In this episode Lisa L. Lewis suggests making sleep a family priority, modeling good sleep habits, and having ongoing conversations about the importance of sleep. She also recommends assessing the factors that may be contributing to late bedtimes, such as overscheduling or excessive tech use, and working collaboratively with teens to address these issues.

We all get a kid who probes our weakness

We all get a kid who probes our weakness

Just continuing the reflections on parenting whilst I’m putting my 1 year old to sleep (you will hear him)… I’m thinking about how much I have always loved sleep, somehow it feels like my children have been designed specifically to train me out of the need for it.  I think it’s been 10 years now since I slept properly (I’m not even joking 🙃).. I can’t wait to sleep again in life 😴 😭

Hope you enjoy this random episode

    Why Did I Space Out?

    Why Did I Space Out?

Although many (specifically sleep-deprived) high schoolers may start falling into a variety of habits, one of them often includes spacing out. To honor the title of this episode, Yusra and Lauren discuss specific causes of spacing out, along with how junior year has led to their own moments of spacing out and any potential benefits of this habit. At the end, they give some tips on reducing how often you space out!

Addressing Sleep Problems with Dr Kansagra @thatsleepdoc

Addressing Sleep Problems with Dr Kansagra @thatsleepdoc

Welcome back to Season Two of the Rest is Best podcast! I'm so excited for this season as I have loads of special guests lined up plus I will be hosting bite sized episodes every other week with step by step, detailed tips and tricks to get you and your family a little more rest.

In today's episode I speak with Dr Sujay Kansagra aka @thatsleepdoc on Instagram. Dr Kansagra is a Paediatric neurologist, the director of Duke's Paediatric Neurology Sleep Medicine Program, author of My Child Won't Sleep: A Quick Guide for the Sleep-Deprived Parent  and father or 2.

Some the questions I had for Dr Kansagra include:

    • How do you define a sleep ‘problem’? We often hear the phrase ‘its not a problem if it is working for you" (the parents) but when does it actually become a problem for the child?
    • Off the back of discussing the science behind sleep, what are your thoughts on sleep training?
    • Given all the science and what we know about sleep, why do you think addressing sleep concerns is such a debated topic?
    • What are you thoughts on the sentiment “every baby is different” when it comes to sleep?
    • What advice would you give parents who feel like there is not way to improve their baby’s sleep?

In his book Dr. Kansagra presents ALL of the sleep solutions that have actual scientific data to back them. If it isn't proven to work, it's not in this book. The solutions are straight-forward, with easy-to-follow, step-by-step instructions that get to the point and get there quick. (2 of the methods I use in my sleep courses are in there too!)

This is a great conversation for anyone wanting a bit more reassurance and guidance on seeking sleep support and the benefits it can give to your family.

New Job, Kanye West Breakdown, Dating Styles, Brian Laundrie Autopsy and Quick Recap

New Job, Kanye West Breakdown, Dating Styles, Brian Laundrie Autopsy and Quick Recap

Happy 1 year to us! And thank you all for following with us!

Liz is in a great mood, however Bree had a shit day. Bree also talks about how Penelope deals with stressful situations and how her and Sam are trying to help P to handle better.  Its starting to get better but it has definitely been a work in progress.

Bree also talks about how she had a weird day off because she could lay in bed and watch rerun tv but she could not sleep when she had the time with an empty house. Just too exhausted to sleep.  Liz also talks about how she deals with waking up early on the weekends now.

Liz then gives her final decision on the job she had been talking about and that she had interviewed for… and lets just say its gonna be a hard no.  And Bree shares a TikTok she saw about people at their jobs and how they should react to no pay raise in the most boss ass way.

Of course the girls had to talk about all the drama about Kanye West on social media the last couple weeks. From Pete Davidson, to Kid Cudi, to Billie Elish, and everyone in between, nobody is safe from the war path Kanye has started. This topic leads into Bree and Liz’s thoughts on Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker’s inappropriate social media posts. Bree and Liz have two VERY different ideas as to why the older women are getting with these younger rockstar men.

Then dating gets brought up and the girls talk about the struggles that come with dating now. They could not be happier to be in a relationship/married. There are so many expectations from people now that there never was before. The dating stories are endless and it seems like a lot of the expectations are sexual. Liz talks about her lack of dating life before her husband Christian, but also why she was on any dating apps at all.

The Brian Laundrie autopsy report came out and Bree and Liz have a lot of questions about it and are not convinced that he is actually dead.

The girls had to do a quick recap of their favorite reality tv shows.  And finally they share their favorites of the week.

COUNTERCULTURE Ep. 14 | Margin with Matt Fogle

COUNTERCULTURE Ep. 14 | Margin with Matt Fogle
Are you tired? Are you feeling the stress of a new school year? Is your schedule so full that you don't have room to breathe? We think this is a problem that spans across all ages, but is very prevalent in the lives of high school students. So, we brought in former Eastview High School pastor Matt Fogle to discuss what it looks like to practice margin in our everyday lives. After working at Eastview for 5 years, Matt is working as a pastor in Arizona, and we really think you'll be encouraged by our conversation with him as we dive into the topic of margin!

Sleep deprivation is a b!tch, but you aren't

Sleep deprivation is a b!tch, but you aren't

This is for everyone who has woken up exhausted, whilst the person beside them is bright and breezy. We know it's tough. You're shattered. But here’s the thing. Hating someone for being well rested when you're sleep deprived doesn’t help anyone. We’re going to soothe that angry voice in your head, and maybe even help you to feel lighter about your own lack of sleep.

Health & Fitness Friday - What Happens When You Don't Sleep?

Health & Fitness Friday - What Happens When You Don't Sleep?

Sleep deficiencies have both long term and short term impacts on your health. And while sleep is one of the most fundamental ways to improve our health and well being, it is also one of the easiest to overlook. In our modern world, full of endless entertainment and information, 33% of American Adults get less than 6.5 hour of sleep per night. As you'll learn in this week's Health & Fitness Friday mini-pod, habitual sleeplessness has both short and long term effects that are universally negative.

Today's mini-pod was inspired by a recent blog from Precision Nutrition, which you can find here - https://www.precisionnutrition.com/all-about-sleep
The original post is FULL of information on how sleep relates to body composition, the concept of "sleep debt" and more.

I would love to hear from our listeners why Health & Fitness topics matter to YOU and what you would love to learn more about on future Health & Fitness Friday Podcasts. The best way to do this is to send us a message via Instagram, where you can find the podcast @essential.strength.podcast

Hope you all find this episode valuable and that you GET SOME SLEEP this weekend!

Satiated Saturdays Episode 17: Less Sleep = Less Satiation

Satiated Saturdays Episode 17: Less Sleep = Less Satiation

    Happy Satiated Saturday!

We have been talking a lot about emotional satiation and befriending our emotions recently. For the next several weeks, we will be exploring the factors that can affect our ability to stabilize our moods, throw off our appetite, and increase the likelihood of reaching for food for non-physical hunger reasons.

We will explore sleep, stress, impaired gut function, skipping meals, quality of food, and thirst.

Today we are going to start with sleep.

In this episode, we dive into how getting less than 7 hours of sleep can affect our food choices and how much we eat. I will also provide 5 tips for cultivating a more satiating sleep routine.

You can also read the transcript to this week’s episode here.

Feel free to email me any insights that got cultivated for you and looking forward to connecting with you all soon!
