Never Alone: The 223rd Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

Never Alone: The 223rd Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

In this 223rd in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

In this episode, we discuss science and religion, materialism and other ways of understanding our world. Can analysis and quantification explain everything? Can narrative, intuition, and creativity? All are or should be part of the scientific process; science is incomplete with only one mode. We also discuss models, how they fail, how difficult they are to assess, and what one recent climate model has to say about the role of air pollution in Earth’s temperature. Enlightenment values require that we use our freedom to inquire about all things that we are curious about. Also: happy Beltane!

Why There Is So Much Bullsh*t in Science

Why There Is So Much Bullsh*t in Science
We should be living in a golden age of creativity in science and technology. We know more about the universe and ourselves than we did in any other period in history, and with easy access to superior research tools, our pace of discovery should be accelerating. But as one group of researchers from Stanford put it: “Everywhere we look we find that ideas … are getting harder to find.” Another paper found that “scientific knowledge has been in clear secular decline since the early 1970s,” and yet another concluded that “new ideas no longer fuel economic growth the way they once did.” As regular listeners of this podcast know, I am obsessed with this topic—why it seems like in industries as different as music and film and physics, new ideas are losing ground. It is harder to sell an original script, harder to make an original hit song, and harder to publish a groundbreaking paper, and while these trends are NOT all the same, they rhyme in a way I can’t stop thinking about. How did we build a world where new ideas are so endangered? This year, a new study titled “Papers and Patents Are Becoming Less Disruptive Over Time” inches us closer to an explanation for why this is happening in science. The upshot is that any given paper today is much less likely to become influential than a paper in the same field from several decades ago. Progress is slowing down, not just in one or two places, but across many domains of science and technology. Today, I speak to one of the study’s coauthors. Russell Funk is a professor at the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota. We talk about the decline of progress in science, why it matters, and why it’s happening—and we give special attention to a particular theory of mine, which is that the incentive structure of modern science encourages too much research that doesn’t serve any purpose except to get published. In other words, science has a bullsh*t paper problem. And because science is the wellspring from which all progress flows, its crap problem is our problem. #139 Science Surrenders (Bret Weinstein & Heather Heying DarkHorse Livestream)

In this 139th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we discuss the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

This week, we discuss whether reality is going to be tolerated—by internet randos, by magazines supposedly devoted to disseminating scientific findings to an interested public, and by actual scientific journals. A new editorial in Nature Human Behavior is breath-taking in its rejection of the scientific process and values, and, therefore, of reality. Then: what anti-scientific buffoonery is behind not allowing unvaccinated-against-Covid Novak Dvokovic, argued by some to be the best tennis player ever, to compete in the U.S. Open? And: what is the New York Times up to?

#122 Retroactive Cancelation & Rights of Passage (Bret Weinstein & Heather Heying DarkHorse Livestream)

In this 122nd in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we discuss the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

This week, we discuss cancellation for being woke, and for being medically woke. We discuss vitamin D, latitude, altitude, health and allergies.  We talk about teaching children how to think, not what to think, and about Margaret Mead’s retroactive cancellation. We discuss coming of age in Samoa, New Jersey, among the Amish, and in the era of Covid. We talk about what the Amish do and do not engage in, and whether everyone should be aiming to go to college. We discuss how many progressives have sold out our values in the last two years—and before—and risked reversing decades of actual progress. We talk about Nuremberg, and vaccine mandates, and a GenX revolution.
