    Pearls in Paradise

    Pearls in Paradise
For centuries, the South Pacific has been known as Paradise. The towering volcanic mountains, the crystal clear waters, the radiant birds of splendor … but its greatest treasures are not in its breathtaking scenery. It is in its people. Early Christian missionaries in the South Pacific paid a heavy price, but in the end the message of biblical creation and the risen Christ was received and Paradise knew peace. Now, a new generation is ready for a personal relationship with its Creator and Redeemer. This unique book of science and Scripture offers a devotional of daily reflection for every day of the year. The Fijian government has agreed to allow 200,000 of these books to be distributed in their schools. For a minimum $55 contribution, you will receive a copy of the book and included DVD, and a tax-deductible receipt the for entire contribution. In turn, 10 copies of the book will be distributed free of charge to students and teachers in the South Pacific. 60 Seconds For Motivate Your Monday: How Did I Find My Way Into the USNavy?

60 Seconds For Motivate Your Monday: How Did I Find My Way Into the USNavy?

Hello to you listening in Teaneck, New Jersey!

Coming to you from Whidbey Island Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Motivate Your Monday and your host, Diane Wyzga.

As the younger brother my dad did what all younger brothers do: follow their older brothers. In this case dad enlisted in the US Navy to fight in World War II. He was underage. How did he get in? He lied. He had a piece of paper in his shoe with the number 18 written on it. When dad was asked if he was over 18 he truthfully replied, Yes.

Dad served as a radioman. All 5 brothers saw action, were honorably discharged and came home in good condition. I have an ancient newspaper clipping with a photo of my grandmother receiving a medal from the mayor thanking her for sending her boys to help Uncle Sam.

Having fallen in love with this family story and the movie, South Pacific, there was no other choice for me but to apply to Officer Candidate School after graduating from college. I was commissioned as an Ensign and reported for duty to Portsmouth Naval Hospital, Surgical Pediatric ward. I number these years as a USNavy nurse among the finest of my life. Today I say “Thank you with gratitude!” to my dad, my uncles, and all servicemen and women for the privilege of military service.

    The Auckland Island Shipwrecks

    The Auckland Island Shipwrecks

Join Kelli as she tells the story of two shipwrecks that took place on Auckland Island in 1864, at the same time, though neither knew the other was there. One wreck tells the tale of a group that banded together in the face of adversity and used their creativity and strength to survive. The other wreck is more like an adult version of Lord of the Flies; the situation quickly devolved into chaos, with most survivors dying of starvation. Let's find out how and why two shipwrecks, on opposite sides of the same island, had such vastly different outcomes.

Since he made his debut as Marius in Les Miserables, Rob has established an enviable career as one of the West End's finest leading men taking on roles like Fabrizio in The Light in the Piazza and Joe Cable in South Pacific. As well as being highly sought after actor though, Rob Houchen is also one of the most exciting young producers after establishing West End Does / Chorus Presents, staging sell-out concerts at venues like Cadogan Hall featuring some of the West End's most popular stars. One highlight was producing a 30th anniversary concert of personal favourite: Children of Eden with the blessing of composer Stephen Schwartz and also brought together original cast members: Ruthie Henshall and Ray Shell. Here, Rob also made his directing debut and audiences got an insight into another talent of the multi-talented actor. In this special interview, Rob Houchen opened about the last decade in his career on the West End, both as an actor and as a producer. We get to see a personal side to Rob as well, as he opened up about his relationship with fellow actor Jack Butterworth as well as his past struggles with body image and a difficult relationship with food. Rob also shared his thoughts on audience behaviour and his experiences with fans in the past. Still, he shares his gratitude for all of his experiences during his career and remains ambitious for the future. After turning 30 during the pandemic, he seems to have found a new sense of security within himself and looks forward to new challenges ahead as well as setting new goals for his career.

The Art of Singing and Living Full-Tilt with Opera Baritone Gabriel Manro

The Art of Singing and Living Full-Tilt with Opera Baritone Gabriel Manro

Barton and Gabriel sit down to discuss the world of Opera, performance and Gabe's mindset of performing Internationally at the highest level.  Highlights from this podcast include:
    - Life lessons from his Voice Teacher Elizabeth Parham stating "that little voice in your head telling us we're not enough... that is the devil"
    - How Gabe thinks about performing for thousands of people
    - what type of things Gabe does to prepare himself for a big performance.
    - how the voice works and how he's able to create such powerful sound and sing professionally.

