Episode 178: 'Rubikon' (2022)/'Let the Corpses Tan' (2017)

This week we decided to go with a straightforward episode. We have a little bit of movie news and we talk about two movies. And we finally make a decision about our long running giveaway. In just two weeks, we will announce the winner of original horror art, a t-shirt from Public House 28 Brewery, and a number of horror movies.

We know we just spoke about Tom Cruise a few weeks back and yes, that conversation went on for longer than it needed to. But how could we ignore that Top Gun: Maverick just made over $1 billion? We also talk about the star quality of Cruise and how there is no modern comparison.

We love madcap whounits. We  drove a quote from Knives Out into the ground and dreamed of making a stage production of 1985's Clue. Recent years have seen a return of these types of movies and we talk about the trailer from the latest. See How They Run has a cast that includes Saoirse Ronan, Adrian Brody, and Sam Rockwell in a murder mystery set around a  West End play.

Rubikon starts off like many other science fiction movies. It is set in the future, pollution has covered the globe, and corporation run everything. It also looks great. Few indie sci-fi movies look near as good as it. What drives the film are its characters and the story. We talk about a pretty straightforward film that still manages to be confusing.

Early on, it seems like Let the Corpses Tan is content to concentrate on an amazing title and its stylish look. Part Weird West, part heist movie, part WTF, the film will not be for everyone. It is easily one of the most memorable things we have seen this year, and not always for the best reason. We the meaning of nude women covered in gold, a day long violent shootout, and how to make people care for characters that are only given a little bit of time.

Rebeca Huntt on 'Frances Ha' & Titular Characters

Rebeca Huntt on 'Frances Ha' & Titular Characters

Rebeca Huntt’s debut feature is a personal documentary that, even through its specificity, tells a story that is familiar to many but rarely depicted on screen. So it follows that when she thought hard about what character made her feel seen, no one character jumped out. But the ones that she named – Frances Ha, Poetic Justice, Lady Bird, Matilda – had something special in common with one another, and with Beba. Plus, Rebeca and Jordan bond over a childhood of watching movies as a family activity (regardless of the MPAA rating!).

Then, we keep the Greta Gerwig love rolling with one quick thing about her new BARBIE.

16: The Lindsay Lohan Cinematic Universe

127 Hours with A Film Kid: In honor of the Golden Globes, Brooke tells Lindsey some of her favorite moments of Golden Globes past including (and mostly) the many drunken shenanigans.

Lady Bird: We reminisce on suburban entertainment, debate the height of Jesus, and both love and hate the existence of Kyle. Plus, Lindsey reveals her theory of the A24 Birthday Meter.

Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen: Lindsey and Brooke are surprised at the world’s best high school musical, far surpassing the likes of Troy and Gabriella. Brooke proves her ignorance about all things “frunks”, and we vow justice for Megan Fox.

    Lady Bird — Kyle Turner

    Lady Bird — Kyle Turner

As much as it is a coming-of-age story, Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird is also about the complicated relationship between a teenage daughter and her mother. Even as they argue, they want to connect; to be seen and understood as a complex and ever-evolving person by the other. Their on-screen dynamic resonated with writer Kyle Turner, who has had his own challenging relationship with his mother. He says Lady Bird helped him begin to develop compassion for her — and to explore the possibilities of expressing empathy.

Kyle Turner — is a queer freelance writer based in Brooklyn, NY. He is a contributor to Paste Magazine, and his writing has been featured in The Village Voice, GQ, Slate, NPR, and the New York Times.

Lola, Hanna & Lucy (Run Lola Run, Hanna, Lucy)

Nicole must have gotten really tired of all of the horror in October. She decided on a trio of female-led action movies for this episode. We have Franka Potente as Lola, running. Always running. And somehow managing to "reset" certain undesirable results, in Run Lola Run (1998). Saoirse Ronan as Hanna (2011), trying to figure out how to be a "normal" child, after living life in seclusion, training to become the perfect assassin. And then from there, we have Scarlett Johansson as Lucy (2014), who after being inadvertently drugged, begins to see her brain capacity increase exponentially.

Wes Anderson, Kapitel 3 - Robert Ludl

Wes Anderson, Kapitel 3 - Robert Ludl
Schlussroller -> Top 3 Interiordesign Filme
