Profit First by Mike Michalowicz - Book Club Pick

    About Profit First

Serial entrepreneur Mike Michalowicz has developed a behavioral approach to accounting to flip the formula: Sales - Profit = Expenses. Michalowicz shows that by taking profit first and apportioning only what remains for expenses, entrepreneurs will transform their businesses from cash-eating monsters to profitable cash cows. (Source: Amazon)

    Sarah’s Favorite Quotes

“Growth is the battle cry of nearly every entrepreneur and business leader. Grow! Grow! Grow!… Growth is only half the equation… Most business owners try to grow their way out of their problems...but the result is simply a bigger monster.”

“Profit is not an event. Profit is not something that happened at the year end or at the end of your five-year plan or Sunday. Profit isn’t something that waits until tomorrow. Profit must happen now and always. Profit must be baked into your business. Every day, every transaction, every moment. Profit is not an event. Profit is a habit.”

“Give yourself more joy when you choose not to spend money than do you do when you choose to spend it...Celebrate every time you save – whether it’s 10 bucks or 10,000.”

    Shaunae’s Favorite Quotes

"Money problems happen when: sales slow down, sales speed up (expenses go up too)"

"Bigger is NOT Always Better: more revenue does not mean you are more successful"

"Growth is only half the equation, Let the right size business find YOU!"

“Profit must happen now and always, profit is not an event, it’s a habit.”

“Revenue is vanity, profit is sanity, and cash is king”

Strategic Video Marketing with Marvin Flavien

Strategic Video Marketing with Marvin Flavien

It's 2020 and video marketing is here to stay, but often under utilized! We had the opportunity to sit down with video marketing strategist, Marvin Flavien to talk about how to best use video within our businesses to take advantage of the powerful tool. And don't worry, he talks about getting past the feeling of discomfort in front of the camera too!

    Video is powerful

Video is a powerful way to bring people into your business – to see it and to get a feel for what it is like to work with you before they even experience it themselves. It takes people on a journey of your business and how you would work with them. "There is a difference between knowing how to make a video and knowing how to get video to work for you. Once you decipher those two businesses can see how to get power in these video."

Build a relationship with the camera

"When you are more of yourself on camera you seem more confident. The only way to get better is to keep doing it." Marvin suggests Instagram Stories as a great way to get started with video. But remember, it’s not about us. it’s about the people on the other side. How do you want to connect with them? What value do you want to bring them?

Figure out what the goal is

Number one thing: figure out what the goal is and how we want video to work for us. Too often people forget about the strategy behind a video. But without strategy we are simply left with a pretty video that won't do much of anything.

Videos that can impact your business

    • Video email signature
    • Video business card
    • Introduction video
    • Answer frequently asked questions
    • Videos that allow you to share commonly repeated information

    About Marvin Flavien:

Marvin is a speaker, creative, video business owner, full of passion, love life and people I work with. He focuses on strategic video assets to make businesses unstoppable

Leaping from Creative to Creative Educator with Laylee Emadi

Leaping from Creative to Creative Educator with Laylee Emadi

    About Laylee Emadi

Laylee is an educator, podcast host, and photographer with a heart for serving clients and fellow creatives. She believes in serving the creative industry with heartfelt encouragement, honest advice, and a shared pursuit of the ever-elusive “balance.” Laylee is passionate about her goal to help you feel confident in your ability to make a difference, create impact, and to build a life doing what you love.

When Is It the Right Time to Offer Education

First ask yourself, “Why are you pursuing education?” If the only answer is, “Well it feels like the next step,” then education actually might not be for you. Becoming an educator takes a lot of selfless work and only when you truly want to help others should you enter this field. If you do want to serve others and are feeling successful and profitable in your business or are a super talented craftsman and want to share your talent - the “when” is whenever you feel ready to take it on. The “why” behind education is the important question to ask.

    The Different Types of Education

    • One-on-One
    • Small Group
    • Mastermind
    • Public Speaking
    • Online Education & Courses

    What Makes a Good Educator

Wanting to spread your knowledge and share your expertise is great, but it’s important to make sure you are an actual expert in your field. Ask others if your content has actually helped them, always ask for feedback. Another good way to know is if people are asking you for help. Do they want to know how you do something? This is a great indicator that others want to actually learn from you. Put out free content first and gauge people’s interest, see if they want to continue learning from you.

