Never Alone: The 223rd Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

    en-usMay 04, 2024

    Podcast Summary

    • Discovering the Significance of Prime Number 223 and Traveling with SonTraveling and experiencing history firsthand broadens perspectives and reveals new insights, even at historical sites that may not be actively used for centuries.

During the Dark Horse podcast livestream number 223, Dr. Brett Weinstein discussed the significance of the prime number 223 and the recent lack of prime numbers in their episodes. He also shared his recent travel experience with his adult son Zach to Europe, where they visited historical sites in England, and Zach's first-time experience of European culture. Weinstein emphasized the importance of seeing the world through new perspectives and experiencing history firsthand. Despite the abundance of historical sites in Europe, he acknowledged that many places were not actively using the same things for centuries and were instead part of prehistoric material culture. The trip was a remarkable revelation for Zach, who had not spent much time outside North America. Overall, the episode highlighted the value of travel and experiencing history in person.

    • The power of memory and chance encountersRecognizing a chance encounter can lead to unexpected friendships and fascinating experiences, highlighting the importance of personal memory and shared historical sites.

Our personal memories and historical events can intertwine in unexpected ways, creating unique and fascinating experiences. This was exemplified by a chance encounter with Douglas Murray being interviewed outside the Houses of Parliament, which led to recognizing him later and eventually becoming friends. This experience highlights the power of memory and the connections we can make through seemingly random encounters and shared historical sites. Additionally, the conversation touched on various topics including God, angels, ghosts, natural selection, climate change, and pollution. The speakers expressed their support for their audience on Locals and mentioned upcoming Q&A sessions for local supporters. They also promoted three sponsors: MUDWTR, a company that produces a spicy, adaptogenic mushroom and Ayurvedic herb drink; The Great Courses Plus, an online learning platform; and the Epoch Times, a newspaper that covers news from a unique perspective.

    • Experience the Delights of Spring with MUDWTR, Ancient Armor, and Helix SleepDiscover MUDWTR's warming spring drink with health benefits, Ancient Armor's colostrum for immune support, and Helix Sleep's personalized mattresses for restorative sleep

Helix Sleep offers personalized mattresses based on individual preferences, ensuring excellent support for the spine. The company's quiz helps determine the perfect mattress for each customer, and it comes with a 100-night trial and a 10-15 year warranty. Helix mattresses are made in the USA, free of fiberglass, and combine steel coils and foam layers. Additionally, Helix supports certain groups with special discounts. On a different note, a fascinating psychological phenomenon called "third man syndrome" has been reported by adventurers and explorers who experienced life-threatening situations. This phenomenon involves the feeling of being accompanied by someone during such emergencies. An evolutionary explanation suggests that this sensation could have been endowed in human beings for adaptive reasons, as the presence of a companion could increase the chances of survival. This hypothesis underscores the power of Darwinian evolution to shape even our psychological processes. Helix Sleep is currently offering up to 30% off all mattress orders and 2 free pillows for our listeners. Visit helixsleep.com/darkhorse to take advantage of this limited-time offer.

    • Religious beliefs can be metaphorically true despite being literally falseThe value and power of religious beliefs lie beyond literal reality, providing comfort, hope, and shaping experiences, even if they don't align with factual truths.

The idea of religious beliefs being "literally false but metaphorically true" has significant implications. This perspective acknowledges that religious beliefs may not align with literal reality, but they can still hold immense value for those who hold them. The 3rd man phenomenon, as an example, may be an illusion, but it can provide comfort and hope during life-threatening situations. This concept challenges the notion that religious beliefs are mere mind viruses or distortions, as some argue. Instead, it suggests that natural selection can explain the existence and value of religious beliefs without dismissing the importance of consciousness or the role of belief in shaping human experiences. The use of the term "true" in this context is not meant to imply factual accuracy, but rather the value and power that comes from believing in something beyond the literal.

    • Cultural evolution and material reality coexistRespect beliefs while acknowledging material reality's importance for survival and scientific progress, and address misunderstandings in scientific theories instead of dismissing them.

