Why Charles Augustus Howell Was Called the Worst Man in Victorian London

Why Charles Augustus Howell Was Called the Worst Man in Victorian London

Described by some as a, “charming rogue,” Charles Augustus Howell was a dodgy figure in Victorian art circles, in particular London’s Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood movement. There was extortion. There was forgery. And just a whole lot of unsavory bits. Howell was an art dealer by trade who was also known to manipulate those around him so he could acquire works that would establish and increase his reputation – and his financial security. When that didn’t work, in the words of biographer Humphrey Hare, "Howell did not hesitate to blackmail." So let’s get to know this charming-yet-unsavory character.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and the Truth Behind the 'Cottingley Fairies'

In the summer of 1917, Elsie Wright and Frances Griffiths convinced a whole lot of people, including the famous Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, they'd seen fairies neat their home -- and they had photographic evidence to prove it. After decades of keeping their ruse a secret, they admitted their "joke was to last two hours, and it has lasted 70 years.

Psycho Bob Says Read the House of Silk by Anthony Horowitz

Psycho Bob Says Read the House of Silk by Anthony Horowitz

Bob and Shaner recommend the book, "The House of Silk," by Anthony Horowitz. This is the first Sherlock Holmes novel to be authorized by the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Estate.

Horowitz has been called one of "the most original and best spy-kids authors of the century" by the New York Times. It is set in London in 1890, and takes place just after the short story, "The Adventure of the Dying Detective." Discover the two intertwined mysteries and why Watson has this manuscript locked away for 100 years.

Spiritualism: Seances, Trances, and Sherlock Holmes

Spiritualism: Seances, Trances, and Sherlock Holmes

In the 19th Century Spiritualism was all the rage with Mediums setting up shop or hitting the road all across America and Europe.  While some were likely genuine others were simply taking advantage of the grieving, though the lengths and tactics used to deceive were impressive.  The movement also had famous historical figures like Sir Arthur Conan Doyle backing research and conducting in serious studies of the most famous psychics.  Join us as we discuss this fascinating time in history.

    The Game is Afoot!

    The Game is Afoot!

Shakin Shaner has a complete nerd-fest in this homage to the original Sherlock Holmes novels and short stories. He relates several noteworthy items, such as Sherlock Holmes, as a fictional character has been featured in more movies than any other character in the history of cinema and that the phrase, "Elementary my dear Watson," is not found in any of the novels or short stories.

    Wonderful Things

    Wonderful Things

Wealth can be both a blessing and a curse. It allows many to wander far and wide, and one soul has been wandering for an eternity.

The discovery of a lifetime almost didn’t happen, but when Howard Carter found King Tut’s tomb everything changed. Curses and mummies came with fame and fortune. Come see how the fortune behind the discovery also connects to our stories of heirs and heiresses, the Titanic and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, as well as Universal’s Mummy Franchise and Downton Abbey.

Other people and subjects include: November 1922, Ava Alice Muriel Astor, Lady Evelyn Herbert of Carnarvon, Lord Carnarvon, Highclere Castle, Prince Kamel Fahm Bey of Egypt, Pola Negri, and the ongoing pop culture fascination with Egypt.

Managing Suppliers and Enterprise Spending: Let the Numbers Do the Talking

Managing Suppliers and Enterprise Spending: Let the Numbers Do the Talking
The buzz: Supply chain health. As global barriers for business commerce are being torn down, enterprises have unparalleled opportunities to create unique advantages within their supply chains. The upside: enterprise spending now spans more diverse geographies and suppliers than ever before. The downside: supply chains are infested with supplier risks, savings leakages and procurement inefficiencies that often go undetected. Can cutting-edge analytics and real-time supplier visibility help you mitigate the risks, as well as drive trusted and confident spending decisions? The experts speak. Rahul Raj, Deloitte: “It is a capital mistake to theorize before one has data. Insensibly one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts.” (Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, 1892). Keertan Rai, SAP: “Torture numbers and they will confess to anything” (Gregg Easterbrook). Join us for Managing Suppliers and Enterprise Spending: Let the Numbers Do the Talking.
