    Bordeaux's White Bank

    Bordeaux's White Bank

Did you know Bordeaux used to be mainly white, not red wine? And that there's a universe of delicious diversity (and great value) to be discovered among the dry and sweet whites of Bordeaux (not forgetting the fizz)?

This is the second part in our mini-series in association with the Bordeaux Wine Council (CIVB) and we dive headlong into the fascinating world of white Bordeaux. We talk to the brilliant Laure de Lambert Compeyrot of Chateau Sigalas Rabaud as well as 'renegade' winemaker Olivier Cazenave of Chateau de Bel. Bordeaux expert Jane Anson also makes a cameo appearance.

The episode also features the ULTIMATE breakfast cocktail (involving Sauternes and blood orange), masochism, robots, 'heavy metal' orange wine, the 2021 vintage, earthworms the size of snakes, rescuing Muscadelle, loving 'the game' and some amazing value wine tips. By way of bonus, both Susie and Peter break into what might be loosely described as 'song' at different moments.

As ever, show notes for this episode are on our website.  You can catch us and say hi via Instagram or Twitter.

[33] Domaines Kilger - Sauvignon Blanc - Ried Kranachberg 2018

[33] Domaines Kilger - Sauvignon Blanc - Ried Kranachberg 2018

Sauvignon aus der Südsteiermark - but make it funky!

    New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc

    New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc

New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc is one of the wine world's most dramatic success stories. It went from zero to hero in the 1980s and 1990s, stunning the world with its uniquely extrovert character, and paving the way for an entire nation's wine fortunes to be revolutionised.

Some people are a bit snobby about Kiwi Sauvignon - too easy, too obvious, too samey, they say. But the truth is that Sauvignon can be every bit as diverse, complex, age-worthy and fine as other great white grape varieties. In this episode we take a very DEEP dive into the subject, exploring in our longest episode to date what (and where) Sauvignon is, before moving onto its story in New Zealand - from virtual unknown to spearheading a wine revolution in New Zealand and now offering a range of styles that speak of regionality, winemaking diversity and (whisper it) fun.

We chat to James Healy (formerly of Cloudy Bay and Dog Point, now ABEL in Nelson), research scientist Dr Wendy Parr, Yealands chief winemaker Natalie Christensen, and wine merchant and restaurateur Melanie Brown. We also taste our way through an array of Sauvignons, from low alcohol to blush, from classic to new wave styles, from the young to the old via the elegantly oaked. Salmon ceviche and monkfish with asparagus risotto are on our table and we talk about other dishes too.

This is a sponsored episode in partnership with New Zealand Winegrowers, who are kindly offering a prize of 6 bottles of the Sauvignons we highlight in this episode to one lucky winner. You just have to tell us what your favourite accompaniment to Sauvignon is - food, music, occasion, person, etc - by Friday 14th May 2021.

Ep 7: Sauvignon Blanc, the Wild Grape

    Look for the Helpers

    Look for the Helpers

This week, Joanna from St. Louis calls into the Tiny Victory Hotline to tell us about a tiny victory she found in the immediate aftermath of a harrowing car accident, and another caller found herself in need of help after getting stuck in the snow in Utah. This episode is a good reminder that no matter how shaken your faith in humanity might be, things might not be as dire as you think. Listen to us this week if you need reminding that there is such a thing as the kindness of strangers.

Next week’s show is inspired by the discovery of a snack bar in Pompeii, and Laura and Annabelle want to hear from listeners who might be as delighted by this news as they are. If that describes YOU…

Call the Tiny Victories Hotline: (323) 285-1675

We want folks to share their tiny victories on our hotline because, frankly, we’ll assume we’re just talking into the void every week and nothing matters. Prove us wrong. Did you finally do that thing you were putting off? Tiny victory! Reconnect with someone you haven’t been in touch with for ages? Victory! We only ask that you try to keep messages to under a minute so we’re able to play it on the show.

If you prefer, you can record a tiny victory on your phone and then email us the audio.

Talking of which, we give the DEFINITIVE verdict on the best white wine grape variety...
