Intentional Serenity: Kristina Marty on recognizing the available options and letting go of the others

Intentional Serenity: Kristina Marty on recognizing the available options and letting go of the others

Having decided on a life of public service, Kristina Marty pursued public administration immediately after graduating college—first in a masters of public administration program and then in various practitioner roles, mostly focused on health and human services agencies. After these work experiences, which included a little research, she decided to go back for her PhD and looked at public administration from the academic side. Starting in a tenure track position and a newborn and felt the crush of trying to do it all but somehow she kept things together. At a certain point, however, she learned that all was not as it seemed and the marriage that she was relying on dissolved.

The lessons she learned from dealing with this unexpected and unwelcome wrench in the plans taught her a lot about what to do when your first choice outcome is no longer in the set of realistic options. And when health became something more than academic for her, she relied on the lessons learned with her earlier dose of adversity.

In this episode, find out from Kristina how learning what you can and can't control can ultimately guide you to a little serenity and gratitude.

    About This Episode’s Guest

Kristina Marty is a mother and cancer survivor Kristina Marty who also currently serves as Senior Associate Dean in the College of Community and Public Affairs, and Professor of Public Administration at Binghamton University. As she suggested, if you have young people in your life, learn more about the HPV vaccine at cdc.gov/hpv and encourage them to get the vaccine, if eligible.

    Serenity for the New Year

    Serenity for the New Year

Serenity, what a nice idea. Everyone is so stressed. How do we find serenity? There are serenity spas, serenity this, serenity that but a true inner peace isn't found in products.
The Serenity Prayer asks for and shows the way to true serenity. This podcast digs into those steps and encourages you to live wisely, with acceptance, and to take action when possible. Then the magic of receiving and developing serenity work together.

Bonus- Al-Anon Book Study - The Peace of the Serenity Prayer

This Bonus Episode first aired for the Apple Podcast Subscribers and Patreon Members on March 4, 2022.  I wanted to share this along with the other episodes for 7 weeks that were a book study on some of the Al-Anon topics important to Soul Recovery as a Bonus to the community.

As we continue or book study of 'How Al-Anon Works for Families & Friends of Alcoholics" and finishing chapter 10 on Changed Attitudes and the last few sections that cover the Serenity Prayer and Serenity.

The serenity prayer is a beautiful and simple reminder to accept others and circumstances for what they are and to have the courage to take responsibility for our own happiness and spiritual growth.  "In the Serenity Prayer, we turn to the God of our understanding for the attributes necessary to live a life more fully: serenity, courage, and wisdom."

    God grant me the serenity

To Accept the things I cannot change,

Courage to change the things I can,

And wisdom to know the difference.

Surrender to the Process: Dating is a Journey Not a Battle

Surrender to the Process: Dating is a Journey Not a Battle

What You’ll Hear In This Episode:

    • We are often disappointed when the people we are dating don’t meet our expectations, but we have to surrender to the process and realize we are not entitled to have them follow our unwritten rules.
    • Lisa sees many parallels with the 12 Step Program and the dating process.
    • What does it mean to surrender to the process?  Knowing that we can’t control every aspect or outcome, incompatibility does not equal failure, and resistance is counterintuitive.
    • Trusting the process can be scary, but there is no other way to gain wisdom and experience without going through it.
    • We can’t let the voice of insecurity or pride write our stories; our attitude and our reactions can change the entire outcome.
    • It’s important to remember the dating process is a journey.  Have you thought about why you are dating?
    • Our best version of ourselves will attract the best people; acting with authenticity and genuinely from the heart is the only approach.
    • Every single person can benefit from the perspective of a third party mentor or coach to help them grow.
    • Investing in dating will pay out in dividends in so many facets of life from adding years to your lifespan, increasing your income level, and more.

    Quotes

    • “The opposite of surrender is not to let go of control.  It’s to let go of resistance.”
    • “Surrendering to the process does not mean giving up.”
    • “What surrender means in a spiritual sense is that you stop fighting the process and you start to flow with it.”
    • “As you surrender to the process, the beauty of this is you’re letting this process teach you.”
    • “The dating process is actually a journey.”
    • “Every date is a stepping stone to love.”
    • “You’re not finding the right man, you're becoming the woman that you need to be to attract the man you’ve been dreaming of.”
    • “There’s nothing in our lives that will give us the return on investment that dating will.”
    • “We don’t have control over when, where, or how this happens.  All we can do is keep opening our hearts and be ready.”