While cultural evolution, represented by beliefs and hallucinations, can be more powerful and faster than genetic evolution, it doesn't mean we should disregard the materialist understanding of the world. The materialist worldview is essential for our survival and scientific progress, even if it's incomplete. We should respect people's right to their beliefs, but not let them conflict with the materialist truth. The omega principle highlights the coexistence of these two realms - the material and the supernatural or cultural. The material world provides the foundation for our survival, while beliefs and hallucinations can offer comfort and hope in dire circumstances. It's crucial to acknowledge both and avoid dismissing one as a mere fiction. The rejection of scientific theories like Darwinian evolution is a concern, as it's based on misunderstandings rather than evidence. Instead of focusing on the errors of evolutionists, we should strive to understand the true issues and work towards resolving them.

    • Science's incompleteness and the need for continued explorationScience acknowledges its limitations and the importance of synthesizing reductionist findings into a larger whole, encouraging ongoing dialogue with other belief systems.

While Darwinism and the materialist worldview have been foundational to scientific understanding, they are not a complete explanation for all aspects of existence. The scientific method, as a self-correcting process, acknowledges its incompleteness and the need for continued exploration. However, some misunderstandings have arisen when people assume that this means we need a totally different kind of explanation, rather than recognizing the interplay between reductionism and synthesis in scientific inquiry. It's important to remember that science is not just about breaking things down into their smallest parts, but also about building a comprehensive understanding by synthesizing those parts into a larger whole. The ongoing dialogue between science and other belief systems should be seen as an opportunity for growth and learning, rather than a conflict.

    • The importance of synthesis in scienceScience requires both reductionism and synthesis for progress. Synthesis involves expanding our toolkit and reflecting on what we've learned when current methods prove insufficient. Undervalued in modern science, it's crucial for philosophical growth and innovation.

Science is not just about reductionism and quantification, but also about synthesis and creativity. The work of scientists like Daukins and Darwin, who excelled in synthesis, has been undervalued because it is not as easily quantifiable or reducible to metrics and statistics. However, both reductionism and synthesis are necessary for scientific progress. Modern science has largely dismissed the synthetic part of the process, treating it as secondary and not scientific. But we have also missed the significance of the philosophical part, which involves reflecting on what we have learned and expanding our toolkit when our current methods prove insufficient. For example, Mandelbrot's discovery of the limitations of traditional math and his invention of fractal math illustrates the importance of synthesis and the need to expand our toolkit. Science is a complex process that requires both analytical and creative thinking, and we must not overlook the importance of the latter.

    • Complex systems are inherently messy and unpredictableTo understand complex systems, scientists must learn to wrestle signals from the noise and establish patterns, embracing their complexity rather than trying to eliminate it.

The rules of science that work for simple systems may not apply to complex systems, such as those found in biology. Complex systems are inherently messy and unpredictable, and trying to reduce their complexity to make them tractable in a lab may result in losing important explanatory factors. Field studies, which are essential for understanding complex systems, cannot be truly replicated due to the inherent complexity and variability of natural environments. Instead, scientists working in complex systems need to learn how to wrestle signals from the noise and establish patterns that can be shared with others to build a larger understanding of the system. This requires a different temperament and approach compared to traditional reductionist science. Embracing the complexity and learning to work with it, rather than trying to eliminate it, is the key to making progress in understanding complex systems.

    • Replicating complex experiments comes with challenges due to human-created complexityComplex experiments involving human behavior or uncontrollable environmental factors present challenges in replication due to undocumented complexities that cannot be replicated from first principles.

Replicating complex experiments, especially those involving human behavior or uncontrollable environmental factors, can be incredibly challenging due to the presence of undocumented human-created complexity. This complexity cannot be replicated from first principles and makes the experiment a hybrid of reductionist and complex field studies. This issue is not unique to the TOGETHER trial, but is a common problem in various fields, including climate science. The complexity arises from the numerous assumptions and factors that authors can plug into models, and the difficulty of assessing all of them, especially for non-experts. The expectation in scientific research is that experiments should be replicable, and any paper that cannot be replicated due to the lack of necessary mechanisms to do so is not a valid scientific publication. It's important to remember that a model can generate hypotheses, but it cannot be used to test them directly. Instead, the hypotheses must be tested in the real world.