    Learning How to Say "No"

    Learning How to Say "No"

    Saying “No” is a Gift

The word “No” can feel like such a negative. We don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings by turning something down. But we find that when we say yes to every single thing that is asked of us, we can run ourselves too thin. We can face burnout or become resentful. By saying no to something, it allows you to say yes to things that matter and are important to you. Saying no doesn’t make you a bad person, it doesn’t mean you're spiteful or mean. It just means you have your priorities in place, you know your limits, and you can handle the workload in front of you.

Setting Appropriate Boundaries for your Business

It’s difficult to say no when it comes to business. You want to seize every opportunity and make every connection possible. But saying no is about balance. Determine your schedule, your pricing, your time commitments - EVERYTHING before you start taking on more work or saying yes to other things. Maybe people are asking for favors or additional help, first check in with yourself and your business. Really ask yourself if you have the time and energy to fully give yourself over to that request. If not, then it’s absolutely okay to say, “No, thanks.”

10 Ways to Say “No” and Still Be Kind

    • With a compliment: “This sounds like a great opportunity but I have to pass.”
    • Share your reason: “Thank you but I actually won’t have time for this.”
    • Be brief but not rude: “Thanks, but I can’t.”
    • Leave room for a “Yes” in the future: “I would love to but at this time I cannot. Please keep my name in mind for the future.”
    • No, but: “I may not be able to help you, but let me refer you to my friend.”
    • Ask later: “I’m not taking on new projects until June, can you please reach out to me then?”
    • You’re booked: “Thanks for thinking of me but my schedule is full.”
    • Not compatible: “Thank you so much but I actually don’t think we’d be a great fit.”
    • Giving thanks: “Thank you, I’m so grateful you thought of me but I cannot help you at this time.”
    • Just No: “Thanks but I’m good.”

Designing Your Client Experience (CX Design)

Designing Your Client Experience (CX Design)

Thinking About Client Experience and Your Business

Client experience is important for your business but it can sometimes get overlooked when trying to work on your business. A great way to check in on your client experience is to imagine yourself as a client or customer. Think about businesses and brands that you enjoy. What is it about those businesses that draw you in? What are they doing differently from other businesses? How do they make you feel? When you put yourself in the perspective of the client, you can start to determine new ways to make your customers feel more heard, respected, and appreciated.

Steps for Creating a Customer Experience

Your client experience will grow and develop over time. The best way to start implementing changes in your customer experience or to recognize where you need to add more is to map all your interactions with a client or customer. Map out the entire process from when they find you to when they hire you to when your finished product or service is complete. Once it’s mapped out, go into each touch-point with your client and find how you can add value to that interaction. Set expectations for your clients and follow through every time. Find ways to go above and beyond for them.

Balancing Business and Marriage as a Creative Entrepreneur with guest Matt Haberkamp

Balancing Business and Marriage as a Creative Entrepreneur with guest Matt Haberkamp

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to actually be married to a creative business owner? Or maybe you are creative and you’re trying to explain to your spouse what you’re going through? In this episode, Shaunae’s husband, Matt, is here to share all about it. He is openly and honestly sharing what it is like being married to a creative entrepreneur and how they balance marriage and business.

    Explaining Entrepreneurship to Your Partner

Whether you are in a relationship and beginning a small business or you are already a small business owner and looking to start a relationship, being open and honest about your job and your commitments is essential for getting everyone on the same page. For Shaunae as a wedding photographer, her weekends were always booked with weddings and photo shoots. Being honest with Matt about her schedule allowed them to navigate other ways to see each other and build a relationship based on each other’s needs. They had to make the intentional choice to make time for each other and built their relationship on intentionality.

    Finding Support in Entrepreneurship

Discussing business ideas and opportunities can sometimes be challenging when you have to check in with your partner. Maybe you are ready to take a new leap in your business but your partner isn’t a 100% behind you on that venture. Take time to talk about the pros and cons with business decisions. Be honest about why you are doing something and think about what you could bring in or give up by taking on something new. If your partner isn’t an entrepreneur, there will definitely be a transitional time of them learning more about what it’s like to own a business. Be patient and explain what it’s like for you. Together you will find a balance of how to support one another.