    Gap Style Meditation

    Gap Style Meditation

I love teaching a Gap Style Meditation to people who are new to meditating.  This method will help you discover what it feels like to be in a meditative state.  Once you have experienced this meditative sensation, it becomes easier and easier to come back to it the next time you meditate.

I also love the Gap Style Meditation because it taught me an important lesson:  meditation is not about silencing all of your thoughts.  It’s learning how to find the space in between your thoughts and resting there.  Then, learning to expand the silence a little more every time.  Understanding this simple principle helped me so much and I want to do the same for you today.

This is a guided meditation using the first few words of the Serenity Prayer as a tool.  It's time to Hurry Up and Meditate!

The Serenity Prayer and Third Step Prayer in Soul Recovery

The Serenity Prayer and Third Step Prayer in Soul Recovery

I have been using the Serenity and Third Step Prayers as part of my Soul Recovery tool box.  These prayers are not just for the rooms of 12 step and Al-Anon- these prayers are for anyone interested in a happier and healthier emotional live, otherwise known as Soul Recovery.  I still say both of these prayers at least once a day, and in early recovery it was a mantra to get me past complete overwhelm. This episode talks about how these prayers have helped shift and change my life for the better and how to use them in Soul Recovery.

I promised in the episode to include them in the show notes, so here they are.   As Soul Recovery is non-religious, please use what ever terms feel best for you in exchange for (God).

Serenity Prayer: (As used in 12 step recovery)
"(God) grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference."

Third Step Prayer: (AA Big Book)
"(God), I offer myself to Thee – To build with me and to do with me as Thou wilt. Relieve me of the bondage of self, that I may better do Thy will. Take away my difficulties, that victory over them may bear witness to those I would help of Thy Power, Thy Love, and Thy Way of Life.”

    Don't Carpet the World | Episode 84

    Don't Carpet the World | Episode 84

"It's easier to put slippers on your feet than to carpet the world" is a Chinese proverb. The carpet metaphor is used in this episode to illustrate the issue of control. I talk about how we can learn to stop trying to control others (carpet the world) and work on controlling ourselves (put slippers on our feet). This an example of what the Serenity Prayer refers to as "the wisdom to know the difference."

    Damon W - Controlling the Controllables - Episode 21

    Damon W - Controlling the Controllables - Episode 21

Let’s introduce our guest speaker for today, Damon W, whose topic is “Controlling the Controllables”.

Sentenced to sixty-five years in a Texas prison, Damon once had it all.  At 20 years old, he was a Division 1 starting quarterback, after a career-ending injury, Damon was by all outside appearances, very successful.  It all came crashing down when he turned to hard core drugs to cope with disappointments of life.  After a fateful discussion during his incarceration with a seasoned convict, Damon had a spiritual awakening. He learned a lesson about a single coffee bean that changed his whole perspective. Armed with a program of recovery, a renewed faith, and a miraculous second chance at life, Damon emerged from over seven years of prison a changed man. His story of redemption, grit and determination continues to inspire many today, and I know it will inspire you.

Welcome to the Reco12 Speaker Meeting.  We are an organization whose addictions include alcohol, drugs, lust and sex, food and gambling, just to name a few.  We come together from all places, faiths and backgrounds to learn the similarities of addiction and to gain tools and hope from others who are walking a similar path.  We invite recovering addicts with at least 1 year sobriety and who are actively working their recovery in their respective fellowships to share their experience, strength and hope on a live Zoom meeting, each Friday at 12:00 pm central time, for 20-25 minutes.  Then, we, the live audience, get the opportunity to ask questions of the speaker for another 20-25 minutes.   If you are hearing this podcast recorded and would like to participate as a live audience member, or if you would like to be a guest speaker in a future meeting, please go to www.reco12.com to learn more and submit your email address there to receive weekly invitations or to submit to become a guest speaker.

Reco12 is an ad-free service and we appreciate your help in keeping it that way.  We gratefully accept contributions to help cover the costs of the Zoom platform, podcast platform, web hosting, and administrative costs.  To contribute, you can go to https://www.reco12.com/support  or you can click the link to PayPal (https://www.paypal.me/reco12)  in the chat of the live meeting.  When you contribute, please specify the meeting number.  This is meeting number 21.