    • Understanding the difference between complicated and complex systemsComplicated systems can be understood through analysis, while complex systems may outstrip our ability to comprehend them fully, impacting research results and scientific integrity

While complicated systems may appear complex due to their intricacy, they are not the same as complex systems which have inherent unpredictability. Complicated systems, like a highly engineered car, can be understood through analysis, even if not fully by an individual. However, complex systems, such as those modeled by scientists, may outstrip our ability to understand them completely, even with advanced technology. The difference between the two is important to recognize, as it has philosophical implications and can impact the validity of research results. Additionally, the overreliance on complex statistical analyses in scientific research can make the results opaque and open to manipulation, leading to potential violations of scientific rules. It's crucial to remember that the complexity of a system should not be conflated with its comprehensibility.

    • Transparency and scientific method in researchEnsure scientific papers follow the scientific method, stating hypothesis or observation, meeting statistical test assumptions, and maintaining transparency to uphold research integrity.

Transparency and adherence to scientific principles are crucial in scientific research. Every scientific paper should clearly state its relationship to a hypothesis – whether it's an observation leading to one or a test of one. When applying statistical tests, researchers must ensure their data meet the test's assumptions. If not, the results are not valid, despite the computer's approval. This is essential to maintain the integrity of scientific research and avoid being misled by statistically significant results. In the context of climate science, a recent study suggests clear skies may be accelerating global warming due to decreasing pollution. However, this observation may be invalid as it was reported as a result rather than an observation leading to a hypothesis or a test of one. It's essential to critically evaluate scientific findings, ensuring they adhere to the scientific method and maintain transparency.

    • Impact of pollution on climate change and debate around addressing itThe report on pollution's effect on climate change sheds light on the issue, fueling debates on tackling the climate emergency and geoengineering.

A recent report about the impact of pollution on climate change is not a new observation, but it adds greater clarity to the issue. However, the implications of this report could fuel the debate around addressing the climate emergency and the potential use of geoengineering. Meanwhile, a separate editorial in Nature raises concerns about the mental health crisis worsening as climate change continues, but the connection between the two is not firmly established and may involve some exaggeration. Overall, it's crucial to approach such reports with a critical mindset and verify the facts before jumping to conclusions.

    • Question the motivations behind messages during crisesMaintain a healthy skepticism towards crisis information sources to ensure they have our best interests at heart.

The source of information we rely on, especially during times of crisis, must be scrutinized for potential biases and agendas. The discussion highlights the example of climate change reporting, which can instill fear and create a sense of helplessness, ultimately benefiting those in power. The same pattern was observed during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is crucial to maintain a healthy skepticism and question the motivations behind the messages we receive, as they may not always have our best interests at heart. Inquiry, the heart of enlightenment, requires freedom to think and speak, even when it challenges the status quo.

    • Education and seduction: interconnected conceptsTrue education fosters a desire to learn, making the learning process enjoyable and effective. Both concepts come from the Latin root 'ducare' and aim to lead individuals towards knowledge, either through intellectual self-sufficiency or desire.

Education and seduction, despite their different connotations, are interconnected concepts. Both come from the Latin root "ducare," meaning "to lead." Education is about bringing out knowledge and intellectual self-sufficiency, while seduction can mean leading astray with false praise or, in a positive sense, drawing someone towards knowledge through desire. The speakers, Brett Weinstein and his wife, argue that they aim to educate their audience rather than seduce them, but those who prefer being led by seduction may not appreciate this approach. The speakers also reflect on the risks of certainty and the importance of remaining open to new evidence and perspectives. They believe that true education fosters a desire to learn, making the learning process enjoyable and effective.

    • Exploring Knowledge Through Education and SeductionEffective education involves regular interaction, answering questions, and exploration, with faculty and students learning from each other. The Evergreen Model and Beltane festival emphasize the importance of lifelong learning.