Setting Up Boundaries in Your Business

Setting up boundaries can take time and can change when your business or life changes. Choose days that are important to you and your partner that you will put work aside for. Birthdays, holidays, anniversaries - whatever is important to you, put business on the back burner for that day (if you can.) If you are working from home, let your partner know your “work hours” so they know just because you’re home, doesn’t mean you’re available. When you communicate your real boundaries to each other, you make it very clear what is okay and not okay.

    About Matt’s Professional Career

Matt has been a creative his entire life. He grew up in Iowa and attended Iowa State University for Graphic Design. After graduation, he took an internship with the Green Bay Packers in 2015. Upon completing his internship, they offered him a position as Digital UX Coordinator. For five years, he held that position and worked for the digital team, helping build and advance projects. In March of 2020, he officially accepted a new position as Digital Platforms Manager with the Seattle Seahawks.

Creative Calling by Chase Jarvis - Book Club Pick

Creative Calling by Chase Jarvis - Book Club Pick

    About Creative Calling

In this book, author Chase Jarvis, the founder of CreativeLive, shows why creativity is the new mindfulness and as important to our health as meditation, exercise, and nutrition. It's also available to everyone-beginners and lifelong creators, entrepreneurs and corporate executives.

Jarvis illustrates the critical elements for making creative expression the path to fulfillment with his memorable “IDEA” system to imagine your big dream, design daily practices that support it, execute on your ambitions plans and make your vision real and amplify your impact through community

The good news, according to Jarvis, is that creativity isn't a skill-it's a habit. It's a force inside every person that wants to be set free and-if harnessed and put to work-can transform our lives and bring vitality to everything we do.

    1. You are creative by nature, endowed with a near limitless capacity to make and grow new things.
    2. Accessing this capacity requires a kind of creative muscle that must be strengthened to achieve your full potential.
    3. By identifying as a creative person, accepting the world around you as your canvas, and manifesting your ideas regularly, you will intuitively create the life you truly want for yourself.

    Favorite Quotes:

“Some people say fake it till you make it. Forget that. Make it till you make it. Creators create. It doesn’t matter who you know, what schools you attended, which parties you’re invited to, or what you’re wearing. Creators create. Action is identity. You become what you do. You don’t need permission…

“You’ve got to do the verb to be the noun.”

“There is nothing noble, edgy, or cool about being a starving artist.”

“Be the hero of your own life. Walk your own path. When obstacles arise, go over, under, or around them. When you lose your way, listen for the call. Your heart will always lead you.”

“Your life has two big arcs. The first is about acquisition, acquiring knowledge about yourself and the world - figuring out how to meet your own needs… The second is about contribution. You start thinking about how you can serve others and make a lasting impression on the world. We take, and then we give.”

“ You are a creative person. The world is abundant and full of possibilities. Your situation can always be changed. You can use your creativity to create the change you seek. Creativity is natural and healthy but requires practice. Creativity is ultimate personal power.”

“Don’t think about making art,” he said. “Just get it done. Let everyone else decide if it’s good or bad, whether they love it or hate it. While they are deciding, make even more art.”

"Creativity is generous, life-changing, mind-altering, and practical as hell. In fact, it's only creating in small ways every day that we come to understand that we can create big changes in our lives when we desire or need them most."

"Life gets so much easier once you decide to play your own game. Don't just try to be better. Be different."

"There is no reason ti hide. Be bold. Take smart risks. Embrace failure like an old friend. People respect a wrong move made with confidence far more than a correct one made without conviction."

    Tuning Into Your Body

    Tuning Into Your Body

Feeling stressed? Tired? Foggy? Your body is telling you it needs help. When our body isn’t functioning properly, this can affect our mental health and our business too! Instead of just “powering through,” we need to address what’s going on in our bodies. In today’s episode, we are discussing tuning into your body - how it’s feeling and functioning, what it needs, and ways you can give back to it.

    Our Favorite Skincare Treat

Your skin will let you know if you are feeling stressed or not well. Certain foods or lack of water can make it go crazy too. That’s why giving it love with face masks and rollers is so helpful. We absolutely LOVE our rose quartz facial rollers. These rollers are the perfect way to treat yourself. Not only are they great for your skin, they improve blood circulation in your face, help with sinuses, decreases puffiness, and soothes your skin. Keep your roller stored in a fridge - a cool roller tightens your pores and wakes up your face at the end of a long day.

