWAYS Three words that you can embrace in the process of resting: no, enough, and stop If you say yes to something, you have to say no to something else, so make sure you are committing to what God has called you to You can’t love in a hurry If you’re always too busy or wrapped up in yourself, you won’t have time to help other people or love on them well

    Sermon 68 in Series

    Exodus 25:23-40

[23] “You shall make a table of acacia wood. Two cubits shall be its length, a cubit its breadth, and a cubit and a half its height. [24] You shall overlay it with pure gold and make a molding of gold around it. [25] And you shall make a rim around it a handbreadth wide, and a molding of gold around the rim. [26] And you shall make for it four rings of gold, and fasten the rings to the four corners at its four legs. [27] Close to the frame the rings shall lie, as holders for the poles to carry the table. [28] You shall make the poles of acacia wood, and overlay them with gold, and the table shall be carried with these. [29] And you shall make its plates and dishes for incense, and its flagons and bowls with which to pour drink offerings; you shall make them of pure gold. [30] And you shall set the bread of the Presence on the table before me regularly.

[31] “You shall make a lampstand of pure gold. The lampstand shall be made of hammered work: its base, its stem, its cups, its calyxes, and its flowers shall be of one piece with it. [32] And there shall be six branches going out of its sides, three branches of the lampstand out of one side of it and three branches of the lampstand out of the other side of it; [33] three cups made like almond blossoms, each with calyx and flower, on one branch, and three cups made like almond blossoms, each with calyx and flower, on the other branch—so for the six branches going out of the lampstand. [34] And on the lampstand itself there shall be four cups made like almond blossoms, with their calyxes and flowers, [35] and a calyx of one piece with it under each pair of the six branches going out from the lampstand. [36] Their calyxes and their branches shall be of one piece with it, the whole of it a single piece of hammered work of pure gold. [37] You shall make seven lamps for it. And the lamps shall be set up so as to give light on the space in front of it. [38] Its tongs and their trays shall be of pure gold. [39] It shall be made, with all these utensils, out of a talent of pure gold. [40] And see that you make them after the pattern for them, which is being shown you on the mountain.

    DEEP SHEET: Sermon Study Questions
    1.
How does the ark function as a container of remembrance? How does the Bible help us to continually remember God’s work on our behalf?
    2.   How is the table similar to the ark? In what ways do the table and lampstand further emphasize holiness?
    3.   What is the purpose of the bread? How does it point backwards and forwards?
    4.   How is the lampstand both functional and symbolic? What does it say about the Lord and his people?
    5.   How does the lampstand with its lamps anticipate the coming of Christ? What does it practically look like for Christians to be “the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14)?
    6.   Now that we have looked at the furniture within the two sections of the tent, what justification do we have for saying that the tabernacle is deeply christological?

David and The Ark [David 06]

    2 Samuel 6: 1-15 // Tom Nelson

Where is lasting joy found? It is not found in managing God, lasting joy is found in the presence of God. Without God, there is no lasting joy. C.S. Lewis thought a lot about joy. One of his interesting insights I think he had about joy was the importance of proximity when it comes to experiencing joy. “If you want to get warm you must stand near the fire: if you want to be wet you must get into the water. If you want joy, power, peace, eternal life, you must get close to, or even into, the thing that has them.” Lewis is right, proximity matters, and so does presence. Joy flows in and through a close relationship with God himself. Without him, there is no lasting joy. Being yoked with Jesus leads us to a more attentive life, one that enjoys the presence of God and experiences lasting joy. He wants to show us the way. Will you trust him?

    Hard Work in the Kingdom

    Hard Work in the Kingdom

When you find work that gives you joy, criticism arises: well, it must not be hard work (and hard work is the only work that counts); that's great you have that, but when are you getting a real job?; and, with your education and experience you should be able to get a good job, not this...whatever you're doing.

But are those things important? Will God only call you to do the most difficult things? What constitutes a "real" job? And isn't working for the kingdom "good"?

Answers to all this and more in today's episode as we continue to look at work, redefined.

Your Labor is Not in Vain

Your Labor is Not in Vain

When God said: "Six days you shall work, but on the Seventh you must rest," was it one command? Or two? That is, do we only work because we must? And only rest because we must? Or was this commandment put in place because without it, we would love work so much as to do it every day? My guess is most of us would take any any time off from our jobs that we could--but I don't think that's what God intended when He "prepared good works in advance" for us to do. Listen in as we try to re-imagine a life of working for God.

