Can You Really Conquer Hatred Through Love? | Father Gregory Boyle

Can You Really Conquer Hatred Through Love? | Father Gregory Boyle

The idea of loving people no matter what— no matter how obnoxious or unacceptable their behavior is can sound simultaneously treacly and downright impossible.

But today's guest Father Gregory Boyle talks about the practicality of this idea by showing how the concept of loving no matter what can be used as a tool— not to condone bad behavior but to help see people as doing their best, no matter how unskillfully.

Father Gregory Boyle is a Jesuit priest who founded a remarkable organization called Homeboy Industries, which is the largest gang intervention, rehabilitation, and reentry program in the world. He has a new book out called, The Whole Language: The Power of Extravagant Tenderness

In this episode we talk about:

    • How Homeboy Industries began 34 years ago
    • Boyle’s practices for working with stress
    • What he means when he says you have to put death in its place
    • Motivating people through joy rather than admonition
    • How to catch yourself when you’re about to demonize or be judgmental
    • How to set boundaries
    • How to dole out consequences without closing the doors to anybody
    • And we talk about Father Boyle’s quite expansive and inclusive notion of God

Content warnings: There are mentions of sensitive topics including, sexual trauma, violence, drug abuse and domestic abuse.

103: Coss Marte | Staying Out of Prison with Muscle and Conviction

103: Coss Marte | Staying Out of Prison with Muscle and Conviction

Coss Marte (@CossMarte) is the founder and CEO of ConBody, a NYC-based fitness studio that hires formerly incarcerated individuals to teach fitness classes, and author of ConBody: The Revolutionary Bodyweight Prison Boot Camp, Born from an Extraordinary Story of Hope.

What We Discuss with Coss Marte:

    • How a 13-year-old immigrant from the Dominican Republic scaled up a $5 million per year drug business -- the Uber for cocaine.
    • How Stephen King (probably not the one you're thinking of) brought this whole operation down, inadvertently leading to a domino effect of positive change beginning with Coss Marte.
    • The power of mindset and fitness to stay sane and healthy behind bars -- where the odds are stacked overwhelmingly against personal improvement on any level.
    • What Coss and ConBody Fitness are doing to help rehabilitate the incarcerated and break the cycle of recidivism so many fall into.
    • How lessons learned from the illicit drug trade transferred to Coss' legitimate business and helped him build a bridge of understanding between the world's successful and its formerly incarcerated.
    • And much more...

This episode is brought to you by Four Sigmatic. You might remember Four Sigmatic for their mushroom coffee, which was created by their clever Finnish founders. Recently, I’ve been testing a new product -- their reishi mushroom elixir -- to help me get to sleep.

As you might know, I struggled with insomnia for years. So, I asked the guys at Four Sigmatic to make a special, custom version of their reishi product. They did, and now it’s become a part of my nightly routine. If you’d like to naturally improve sleep quality naturally, I think you’ll enjoy the reishi elixir.

This podcast is also brought to you by Athletic Greens. I get asked all the time, “If you could only use one supplement, what would it be?” My answer is, inevitably, Athletic Greens. It is my all-in-one nutritional insurance. I recommended it in The 4-Hour Body and did not get paid to do so. As a listener of The Tim Ferriss Show, you’ll get 30 percent off your first order at AthleticGreens.com/Tim.