    Shaunae’s Experience with Whole30

Food plays a huge role in our bodies. It can be used to fuel us and give us all the wonderful energy we need. Shaunae wanted to see how food could affect how she felt so her and her husband tried Whole30. Whole30 emphasizes whole foods and eliminates sugar, alcohol, grains, legumes, soy, and dairy. Though it did have it’s tough moments, it was eye-opening to see how you can really give love to your body with whole foods. They feel SO much lighter, healthier, and happier. There are so many benefits like sleeping restfully and having plenty of productive energy. But Shaunae’s favorite result has to be the way she looks at food now. She had to read the ingredients in everything. This program really made them THINK about what you actually put in your body.

Additional Tips to Tune into Your Body

Going to a chiropractor at least once a week can improve your health and wellness. Some of the benefits of chiropractic care include pain relief, improved energy levels, decreased inflammation, increased mobility, better immune function, and regulated hormone function.

Acupuncture is another great way. It is an alternative therapy that involves inserting thin needles into targeted areas of the body that help you in so many ways.

Reiki is also a great way to not only help your body, but help your energy too. Reiki is a healing technique where a therapist can channel energy into the patient by means of touch, to activate the natural healing processes of the patient’s body.

Meditation is a beautiful way to check in with yourself. Meditating allows you to free your mind from all the thoughts and stresses of the day and just focus on one thing. It can help you relax, sleep better, and stay focused for your day ahead.

Getting Started with Email Marketing with Nicole Bergeson

Getting Started with Email Marketing with Nicole Bergeson

Our friend and fellow creative entrepreneur, Nicole Bergeson, joins us on today’s episode to cover all things email marketing. From building your list (even if it’s at zero), how often you should be sending emails, and learning exactly what a welcome sequence is - Nicole covers all of that and MORE! As Nicole says, “Don’t take email marketing too seriously. It doesn’t have to be scary. It’s just another avenue of your marketing and it can create a great community of people.”

    About Nicole

Meet Nicole! Owner of Nicole Bergeson Strategy and she helps creatives make sense of digital marketing while empowering them to embrace their uniqueness, share their knowledge, and become more intentional online in order to make more sales. She’s also an illustrator, small business cheerleader, wife, boy-mom, enneagram type 7, and year-round iced coffee drinker.

What is the Purpose of Email Marketing?

Nicole explains that email is the “billboard of digital marketing.” Email can be targeted to an ideal audience. It’s an effective way to create community, share who you are, and make sales. Statistics show that 80% of marketers still claim that email is best for keeping customers. 60% of consumers say that email is their preferred way to get promotions.

How Do You Grow Your Email List?

Legally, people have to opt-in to your email list, you cannot just add them. Before you grow your list, step back and acknowledge who your audience is. We have to be invited into the inboxes of our subscribers so make sure you are giving them valuable content. Creating free helpful, inspirational, or educational lead magnets allows your potential audience to receive something before they even opt-in for your email list.

What Does An Email Welcome Sequence Look?

A welcome sequence is a way to let your subscribers know what to expect once they’ve signed up for your newsletter. It’s a window into more about you and your business. Nicole recommends everyone have at least one email in their welcome sequence but you can have up to 4-6 emails. She recommends four things in every welcome sequence: a welcome, information about yourself, what to expect, and a personal story.

    Getting Comfortable with the Uncomfortable

    Getting Comfortable with the Uncomfortable

Whether by choice or my circumstance, we are faced with uncomfortable situations often. They can feel risky, anxious-ridden, and sometimes scary. It could be a choice you made, a leap of faith into a new adventure. Or it could be something completely out of your control, like losing your job or changes in your health. No matter the situation though, there is always beauty and growth that comes from uncomfortableness. It’s time to embrace it!

Shaunae Begins the Episode with a Quote from Her Blog

“If I never went through that uncomfortable feeling of inadequacy, I never would have realized how important it was for me to overcome it. I’ve had other tragedies, hardships, and transitions in my life that have felt SO uncomfortable that I just wanted to jump out of my skin! But you have to go on! We have to go through those icky, uncomfortable moments in life to reach our higher destiny. To grow stronger and help others. To learn something new about ourselves. To dig deeper into the core of who we are. You’ll never learn anything if life is easy. You’ll never grow. It may not be fun but I promise you, that uncomfortable feeling is only temporary. I became comfortable with feeling uncomfortable and I hope you do the same. Feeling uncomfortable is a good thing! It strengthens us and helps us change into the people we are meant to be.”

