Janice Jernigan - Growing up with Grief

Janice Jernigan - Growing up with Grief

Janice Jernigan lost her sister Julie when she was 3 years old, and this major loss ignited a cascade of secondary losses. Janice lost the opportunity of sharing milestones with her sister, receiving advice from her growing up and even beauty tricks. Janice tried to hold on to her sister Julie through many ways, and it emerged in her relationships, and eventually in her body. These are some of the reasons she decided to write her book Opening Up to Grief: A Surviving Sibling's Journey with Loss and Love.

In this week's episode, Janice and Maya talk about how it was growing as an only child, knowing that she had an older sister, what was life for her while she moved through it without opening up to her grief or experiencing her grief journey, and how comparison can be the biggest thief of grief. They also talk about stories from Janice’s book in detail.

Episode sponsored by Janice Jernigan, author of Opening Up to Grief: A Surviving Sibling's Journey with Loss and Love.

Episode 14: Talking to Kids About Sibling Loss

Episode 14: Talking to Kids About Sibling Loss

I have a unique perspective on this topic because I have been on both sides of the coin as a sibling who has tried to understand stillbirth loss and as a parent who has had to try to explain it to my own children.

In this episode, I tell my own story of how it felt to be on both sides and how we decided to handle it as parents. I give my best advice to anyone who is going through it now or who may go through it in the future.

It can be really hard to face so many questions your kids may have about pregnancy loss or stillbirth but it also can be very healing to have someone who shares your dreams about how it could have been.

I do encourage you to let them in on as much as you feel comfortable with and to show your emotion to them. Find ways together that you can all celebrate your baby's life.

Grief and Sibling Loss: This is Not Like Any Other Loss with Guest Marina Mularz

Grief and Sibling Loss: This is Not Like Any Other Loss with Guest Marina Mularz
Author, writer, and fellow brother-loss survivor Marina Mularz joins me on this episode discussing what makes sibling loss a unique and deeply misunderstood experience.

We connected on Instagram after I read some of her beautiful poetry about grief and adapting to the loss of her brother. I admired her ability to be open (#freegrief) about her journey, and believe it's so vital that we allow our communities and the world into the experience of sibling grief. Unfortunately, despite the ubiquity of loss, the fallout is often deemed private and is deeply misunderstood, leaving the griever adrift and often alone.

In this episode, we laugh, we cry, and we get real. We talk about our brothers, how their loss affected us, what the dynamics are now and how they were before, and our rituals focusing on the question, "hello grief, what are we going to do today?"

Biggest takeaway: you can be joyful and still grieve.

Two Brown Girls Talk about Grief and Being a PoC In the U.S.
Did you know Citizen: Grief. is produced, hosted, and was created by an Indian-American woman? As a first-generation Desi, she wanted to spend some time addressing current events. She brought a friend with her, Tara Ashraf, a Pakistani-American who runs a blog called, In-Between American. This episode is full of humor, wit, honesty. It explores grief, as she is grieving her mother and your host, Grief and the Modern Girl is mourning her brother, what it means to be brown in the United States of America, and what we can do to become better allies to Black Americans fighting for their rights. It's a long episode, so Part 2 is coming that delves more into the #BML movement and what Desi Americans can do to find their place in this fight and how to be a better supporter and will be on a spinoff podcast yet to come.

Grief in the Time of Corona(virus)

Grief in the Time of Corona(virus)
The world has come to a screeching halt and we are all absorbing collective trauma. But, there are grievers, and now new grievers and how the hell do we navigate loss without being able to be with our support network. Without being able to have a proper sendoff and gain an iota of closure? How do we acknowledge and respect those who are already enduring the unimaginable during a time of separation? I get into all of this in this episode. Stay safe and share if you find it helpful.