Education and seduction share similarities in the sense that they both involve leading and guiding, but education is about leading forth to explore new knowledge, while seduction can lead astray. The most effective way to learn and teach is through regular interaction and answering students' questions, even if they seem obvious or irrelevant at first. Faculty members can learn as much from their students as students can learn from them. The Evergreen Model, which allows for extended classroom sessions, is an effective approach to education as it allows for more time for exploration and questioning. Additionally, the Celtic festival of Beltane, historically celebrated at the midpoint between the spring equinox and summer solstice, symbolizes the importance of exploration and learning throughout one's life.

    • Celebrating the longest daylight hours at BeltaneAncient societies used Beltane to determine planting and harvesting seasons based on longest daylight hours. Take advantage of extended days and enjoy the outdoors, while following local guidelines during the pandemic.

Beltane, a historical festival celebrated in the northern temperate zone around the midpoint between the spring equinox and summer solstice, recognizes the astronomical reality of the longest daylight hours of the year. This time of year marks the beginning of the three months with the most sunlight, even though it's only halfway through spring. The equinoxes experience the fastest change in day length, while the change slows down leading up to the solstice. This astronomical observation was crucial for ancient agricultural societies, helping them determine planting and harvesting seasons. Despite the gray and cloudy weather common during this period, the extended daylight hours make it a glorious time of year. So, take advantage of the longer days and get outside. Additionally, while discussing the topic, Jake introduced his micro pizza, an artist's rendering of which was shown, with pepperoni nanoparticles. Despite the ongoing pandemic, mask-wearing rules vary, and it's essential to check local guidelines.

Anecdote in Science: The 224th Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

In this 224th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

In this episode, we discuss animal behavior: the implications of an orangutan using a medicinal plant to treat a wound, and the one-off videos that we’ve all seen—of cats preventing toddlers from falling, of a beluga whale retrieving a woman’s phone. What does this say about the minds of these other organisms, and about us? Also: dog domestication, from wolves, but not from foxes. And: the New York Times publishes more insipid garbage about vaccine injury, Bret returns to the question of what safety means, and The Nation turns its back on its muckraking roots.

Never Alone: The 223rd Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

In this 223rd in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

In this episode, we discuss science and religion, materialism and other ways of understanding our world. Can analysis and quantification explain everything? Can narrative, intuition, and creativity? All are or should be part of the scientific process; science is incomplete with only one mode. We also discuss models, how they fail, how difficult they are to assess, and what one recent climate model has to say about the role of air pollution in Earth’s temperature. Enlightenment values require that we use our freedom to inquire about all things that we are curious about. Also: happy Beltane!

Why Darwin was Right: The 222nd Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

Why Darwin was Right: The 222nd Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

In this 222nd in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

In this episode, we discuss evolution, and how we know that it is true. We discuss the different kinds of beliefs that people have—beliefs that attempt to reconcile with reality, vs beliefs that reconcile with social standing and comfort. If your beliefs put you on the outs with your friends, do you change your beliefs, or your friends? Are you willing to give up the cocktail party for reality? We also discuss research published in 2000 and funded by Fauci’s NIAID, which demonstrated that it was possible to make chimeric coronaviruses, swapping the spike protein from one to a different species entirely. Finally: sex-biased gene expression, in which genes are expressed differently in the two sexes, in anatomical systems as varied as brain, kidneys, and liver.

#139 Science Surrenders (Bret Weinstein & Heather Heying DarkHorse Livestream)

In this 139th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we discuss the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

This week, we discuss whether reality is going to be tolerated—by internet randos, by magazines supposedly devoted to disseminating scientific findings to an interested public, and by actual scientific journals. A new editorial in Nature Human Behavior is breath-taking in its rejection of the scientific process and values, and, therefore, of reality. Then: what anti-scientific buffoonery is behind not allowing unvaccinated-against-Covid Novak Dvokovic, argued by some to be the best tennis player ever, to compete in the U.S. Open? And: what is the New York Times up to?