    Gabriel's Bio:
Multiple Grammy Award winning baritone Gabriel Manro has been called “a new kind of baritone: not lyric, not helden, not Kavalier, not Bariton-Martin — none of those. Rather, he’s a knock-down baritone.” --San Francisco Classical Voice. Indeed, Manro regularly sings dramatic baritone roles such as Don Carlo di Vargas (La forza del destino), Andrei Shchelkalov (Boris Godunov), and Tonio (I Pagliacci)

Opera News describes Manro as “Gifted with a striking, sinister baritone that remains strong, even and sonorous throughout the range, he tears into Verdi's music with a vengeance.” -- Opera News.
Mr. Manro made his professional operatic debut as Third Inmate in Jake Heggie's ground-breaking opera Dead Man Walking for Opera Pacific with Frederica von Stade. He went on to perform the role of Inquisitor in Opera Pacific's Candide. Mr. Manro has appeared in numerous contemporary and world-premiere operas and musicals:
As Muscovite Trader in John Corigliano’s The Ghosts of Versailles (Pentatone Music: Grammy--Best Opera Recording), as the Mousling in the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s Alice in Wonderland by Unsuk Chin, the Computer in Los Angeles Opera’s The Fly by film composer Howard Shore (Lord of the Rings Trilogy); as The Chauffeur in Opera Santa Barbara’s Séance on a Wet Afternoon by Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Godspell); and as Angry Voter in Los Angeles Opera’s Il Postino (Sony Classical DVD). Manro created the role of President Lincoln in Golden Gate Opera's world-premiere Civil War Epic: Lincoln and Booth. Off-Broadway, Mr. Manro led the original cast of Center for Contemporary Opera’s production of Oration by Line Tjørnhøj. On television, Manro appeared as Joel Lynch and Father Jackson in the European premiere live telecast of William Mayer’s: A Death in the Family at the Hungarian National Theater and Opéra Grand D’Avignon which was voted “audience favorite” opera.  Gabriel also played Jafar in Walt Disney Company’s original stage production of Aladdin.

Gabe's European operatic debut was as Doctor Bartolo (Il barbiere di Siviglia) with Corfu Opera in Greece. His extensive repertoire and engagements have also included the roles of Bluebeard (Bluebeard’s Castle), Count Almaviva, Bartolo, Antonio (Le nozze di Figaro), Guglielmo, Don Alfonso (Cosí fan tutte), Don Giovanni (Don Giovanni).
See Mr. Manro next as Osmund in the world-premiere stage production of Siegfried Wagner’s Rainulf and Adelasia  during this summer’s Bayreuth Festival in Germany.

    Downunder Travel

    Downunder Travel

    Downunder Travel

This week Al goes downunder in downtown Toronto when he visits with Jason Webb from Downunder Travel. Jason and his team have been helping travelers get from Canada to Australia and the South Pacific and back since 2004.

Business got off to a strong start for Jason and his team, but the travel industry can be quite a turbulent one…so to speak. Pilot strikes, airline closures, terrorist attacks, can all threaten to put you out of business.

Downunder Travel managed to survive all challenges thrown at them, but none of these would come close to preparing them for what was about to happen to the world in 2020.

How did they survive? Listen to find out.

Joanna Ampil: Returning to South Pacific

Joanna Ampil: Returning to South Pacific

For the best part of three decades, Joanna Ampil has been recognised as one of the most prolific musical theatre acts to arrive onto the scene, taking on roles like Mary Magdalene in Jesus Christ Superstar, Grizabella in Cats and Kim in Miss Saigon. After receiving a huge reception as Bloody Mary in South Pacific last year at Chichester Festival Theatre, she is reprising the role in the classic Rodgers & Hammerstein musical at Sadlers Wells Theatre, before heading on tour with the show. Although traditionally seen as a caricature, in Daniel Evans' new production, Joanna is given the opportunity to humanise this character and make her someone audiences are able to empathise with. It's an opportunity that she's fully taken advantage of as we are invited to see Bloody Mary through a new lens. Of course, Joanna's portrayal has also meant we are treated to a terrific performance as well as luscious vocals.

In this new interview, Joanna Ampil sat down to talk about how she felt it was really important to return to the show to tell Bloody Mary's story. After performing in a concert production of South Pacific in Manilla a few years prior to the Chichester run, she tells us about how surprised she was by how richly deep and antiracist the show really is. We also hear Joanna share her hopes for the musical theatre industry as in many ways, the industry is still continuing to recover from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. She hopes audiences will return on larger scales to support the industry and that shows like South Pacific will continue that drive. As she prepares to go on tour, we hear her also talk about her experience working on productions all around the world from her home in the Philippines to the rest of Asia and of course here in the UK. It's a fascinating listen and we look forward seeing Joanna continue her role on tour in the coming weeks.

South Pacific plays at Sadler's Wells Theatre until 28 August and a list of tour dates can be found on southpacificshow.com

    #107: Betel Nut

    #107: Betel Nut

Caffeine (via coffee), alcohol and nicotine (via tobacco) are the top three human-used drugs on Earth. And you are probably familiar with all three. But the fourth most common drug isn't cocaine, heroin or marijuana. Betel Nut is a drug you might not know much about if you don't live in a tropical region. It is the fruit from the Areca catechu, a palm tree that grows wild in humid regions of the globe. The pit of the fruit can be crushed and chewed to instigate a euphoric high.

In this episode I explain what Betel Nut is, why its use is so common, why (and how) it can be dangerous, and why we don't use it (or know about it) very often in the United States.
