How SMEs may be our biggest hope for net-zero

How SMEs may be our biggest hope for net-zero

What significant role do small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) play in the global journey towards achieving net-zero emissions, particularly in the MENA region?

Globally, small and medium-sized enterprises – SMEs - make up 90% of all businesses and represent more than 50% of employment worldwide. Yet, according to  2023 research by the World Economic Forum and Bain & Company, here, in the MENA region, just 12% of SMEs have set net zero targets with even fewer -  7% - mapping out a transition strategy.

    The tide is turning, however.

Through COP28, a new SME Climate Hub MENA initiative has been established to drive climate action in the private sector. In the UAE, the Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce recently launched a Net Zero Transition program for SMEs and the broader business sector. And, in Oman, the government is working with small and medium-sized businesses under the auspices of the National Net Zero Programme to showcase opportunities for them to engage in projects that support zero neutrality and carbon emission reduction goals.

These, and other regional programmes are a critically positive step in driving momentum for the implementation of net-zero strategies in the countdown to 2050.

As countries, governments, cities, businesses, communities and individuals, we all have a role to play in the net-zero journey.

On episode 12, our panelists will examine the net-zero transition challenges facing regional SMEs; discuss what level of support is required to accelerate action; and share positive examples to illustrate why small businesses may be our biggest hope for net zero.

Moderator Jeffrey Beyer, Founder, and Managing Director of Zest Associates, is joined remotely by Dr Saeed Alhassan, A Khalifa University Abu Dhabi professor and former director of the Gas Research Center, and founder of Manhat, Lydia Elliott, Deputy Director, Supplier Decarbonisation at the We Mean Business Coalition and Martin Reynolds, CEO and co-founder of UAE headquartered Zero Carbon Ventures.

    Minority Reporting: Beyond WEIRD(E) Cybercrime

    Minority Reporting: Beyond WEIRD(E) Cybercrime

    Notes:

    1. Dr. Kemp initially moved to Spain and worked as an English teacher before deciding to go back to university to study a social science. He ended up choosing criminology due to the available classes in the morning.
    2. While in university, Dr. Kemp became interested in corporate crime and white-collar crime, but later specialized in cybercrime due to its potential for funding and career opportunities.
    3. Dr. Kemp discussed the challenges of studying in a different country and in a non-native language. He initially had limited Spanish proficiency but learned the language to a level where he could pursue a degree taught mainly in Spanish.
    4. Cybercrime is still significantly underreported, with organizations often weighing the incentives and reasons not to report, such as reputational damage and potential increases in insurance premiums.
    5. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) face difficulties in reporting cybercrimes due to the technical abilities and resources required. The reporting systems are not conducive to SMEs, and there is a need for assistance and support from states to streamline the reporting process for smaller organizations.
    6. Dr. Kemp emphasized the importance of distinguishing between reporting cybercrimes to police and criminal justice authorities versus reporting to cybersecurity providers. He noted that there seems to be more interest in private organizations reporting to other private organizations, possibly due to concerns about reputational damage.
    7. Dr. Kemp highlighted the limited access to data in Spain and Latin American countries, which hinders research in those regions. He mentioned the lack of a culture of evaluation and the absence of centralized data repositories. This limitation is problematic due to the questionable generalizability of research findings from other countries to Spain and Latin America.
    8. Dr. Kemp expressed the need for more longitudinal surveys to better understand the effectiveness of cybersecurity controls and tools. Cross-sectional surveys have limitations in establishing causal relationships and unraveling the timing of control implementation and incidents.
    9. Dr. Kemp discussed his upcoming book on cyber fraud, which aims to bring international literature on the topic of cybercrime to the Spanish-speaking world. He acknowledged the challenge of applying research findings from other countries to Spanish-speaking contexts, particularly concerning offender characteristics and prevention measures.
    10. Dr. Kemp mentioned his recent work on online victimization and older people, focusing on the impact of fear of crime and the digital divide. He emphasized the need to address older adults' concerns and promote their full participation in the digital society.

Dave Christie: What's needed to pull NZ's supply chains out of 'serious, if not critical condition'

Dave Christie: What's needed to pull NZ's supply chains out of 'serious, if not critical condition'

New Zealand's supply chains are in "a serious, if not critical condition," requiring holistic systems thinking and a long-term focus, investment and government support to become stronger and more resilient, says self proclaimed supply chain tragic Dave Christie.

Christie, who has worked in supply chain roles for the army, PwC, the Warehouse, Fonterra, Coda Group, Tainui Group Holdings developing the Ruakura Superhub, and Synergic Technologies, spoke to interest.co.nz in the latest episode of our Of Interest podcastabout NZ's supply chain issues and the Ministry of Transport's recently released Aotearoa New Zealand Freight and Supply Chain Strategy. Christie was part ofan industry reference group in the development of this strategy.

