Stop Calling Me Strong ft. Barbara Johnson Milburn
Happy New Year! In this new season, I'm doing a series entitled Stop Calling Me Strong. I'm conversing with Black women about the impact of the 'strong black woman's burden' on their lives and what, if anything, they are doing to heal from the tendency to self-silence, caretake and present as independent. In episode S3 E1, I talk with Barbara Johnson Milburn who says she is so tired of being called strong. We talked about how her man, and the sisters in her church, responded when her only child, her son, passed away. We discuss why other black women (and men) seem to find it hard to offer comfort and support when a 'strong black woman' is sick, sad, or grieving.