Shaunae’s Real Life Examples of Feeling Uncomfortable

Growing up, she was painfully shy. Her aunt guided her in this journey and told her to lift her head up and walk with confidence, to engage with others. It was difficult during that time but with every new interaction, it became easier and helped Shaunae to be the outgoing, friendly person she is today. But it all started from a very uncomfortable beginning. She also graduated high school at only 17, moved across the country to attend college, and felt absolutely homesick. She powered through and is so grateful that she did because it led her to start her photography business once she graduated.

Sarah’s Real Life Examples of Feeling Uncomfortable

Getting up in front of classes to speak always scared Sarah. Even early in her career, this fear stayed with her. Her boss recognized her fear and helped her improve with a group called Toastmasters. It helped her become aware of what she was doing, how she was speaking, and helped her realize that nothing bad is going to happen when she is speaking in front of people.

    Getting Uncomfortable in Business

“No risk, no reward.” Taking leaps in your business - going full time, hiring staff members, etc - can be a scary, uncomfortable thing. Even if you have a plan in place, it’s okay to feel scared in the moment. But don’t let that stop you. Push through and keep going until you make it out on the other side. Shaunae shares the quote she says all the time at her home, “Do it afraid.” Fear is okay, use it to benefit you, instead of control you.

The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck by Mark Manson - April Book Club

The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck by Mark Manson - April Book Club

    About This Month’s Book
For decades, we’ve been told that positive thinking is the key to a happy, rich life. "Fck positivity," Mark Manson says. "Let’s be honest, shit is fcked and we have to live with it." In his wildly popular Internet blog, Manson doesn’t sugarcoat or equivocate. He tells it like it is—a dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck is his antidote to the coddling, let’s-all-feel-good mindset that has infected modern society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up.
Manson makes the argument, backed both by academic research and well-timed poop jokes, that improving our lives hinges not on our ability to turn lemons into lemonade, but on learning to stomach lemons better. Human beings are flawed and limited—"not everybody can be extraordinary, there are winners and losers in society, and some of it is not fair or your fault." Manson advises us to get to know our limitations and accept them. Once we embrace our fears, faults, and uncertainties, once we stop running and avoiding and start confronting painful truths, we can begin to find the courage, perseverance, honesty, responsibility, curiosity, and forgiveness we seek. Source

    About Mark Manson
Mark is an author, blogger, entrepreneur, and personal development consultant. Mark grew up in Austin, Texas, graduated from Boston University in 2007, and a couple years later, started an online business and blog. Over the next few years, he traveled all over the world, working as a blogger full-time. He now lives in New York City with his wife and continues to help people through his blog and his books.

    Sarah’s Takeaway
I had major Gary Vaynerchuck and Grant Cardone vibes while reading this book. Manson is very straight forward and to the point about the ideas he presents in his book. But he also shares relatable examples to help you understand. After you get past the first chapter that is filled with a few more f-words, you will find an immense amount of gold within the pages of this book to help you find what it means to not put your energy into caring about what doesn't matter so you can give it to what is most important to you.

    Shaunae’s Takeaway
I was a little worried this book would be all swear words and fluff, but I was so wrong. This book is full of great content. Mark shares that it’s not about being indifferent, it’s about putting value on the right things. Mark shares his thoughts and humor in the best possible way. My favorite part of the book is when he gets into five counterintuitive values that we should adopt. Values like taking responsibility for our actions, the willingness to discover our own flaws, contemplating our own mortality, and more.

    Favorite Quotes:
“Because here’s another sneaky little truth about life. You can’t be an important and life-changing presence for some people without also being a joke and an embarrassment to others.”

“We suffer for the simple reason that suffering is biologically useful. It is nature’s preferred agent for inspiring change.”

“Don’t hope for a life without problems. There’s no such thing. Instead, hope for a life full of good problems.”

“Because happiness requires struggle. It grows from problems. Joy doesn’t just sprout out of the ground like daisies and rainbows. Real, serious, lifelong fulfillment and meaning have to be earned through the choosing and managing of our struggles.”

"Negative emotions are a call to action. When you feel them, it’s because you’re supposed to do something. Positive emotions, on the other hand , are rewards for taking positive action. When you feel them, life seems simple and there is nothing else to do but enjoy it. Then, like everything else, the positive emotions go away, because more problems inevitably emerge."

“If you want to change how you see your problems, you have to change what you value and/or how you measure failure/success.”

