The Unacceptable Beauty of Erzsébet Báthory with Alex Kaschuta

The Unacceptable Beauty of Erzsébet Báthory with Alex Kaschuta
The Hungarian countess Erzsébet Báthory (1560-1610), allegedly one of the most prolific mass murderers ever, occupies the border zone between history and legend. She has become a part of the vampire mythology associated with Southeast Europe as well as a subject of fascination for avant-garde writers and artists and a frequent pop culture reference. Báthory emerges out of the shadowy depths of archaic magic, but also stands as a proto-modern female Faust whose commitment to her own all-consuming violent passions anticipated the visions of the Marquis de Sade. In an age of attenuated taboos, her extreme acts retain the capacity to shock us; she still hovers on the Outside of civilized life. My guest Alex Kaschuta and I use Báthory as a starting point for discussing the paroxysms of the modern ideal of individual freedom, with some help from Sade, Camille Paglia, and the surrealist writers Valentine Penrose and Alejandra Pizarnik. We also address the tendency of recent pop culture to domesticate the terrors of Báthory's crimes, and the way that her type of Sadeian sexual depravity, often denied or downplayed, resurfaces in discussions of porn and sex robots. S2E16: Talking Sex Dolls and Robots

S2E16: Talking Sex Dolls and Robots
With the advances in technology, sex dolls have rapidly evolved overtime. Dolls that were once blow-up, balloon like and cartoonistic in appearance are now more realistic than ever. With silicon skin and human appearance, they are designed to look and feel more like a real life person. Shockingly, female-bodied Sex Dolls can even be customised to resemble real women and girls.

In this episode, we chat with Caitlin Roper about the harm female-bodied sex dolls and sex robots pose on women and girls.

Caitlin is an activist, writer and PhD candidate at RMIT university in Melbourne, Australia where she is researching female-bodied sex dolls and robots. Caitlin is also campaign manager at Collective shout, a grassroots campaigning movement challenging the objectification of women and the sexualisation of girls in media, advertising and popular culture. To keep up to date with Caitlin's work, follow her on twitter

Sex Doll Fantasies (And We're Getting a Sex Room!)

Sex Doll Fantasies (And We're Getting a Sex Room!)

Where would you even store a sex doll?

That's a question we ask and never fully answer, but we'll have to figure it out sooner or later because it's probably only a matter of time before I get one.

This week, we talk about the appeal of sex dolls, why I really want one, and how we ended up almost buying two sets of Pussy Tits.

    Sexbots and Normal Sleep

    Sexbots and Normal Sleep

Putting out a warning now, this episode contains material on sexual health.

     The Question for today:

“With AI you can you lose the humanity?” -Summary

Nils and Matt discuss a follow-up statement and question that was posted after the last episode on AI in psychiatry. The listener states “AI must be flexible and compromise…it can cause more harm to the consumer”. This may cause an AI to be ridged and not adapt but stick to what they are programmed to find.

Can you study humanity and can you replicate it in AI?

People are not great at guessing expressions and we actually practice and teach skills on labeling emotions. AI might be able to actually read an emotion more effectively.

    SEXBOTS

We then dive into the future when it comes to sex and sexual health with sex robots. Texas recently had a news article on a brothel that was staffed by sex robots. This new technology has already made it into the mainstream and the idea was even in the movie Lars and the Real Girl starring Ryan Gosling.

We then talk about this article here on the reduction of sexual intercourse in our youth. Nils ask Matt on why he thinks sex may be decreasing. Matt talks about technology might be decreasing the need for interpersonal relationships. Easy access to technology gives us instant gratification and we may not seek it from face to face interactions.

We also experience that moment of reality that we are old men. We quiz each other on the term from here.

Music used in this episode is the song Cantina Rag by Jackson F. Smith from the Free Music Archive.

Episode 11: No Such Thing as Bad Publicity?

Episode 11: No Such Thing as Bad Publicity?
Yoel and Mickey discuss how scientists should publicize their work. Should scientists issue press releases about their findings? Should they write op-ed columns to communicate directly with the public? If Yoel writes an op-ed about Mickey's paper, is that weird? Do scientists have an obligation to share their work with the public, or does self-promotion involve too many perverse incentives? Bonus: Toronto sex doll brothel, raw water, and beaver fever.
