See How They Run: wasted potential

See How They Run: wasted potential

A comedic take on a murder mystery had so much potential, but unfortunately, the creators of SEE HOW THEY RUN wasted it with what can only be described as lazy writing and lazy editing. This is what happens when the writers of murder mysteries aren't also superfans of the genre, or when they try to cut corners. This week, Valerie discusses the unfortunate skinny wrist reveal, and Melanie walks us through all the clues and red herrings. Do you agree with their analysis?

    Argylle review

    Argylle review

In Argylle, spy movies get turned on their heads quite a bit. The main character is reclusive, shy author Elly Conway who writes best-selling novels about a spy named Argylle. She gets writers block while writing the latest book but some real-life spy action she suddenly finds herself might inspire some creativity. This starts when she is rescued by a spy played by Sam Rockwell and Elly is thrust into a real world of espionage with her beloved cat, Alfie, tagging along. She soon finds out she’s being pursued by a rogue spy agency with murder on their mind. Is this movie worth checking out to see who all this unfolds? Check out this show to find out. Argylle is directed by Matthew Vaughn, written by Jason Fuchs and stars Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell, Henry Cavill, Dua Lipa, Bryan Cranston, John Cena, Ariana DuBose, Richard E. Grant, Tomas Paredes, Alaa Habib and Jing Lusi.

    Episode 46: Moon (2009)

    Episode 46: Moon (2009)

On this episode of B&R at the Movies podcast Berry and Robin dive into the film Moon from 2009. This film is a tour de force performance by Sam Rockwell. This also features Kevin Spacey for his voice work. Set in a future world that doesn't seem too far off from our own reality. Sam is an isolated worker on the moon who is just trying to do his work and finish out his three-year stint, when his world (our moon) gets turned upside down. This very imaginative film is written and directed by Duncan Jones.

Episode 48: The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford

Episode 48: The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford

This week on Remainders, we talk the 2007 gem The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. Partially forgotten and possibly overshadowed by No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood upon its release, Assassination is absolutely an essential modern western. Brad Pitt plays Jesse James who is put on a pedestal by Casey Affleck’s Robert Ford. As Ford idolizes and fawns over James and tries to become one of the gang, he learns the man and the myth do not align. A story about paranoia and disillusionment that is both poetic and dreamlike, elevated by Roger Deakins’ cinematography and Nick Cave and Warren Ellis’ epic score.

Other topics include the woes of streaming, Kurt Russell battling Godzilla, what makes for a great film score, the sad Affleck brothers, and difficulties with tongue twister movie titles.

Lawn Dogs (w/ Renée and Anna)

Laura touted this film as one of the seminal films that triggered this whole podcast journey. This was way before there was even a podcast and a website was involved with a completely different name. Laura had seen this film many moons ago and with its importance no short stretch in relation to the birthing of the podcast, we gathered a crack team of friends to analyze and scrutinize. Returning guest Renée and newcomer Anna join the usual pair for a critical look at this John Duigan film.

Let's just say delicately, this film is equal parts troubling, amusing, disturbing, and a real test of what you would find morally acceptable and no one (Laura included, funnily) ever thought we'd be put in such a quandary. Accompanying this video is also a moment at the 2015 Florida Film Festival at the Enzian Theater which had "An Evening with Sam Rockwell" on stage for a live Q&A and a young Laura asking him the important question if he's do any more films like this one. Catch that in our most recent videos tab on YouTube!
