Podcast 117.

Bob Campbell: 2023 Giesen Uncharted Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough $20.99

Bob Campbell: 2023 Giesen Uncharted Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough $20.99

Wine: 2023 Giesen Uncharted Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough $20.99

    Why I chose it:

    - I wanted to choose a wine that would put a smile on the face of the largest number of people as a sort of Christmas present to listeners who enjoy wine.

    - Sauvignon Blanc is our biggest selling wine both locally and overseas.

    - Giesen is a large, quality conscious producer of Sauvignon Blanc.

    - I recently tasted this wine in a blind line-up and it performed very well.

    - NZ makes the world’s best SB according to many top wine critics (We make 25% of the world’s SB).

    What does it taste like?

    - “Sweet acid” sounds like a contradiction in terms but to me it describes an important component of this wine perfectly. Gentle sauvignon with good intensity of passionfruit, guava, grapefruit flavours with a gooseberry undercurrent.

    Why it’s a bargain:

$20.99 is an average price for Sauvignon Blanc but this is a well-above average quality wine.

    Where can you buy it?

    - New World $17.99 (check the vintage, wait for 2023)

    - Glengarry Wines in Auckland (2022) $18.99

    - Vineonline $17.99

    Food match?

    - Most seafoods, great with clams/cockles

    Will it keep?

    - Drink up

Marlborough at 50: A wine story worthy of Hollywood

Marlborough at 50: A wine story worthy of Hollywood

This is a tale of deception, daring, disaster...and deliverance.

It also features skinny sheep and wine robots.

It's the story of Marlborough, the iconic New Zealand wine region which is celebrating its 50th wine birthday, after vines were planted by Frank Yukich in August 1973.

Yukich had risked personal financial ruin getting to this point. 'Wines from here will become world famous!' he declared.

Shortly after which most of the vines died from drought.

But no adventure story is without its supreme setbacks. And this story features everything from the Queen to gut-rot via shiny tractors.

On the wine front, it's sobering to think just how far Marlborough has come in 50 harvests, from a shaky start to sensational Sauvignon Blanc and much more besides. It's a region helping set the global agenda for the wine of the future - and a tribute to the imaginative, resilient Kiwi spirit.

This is a sponsored episode in collaboration with New Zealand Winegrowers. We taste and recommend the following wines from Marlborough:

    • Brancott Estate Sauvignon Blanc 2022
    • Brancott Estate Chosen Rows Sauvignon Blanc 2015
    • Hans Herzog Zweigelt 2017
    • Hans Herzog Spirit of Marlborough 2016
    • Greywacke Sauvignon Blanc 2022
    • Greywacke Wild Sauvignon 2021
    • Lawson's Dry Hills Reserve Chardonnay 2021
    • Blank Canvas Reed Chardonnay 2022
    • Villa Maria Seddon Pinot Gris 2020
    • Wairau River Pinot Noir 2021

#113 Michi Lorenz - Sauvignon Blanc Halo 2020

#113 Michi Lorenz - Sauvignon Blanc Halo 2020

Episode 25 - Blair Gillingham

    Episode 25 - Blair Gillingham

Blair Gillingham  joins me on the podcast this week. He is the winemaker at Howling Bluff Estate Winery in Naramata but has been in the wine business since he was a teenager. He's experienced a lot of vintages in many countries around the world, which he’ll be talking about. Blair is super down to earth about wine and winemaking. He was a hard-core listener to my old podcast, Wine Country BC back in the day – even remembering things about them that I’d forgotten about. He brought along a couple of tank samples to try from Howling Bluff and his own project Observatory Wines. So here you go, enjoy my chat with winemaker Blair Gillingham. Cheers!

Wine Can Be a Perfect Companion to Japanese Food

Wine Can Be a Perfect Companion to Japanese Food

Our guest is Nori Nakamura who is the owner and winemaker at Noria, a unique winery in California.

When we eat Japanese food, we almost automatically think to pair it with Japanese sake or Japanese beer.

On the other hand, Japanese sake has become so popular globally that you can find it at Michelin-starred, non-Japanese restaurants outside of Japan these days.

Nori decided to break the preconception and now is making beautiful wine that pairs perfectly with Japanese food.

In this episode, we will discuss how Nori, who used to be in the high-end hotel industry in Japan, became a winemaker, his wine-making philosophy, what types of wine go well with Japanese food, the future of Japanese food and wine pairing, and much, much more!!!

WTF is Pouilly-Fumé? (Fancy wine vs. Barefoot wine, Sauvignon Blanc from Loire, Wines named for regions rather than the grapes)

WTF is Pouilly-Fumé? (Fancy wine vs. Barefoot wine, Sauvignon Blanc from Loire, Wines named for regions rather than the grapes)

So, if you didn’t know, Pouilly-Fumé is Sauvignon Blanc, but from a specific area of France in the Loire Valley. Like a lot of European wines, the names can be confusing because they are named after the place they are from, not the grape they are made from. But the real question is - can you tell the difference between a Sauvignon Blanc from Pouilly-Fumé, which is going to be a little pricey, from a much less expensive Sauvignon Blanc? If you are curious about all of this stuff, this is the episode for you! We talk about what makes Sauv Blanc from Pouilly-Fumé special, and then we taste and review two wines from Pouilly-Fumé and compare them to Barefoot Sauvignon Blanc. The results may surprise you! Wines reviewed in this episode: 2021 Domaine Francis Blanchet Pouilly Fumé Cuvée Silice, 2020 Domaine Cailbourdin Pouilly-Fumé Les Cris, and Barefoot Sauvignon Blanc.

Matching Food and Wine: 'Green Pizza'!

First up: what on earth is a GREEN PIZZA??!!

Well, it's a summer vegetable tart. But we couldn't quite bring ourselves to have that as our title. So we ran with 'green pizza'. Which it...almost is.

What it definitely is, is utterly delicious comfort food. As well as going superbly well with a whole range of wines. So our kind of dish.

It cries out for a fresh, crisp white. Particularly those made from  Sauvignon Blanc...but not exclusively. Here's what we went with:

This episode is part of our food-and-wine matching mini-series brought to you in association with Wine Club by Majestic. The wines featured are all available in Majestic.

This short-form Live episode is also available in video format so if you'd like to see us in action, check out our YouTube channel: Susie & Peter On Wine.

The recipe for our 'green pizza' is available, together with all links, photos, wines and more details from the show, on our website: Show notes for Wine Blast S4 E1 - Matching Food and Wine: 'Green Pizza'!

#45 Christoph Neumeister - Sauvignon Blanc Ried Moarfeitl 2019