He says supply chain problems caused by the Covid-19 pandemic brought "an invisible part of business and society" out into the light, and highlighted to the Government how vulnerable NZ is to global disruptions.

"The concern I have is we feel we've come out of Covid and people are kind of going' the supply chain's resolved.' ... What happened with Covid is the tide went out and we saw these rocks, they were exposed and we started to deal with those, but we dealt with them in what I would say were very unsophisticated ways. Now the tide's rising and everyone's forgotten about the rocks below the water," Christie says.

"if I was a doctor who was diagnosing the New Zealand supply chain as my patient I would have to say the diagnosis is that we are in serious, if not critical condition."

"And perhaps staying with that human analogy and referring it to the supply chain, the heart is the beating production sector of New Zealand. And while that's performing well, I think it's actually unproductive and we've seen this multiple times through the Productivity Commission's reports. So our heart isn't beating as efficiently as it can. The arteries and veins are the networks that flow products and goods around, not just [around] New Zealand but the globe, [and] they are constrained, we've got cholesterol in there and high blood pressure," says Christie.

"We've got parts of our network where the blood doesn't flow correctly, so that's not getting to the extremities well, our nervous system, we're actually deaf, dumb and blind, we don't know where the problems are and where they're coming from so we just get smacked in the face and we're probably suffering from early onset dementia. We don't actually have the cognitive ability to learn from our mistakes and improve, so we continually make the same mistakes."

However, he says all is not lost.

"We know lots of patients who are serious and in a critical condition. [But] if they get the right care they can come out the other end better, stronger and more resilient. And I honestly believe that's potentially the future for us in New Zealand and our supply chain."

Given the investment needed, 30-year timeframes, regulatory settings and 360 degree thinking needed, there's a role for government to play, Christie adds.

In the podcast he also talks about the need to change NZ's port structure, why NZ should have reserve stocks of critical imports, whether NZ should have a national shipping line, the role for coastal shipping and rail, why supply chain improvements really matter to small businesses, the push to decarbonise, and more.

"If we want to make a change we're going to have some tough conversations. We're going to have to change some of the settings," Christie says, adding this should always be for the greater good.

Simplify Your Business for Growth with Margo Crawford, Business Sherpa Group

Simplify Your Business for Growth with Margo Crawford, Business Sherpa Group

As businesses grow, they become more complex and overwhelming (especially for you as the owner), so sometimes, you need to simplify your business to achieve long-haul success and sustainable growth. In today’s episode, our guest Margo Crawford shares her entrepreneurship journey to building effective business processes, developing leadership succession, and reconnecting to her company’s purpose - all by keeping things smart and simple.

    About Margo Crawford:

Margo is the Founder & Chair of the Business Sherpa Group, a management consulting firm helping SMEs thrive and succeed. With over 20 years of experience in the field, she is the go-to expert for small and mid-sized businesses looking to build the right foundations and pave their way to the top.

    Episode highlights:

    • Running a business is a team job. Relying on one person for everything creates fragility in the system and leads to stressed-out employees. That’s why it’s so important to put effective systems and processes in place. (05:58)
    • As a business owner, you want to feel confident you’re passing over the business torch to the right person. So, take your time to find a trustworthy leader because leadership succession takes time. (13:24)
    • Sometimes all you need to do to take your business to another level is to work with someone who’s been through the reps. You need to work with people who have the knowledge and experience to help you get to the next step in your entrepreneurship journey. (27:49)
    • Being a business owner is a mug’s game. Over time, you start tying your identity around your business’ financial metrics, successes, and failures. You eventually become your business. (30:05)
    • It’s important to stay connected to your company’s purpose in all stages of growth. Instead of attaching your identity to the numbers, tie it to the core purpose and values. (31:06)

    Margo’s best advice for entrepreneurs:

“It's so important to have that purpose [...] and reconnecting with it and saying, ‘Am I achieving that purpose? Am I doing what I set out to do?’ I wasn't setting out to make a 10 million business. I was setting out to create these outcomes, and if I can reflect on those things, that's where I anchor, and that's where I'm authentic too.” (31:19)

Ep610: Solving the problem of interoperability for Africa’s mobile money crossborder payments

Nika Naghavi, Group Head of Growth, MFS Africa

Mobile money is popular in Africa – the number of mobile money accounts rose to 1.6 billion in 2022. but the missing piece of the puzzle used to be the lack of interoperability – payments could be made within national borders but not on a crossborder basis. MFS Africa is the continent’s largest digital payments network. The firm is working to make payments borderless for individuals, SMEs and larger enterprises. Robin Amlôt of IBS Intelligence spoke to Nika Naghavi, Group Head of Growth, MFS Africa, at Money 20/20.
