McGwire vs. Sosa - The Home Run Race of '98

Buckle up, folks! In this episode, we're throwing it backTWENTY-FIVE years (if you can believe it)  to relive the epic home run race of 1998 between two baseball titans: Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa.

Baseball was in dire need of some adrenaline, and boy, did these guys deliver! We'll give you the lowdown on the state of baseball back then, and why Roger Maris' single-season home run record since '61 had us all on the edge of our seats.

Get ready to meet the main eventers: Mark McGwire, the power-smashing machine who took the league by storm in '96 with a jaw-dropping 52 homers, and Sammy Sosa, the Dominican dynamo who overcame obstacles to become a force to be reckoned with.

When the '98 season kicked off, things went wild! We'll take you through the nail-biting head-to-head showdowns, the friendly banter, and those unforgettable moments that had us cheering like crazy. From record-breaking blasts to clutch performances, these guys were pure magic.

Picture this: the air thick with anticipation as McGwire crushed his 62nd homer, smashing Maris' record. But hold up, Sosa wasn't one to back down. He went on a tear, closing the gap and making this race even more electric. The fans, the media, and the players couldn't get enough!

Now, let's address the elephant in the room: the controversy around performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs). We'll dig into the aftermath, the investigations, and the impact on how we view this epic battle today.

But hey, let's not forget the lasting legacy of this showdown. Baseball made an epic comeback, and the memories it left behind still give us goosebumps. We'll dive into that legacy, the impact on the sport, and the nostalgic vibes it brings.

Whether you were there, living and breathing the race, or you're just discovering this wild ride, our podcast episode will teleport you back to '98. This week, Andrew, Rex and Craig examine the Hall of Fame baseball writers' vote that saw David Ortiz just over the 75% vote for induction with Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens and Sammy Sosa, to name three, falling short in in their final year for eligibility. We discuss that trio's possible path to induction as well as this year's six veteran's committee selections. Hooks & Runs reflects upon Jack Powell, the only pitcher in the top ten in career MLB losses that is NOT in the Baseball Hall of Fame. The show concludes with the trio riffing on Ted Gioia's essay in TheAtlantic.com, "Is Old Music Killing New Music?" Spoiler alert! We answer "yes!" but old music has a lot of help.

30 | Baseball as a Mediated Latinidad and Latino Threat Narratives in MLB with Dr. Jennifer L. Rudolph

30 | Baseball as a Mediated Latinidad and Latino Threat Narratives in MLB with Dr. Jennifer L. Rudolph

Miguel welcomed Dr. Jennifer L. Rudolph to the podcast to discuss Baseball as Mediated Latinidad, including racist Latino Threat Narratives in baseball that are a microcosm of US white supremacy society.

Dr. Rudolph is an Associate Professor of Hispanic Studies at Connecticut College and author of Baseball as Mediated Latinidad: Race, Masculinity, Nationalism, and performance of Identity. Dr. Rudolph's research interests include U.S. Latino expressive cultures, Latino identity formation, transnationalism, urban studies, and teaching Spanish to heritage/native speakers.

First, Miguel asked Dr. Rudolph why it was essential for her to analyze new forms of media, such as social media, for her book, Baseball as Mediated Latinidad? Second, Miguel also asked Jennifer about her opening chapter, "La crema de Sammy Sosa," and her analysis of legendary Dominican and former Chicago Cubs star Sammy Sosa. Specifically, Miguel asked Jennifer to explain how specific events tied to Sosa's career and post-career intersected with race, class, and gender issues.

Next, Miguel and Dr. Rudolph discussed the controversy regarding Marc Anthony singing the national anthem at the 2013 all-star game and how it was another example of Anthropologist Leo Chavez's Latino Threat Narrative. Miguel and Dr. Rudolph also discuss how the World Baseball Classic and the 2017 Puerto Rico National team connect to nationalism, race, assimilation, and masculinity. For example, Dr. Rudolph discussed how her analysis of the Puerto Rican national team showed the contradictions between Latinos perceived as threats by white fans instead of representing nationalistic pride to Puerto Rican fans.

Furthermore, Miguel asked Jennifer about the connections between baseball, language, and racialized capitalism. Lastly, Miguel asked Jennifer about her chapter on Major League Baseball's development, labor structure, and practices at their academias in the Dominican Republic and Venezuela. Dr. Rudolph summarized the system and explained how they resemble the history of US imperialism and colonialism in Latin America.

To end the podcast, Miguel gives you his Molotov MVP for episode 30, the legendary Pittsburgh Pirate and Hall of Famer, Roberto Clemente. Tragically, Roberto Clemente passed away in a plane crash 49 years ago today, on New Years' Eve 1972, while providing h

Dan Collins and Joey Gelmn start the show by talking about MLB's likely decision to return to 2019-style baseball with no universal DH and regular playoff format, and break down how it affects the Cubs, Sox, and the rest of the MLB (1:33- 15:02).