"The only difference between a problem being painful of being powerful is a sense that we chose it, and that we are responsible for it."

“Don’t just sit there. Do something. The answers will follow.”

"Action isn’t just the effect of motivation; it’s also the cause of it."

“Confronting the reality of our own mortality is important because it obliterates all the crappy, fragile, superficial values in life. While most people whittle their days chasing another buck, or a little bit more fame and attention, or a little bit more assurance that they’re right or loved, death confronts all of us with a far more painful and important question: What is your legacy?”

Faith Not Fear with Myles Berrio

Faith Not Fear with Myles Berrio

Building a new business can be scary. Starting a new journey in your life can seem overwhelming. But when you choose to live by faith and not fear, the world opens up to you. Of course, there will still be challenges and obstacles to overcome but you will be better equipped to handle it. In today’s episode, we are joined by Myles Berrio - a wedding and commercial photographer, serial entrepreneur, and author. Without a traditional business background, Myles showed up every day and put in the work to create and run multiple businesses. He credits choosing faith over fear to his success in business and in life.

    About Myles Berrio
Myles is a 26-year-old wedding and commercial photographer living in Atlanta, GA. His life entails traveling all over the US and the world capturing the love stories of all types of couples while also being blessed to work with some of the largest, most well known companies such as Target, Netflix, Uber Eats, WeWork, and Revolve. As much as he would like to be called a photographer, at heart he really is an entrepreneur. Aside from photography he also enjoys his other businesses in consulting, e-commerce, and the food industry. He is a published author working on his second book. To sum it all up, most people will say he’s usually the happiest guy in the room.

To Build Your Business and Your Life in Faith and Not Fear
You end up creating what it is that you’re afraid of when you live your life through fear. Opportunities and doors start opening when you live your life by faith. When you live through faith, it doesn’t mean it will always be easy but it will always work out for you. When you go into business, your business might fail for a certain amount of time but that doesn’t always mean it will fail forever. If you are willing to trust, learn what you don’t know, and put in the work, you can make any business successful.

Practical Tips to Live in Faith Over Fear
Start with what you have and where you are. You can begin by building a habit of taking opportunities and strengthening your faith. Commit to saying “yes” to new things that you really want to do. It’s important to not let your excuses rule your life. Recognize when excuses pop up and figure out your best way to overcome them. Know who you are and determine what motivates you the most, that will push you towards your destiny. If there are beliefs you have today that are impairing your ability to move in the direction of where you want to go in life, then you can let go of those beliefs and accept new beliefs.

How to Say “No” to Fear When It Creeps Back In
Fear will never leave you completely. Even the most successful people in business still deal with fear and imposter syndrome. When the fear creeps back in, it’s important to remember what keeps you going. Your why in business. Remember why you wanted to start this business in the first place. You need to choose a why that’s bigger than yourself that will challenge you even when fear comes back. Fear will have no power over you.

    Social Media Dependency

    Social Media Dependency

A few weeks ago, we all experienced a little taste of what would happen if social media just went away. Facebook and Instagram were down for a day which left some people unsure of what to do without it. Even though it wasn’t working, we all still reached for our phones, thinking we could check in or post something. During that day, some of us took the time to read a book or get other work done, embracing a “social-media free” day. But it got us thinking, have we become too dependent on social media? In today’s episode, we dive into this topic and share our honest opinions.

    Social Media is a Tool
Don’t get us wrong, we ADORE social media. It’s a great way to stay connected with others and to share what is going on in your life. It’s also an AMAZING resource for your business. But social media is a tool, it should not consume your entire life. It’s easy to become distracted by it but it can start being dangerous if you think you should live your life a certain way based on what you see online. If you see the people you follow online and think they have the “perfect life” and you don’t, it’s normal to get discouraged. It’s important to not use social media as a mirror for your own life. You need to do what’s best for yourself and not feel like you have to do what everyone else is doing. You are special and unique and your story deserves to be told.

    Learning to be Present Again
There is a time and place for everything, including social media. Have you ever gone out to dinner with your friends to share great conversations and catch up with each other and instead you both spend more time on your phones? Don’t get me wrong, we all love documenting the moments, our experiences, and our travels, but then it’s time to put the phone away and actually be present with the people we’re with. It’s okay to share with your friends that you want a photo of your night out together but you don’t have to post it right away. No one cares if it’s posted right at that very second. Just be honest and open with your friends and set aside time for your social media so it’s not taking up the entire evening. When you’re actually in the moment, you’ll have way more fun.

