Acceptance is Badass - A Reading From Coping Courageously

Acceptance is Badass - A Reading From Coping Courageously

This week I share the story of one of my patients and the woman he loved. Nick was a man in his 20s with an advanced cancer and caring for him touched my heart.

He had to face the difficult reality in front of him in order to create the life that he wanted. He embraced acceptance and it changed his future.

Come listen to a reading from Coping Courageously: A Heart-Centered Guide for Navigating a Loved One's Illness Without Losing Yourself. You'll hear Nick's story and several others and you'll come to believe that acceptance is badass.

My patients who practiced acceptance resolved to live their life fully, regardless of their diagnosis. Whether they were facing chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, or an end of life illness the squeezed all the juice out of life that they could.

    They coped courageously.

This week I challenge you to consider your own life through the lens of acceptance.

Let me know what you come up with.

Being In The Hospital: How doctors and patients can support each other

Being In The Hospital: How doctors and patients can support each other

The healthcare system is rough on everyone. Physicians and patients are both frustrated and everyone has a point.

This week we talk about three big topics that come up in the hospital: information, emotions and decisions.  We discuss them from the clinicians' perspective and then from the patients' perspective so that we can better understand each other.

The system is frustrating for everyone, but my hope is that patients and clinicians can turn towards each other instead of away from each other.

What not to say: thoughtful use of words in serious illness care

What not to say: thoughtful use of words in serious illness care

    "She's a fighter"
"We don't want her to give up"
"Mr. Amos is comfort care now"

Are these helpful words for families facing serious illness? Not so helpful? Should you avoid the words "death" and "dying" when talking to families?

Words matter. And when caring for palliative patients with cancer, heart disease and other life-limiting conditions, words matter a lot.

This week I'll give 6 examples of words or phrases that require a thoughtful approach an might be tripping you up.

The Power of Natural Healing: Jordan and Heather Harger

The Power of Natural Healing: Jordan and Heather Harger
Jordan and Heather Harger are a Florida couple who has been battling their son's serious illness with natural means. Jordan is a Florida firefighter/paramedic and Heather is a fantastic stay-at-home mom who schools and cares for their four young children. Sy, their six-year-old son, has been battling a condition called Eosinophilic Esophagitis since birth which can eventually cause the esophagus to permanently close. Sy became so allergic and symptomatic that doctors removed ALL foods from his diet for over a year. After years of frustration, desperation, and not getting the answers they needed from allopathic medicine, they were introduced to the Gerson Therapy. Today, after over a year of being on the therapy, Sy enjoys a large variety of whole foods and has experienced a total reversal of his severe symptoms. The Harger family continues to push toward total healing and have been blessed to share thier family's remarkable story of faith and perserverance through their blog (No Muck Messages) and recently on Anderson Cooper's national talk show, Anderson Live. It is their goal to encourage others who struggle with any family members’ health and help them understand that there is a better path to wellness!