Episode 61: Five Ways to Fight for Joy with Becky Novacek
I think we all have people in our life who inspire us, challenge us, and teach us - people who bring so much good stuff to the table when you get together that you can’t help but be all ears and just want to soak it all in. Becky Novacek is one of those people in my life. Every time we are able to connect, I learn. I leave feeling inspired and encouraged. You might recognize Becky because she's been on the podcast before (Episode #22 - Fighting for Joy with a Healthy Mindset). I wanted to have her back on now because over the course of the past year she and I have had so many rich conversations about ALL kinds of things and I wanted to share pieces of that with all of you. Today I asked her to share a "Top 5" list of ways that she is fighting for joy in this season of her life. I think you’ll love her wise perspective about things like identity, loving well, and seeking beauty. Becky is so tender to the things of the Lord and I know you'll be blessed by the way she ties everything back to her faith and her relationship with God. My last episode was with Brooke Kyes, a young mom in her 20s, and today its a woman thriving in her 60s. Its such a privilege to bring you a wide range of perspectives. Each season of life brings its blessings and challenges and its so helpful to hear stories of how to fight for joy through it all! So today, soak in the words of my dear friend Becky. As always, if you find some encouragement in this episode, I would LOVE to hear from you. And, I always appreciate when you share the podcast with others. 69. Unscrambling Christ's Easy Yoke

    Episode 69 -  Unscrambling Christ's Easy Yoke

Feb 16, 2022 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall

In this episode we attempt to unscramble Christ's easy yoke. When Jesus offered rest to the weary and heavy-laden, He harnessed a yoke to His offer. Throughout the Bible, yokes are closely associated with the work of slavery and unfortunately, Christ's yoke has been mixed-up and misunderstood by many. So, let's try unscramble this one.

    68. What's Left of Sabbath Rest?

    68. What's Left of Sabbath Rest?

Episode 68 -  What's Left of Sabbath Rest

Feb 9, 2022 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall

Many of the books written on the topic of biblical rest focus largely on the observance of the Old Testament's fourth commandment. But the seventh-day sabbath is just a small sliver of what the Bible has to say on the topic. The author of Hebrews spends nearly two chapters discussing the "rest that remains for the people of God," yet never mentions the seventh-day sabbath anywhere in his argument. This prompts the question, "What's Left of Sabbath Rest?"

Eat Your Veggies, Part 4: Sabbath Rest // Jamie Nunnally

Eat Your Veggies, Part 4: Sabbath Rest // Jamie Nunnally

Feeling tired, worn out, or overwhelmed? God has a solution for that in His word - it's called the Sabbath! In this message, Pastor Jamie Nunnally shares God's plan for Sabbath rest.

Most of us have little to no margin.
Your margin is the difference between your current activity and maximum capacity.

On a sheet of paper, a margin is an area of blank space where there is no activity before the edge. White space makes text readable. Margins make life livable.
    Psalm 90:12
“God is nowhere” becomes “God is now here” when you add space.

    God’s design for rest:
    1. Deal with fear.
It’s fear that moves us beyond our margins.
John 14:27 “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.”
We fear missing out - Fear of missing out often leads to burning out.
We fear falling behind - Don’t worry about keeping up with the Jones, they’re broke too.
We fear that we are insignificant - Fear of not mattering has the potential to draw us
away from that what matters most.

    2. Manage your time wisely.
Ephesians 5:15-16 Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.
If you don’t decide how to use your time, others will decide for you.
Rest is not always the lack of activity but making time for what fill you and heals you.

    3. Practice Sabbath rest.
God wants you to use His example and take a break.
Hebrews 4:9-10 “So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, 10 for whoever has entered God's rest has also rested from his works as God did from his.”
For the Christian, the Sabbath is not a specific day when we rest, but a life of faith while we rest.

Jesus was always going off by Himself.
    1. To prepare for ministry. Luke 4:1-2; 12-14-15
    2. To get away after ministry. Mark 6:30-32
    3. To make an important decision. Luke 6:12-13
    4. To grieve. Matthew 14:1-13
    5. To discern the will of God. Luke 22:39-44
    6. To spend alone time with the Father.  Luke 5:16

If you try to do everything you won’t enjoy anything.
If you try to help everyone you won’t help anyone.

    Rest requires resolve.

Matthew 11:28-30 “Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”

    Are you enjoying Sabbath rest?

S2, Ep. 15: Be Still, Part 2: "God Help!"

S2, Ep. 15: Be Still, Part 2: "God Help!"

Do you have trouble being still? Is it difficult for you to quiet the chaos and draw close to God

This sequence of words may not be very appealing: “Be still, and know…” (Psalm 46:10)

First, being still is not as easy as it sounds. Second, we want to keep moving…discovering, knowing what lies ahead and what’s next… There is this natural urge to figure out and control our domains, even when doing ministry work.

There’s so much to do and know. How can we just stop?

This is the second part of Coffee with Jesus, episode 14 (Be Still). Co-hosts Todd and Sara talk about the struggle with domain and control. They talk about the process of “trusted knowing” and how it works. They will also share some tools you can readily use to be still and know the next step in the right direction.

Listen to the episode to know how to stop and connect with the gift of the Holy Spirit. And in doing so, learn the power behind this simple prayer: “God help!"