Your Business Should Survive Without Social Media
Would your business survive if social media went away? The answer is probably no and it’s a good thing that you know that now. Of course, social media isn’t going anywhere but it’s important to find other ways to promote your business. Try starting an email newsletter or a blog. Both those types of platforms you can control and you are not sharing on someone else’s platform. Find ways that your business can thrive, even if social media disappears.

    Sarah’s Takeaway:
I am in awe of Christy's ability in story telling and how she uses her own background as the daughter of an entreprenuer and her own passion for helping women to share the steps to laying down a foundation to succeed as a business owner. She easily defines the steps and actions to take, and is a cheerleader for you as you go thorough the pages of the book. Probably most beneficial, she lets you know you are NOT alone and your voice and approach matters.

    Shaunae’s Takeaway:
I absolutely adore Christy and her passion for helping women succeed in their businesses! This book is a great source to get your business started, the correct way. She talks about building a business in four tiers, like a wedding cake (because her mom is a baker.) She works through the foundation (the base) and moves her way up. I love that she gives action steps at the end of each chapter so you can apply what you’re learning to your own business. This book is definitely a must-read for anyone who is starting their business!

    Favorite Quotes:
“You were made for more than just getting by; fulfillment is waiting for you in work that you love. You’re not a supporting character in the movie of your life; you’re the lead role. You have permission, the responsibility even, to be in the driver’s seat of your own life. That includes investing in things that bring you joy and make you proud. You have permission to do things that make you like yourself. It’s not selfish; it’s self-preservation, and it’s smart.”

“You don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great.”

“Stop anticipating the sacrifice and start anticipating the reward”

“We undervalue our strengths because they may seem easy and obvious to us.”

“The prettiest ads don’t win the campaign. The best research wins the campaign.” lessons about marketing

“A brand is no longer what we tell the customer it is - it is what the customers tell each other it is.”

“Because here is the reality: It’s your responsibility to make yourself feel good. It’s your responsibility to make yourself happy, confident, and proud. It’s your responsibility to make yourself a person that your family wants to be around, a woman that your husband wants to take on a date, a mom that your kids want to play with, and a friend that people want to hang out with. No one can do that for you.”

    Becoming a Digital Nomad

    Becoming a Digital Nomad

We both absolutely love having opportunities to travel and explore. Have you ever considered what it would look like to pack up your life and your business and travel the world while working? This has been something that has been on Sarah's heart for awhile now and she is finally taking the leap to make it a reality (at least for four months). Don't worry, we aren't going anywhere - our podcast is just becoming international!

    How is Sarah Doing This?
While you certainly can work and travel at your own leisure, working in coffee shops and staying in hostels or Airbnbs what really made this possible was hearing about a program called Remote Year. This program offers both 4 month and 12 month itineraries, where those who are able to work or run their own business from anywhere can join to experience and live in a new country each month.

A Bit More About Remote Year
Remote Year is not a company that pays you to work for them. You do need to have your own job while you are on the trip to pay for the program. The benefits of a program like Remote Year really is peace of mind that your housing, a place to work with reliable internet and travel between locations each month are covered. You also are traveling with people who you will get to know and have resources and questions answered from Remote Year employees that live in each country. Remote Year also offers additional program to explore and experience life in each country you visit.

Preparing for Becoming a Digital Nomad
Your life will literally be in a suitcase, or two! Traveling for extended periods of time while working is best done when traveling light. Consider a capsule wardrobe that you can have the variety you desire, and layers will be your friend in cooler weather. Compression bags and travel cubes are also very helpful for packing within your suitcases. But you definately will not want to carry around to much, so really think about the essentials for your business and what you absolutely need to take with you versus what you can buy along the way.

Of course packing is only one thing to consider. You will also want to figure out how you are contacting your clients. If you make a lot of calls or send texts you will want a phone plan that is not going to end up costing you an insanely high amount. You will also most likely be using a credit card as you travel to pay for your expenses, but some cards will charge high international fees. Research a card that will work for you well and not have a fee when abroad.

A Few Other Things to Consider:

    • Do you need a visa?
    • Should you purchase travel insurance?
    • What shots or other medical supplies will you need? Other countries will expose you to different health risks if you are spending a longer time there.
