Mark and Dave Shultz were viewed by many as the greatest wrestlers in the world, but their lives and careers would be uprooted less than a decade after they meet an eccentric multi-millionaire, John du Pont. Their story is portrayed in Bennett Miller’s Foxcatcher (2014), featuring an all-star cast including Steve Carell, Channing Tatum, and Mark Ruffalo.

    Alec Sokolow: the hero's journey

    Alec Sokolow: the hero's journey

Hey, this is Valerie. I recently had the good fortune to study with Academy Award-nominated screenwriter, Alec Sokolow. (Super cool, right!?) Somehow or other, I got up enough nerve to ask him for an interview and he graciously took 30 minutes out of his day to share with us his pro tips, tricks and advice. Oh, and he lets us in on his secret for writing a dual-protagonist story. Check it out!

    Last Flag Flying & Bullseye

    Last Flag Flying & Bullseye

Vexillologists should be delighted this week as we attempt to raise the cinematic banner as high as we can when we discuss the top 5 Flags. From fictional countries to cartoon weaponry, it's actually churches that prove to be a surprisingly good place to go to collect them, after all it's a great place to seek pennants.

LAST FLAG FLYING is Richard Linklater's frequently moving but not entirely successful  exploration of patriotism, friendship and loss which sees former Marine Larry "Doc" Shepherd (Steve Carell) reunite with Vietnam veterans Sal (Bryan Cranston) and the Reverend Richard Mueller (Laurence Fishburne) in order to bury his son, killed in action in Iraq.  When a dark truth emerges about Larry Jr.'s death, Doc resolves to bring his son home to bury him in his civilian clothing alongside his recently deceased wife. Along the way, the three men find themselves coming to terms with the shared experiences of a war that continues to shape their lives through painful physical and mental trauma. The meaning of heroism is a complex issue which the movie handles sensitively and the movie is at its best when the leads are allowed to breathe life into thin characters. Sitcom style asides like Sal and Mueller being arrested as terrorists or a trip to buy a newfangled thing called a mobile phone are a distraction from the more interesting thematic content of the movie.

Staple of 80's Sunday night television, BULLSEYE is our kids tv selection this week as we take a look back at a time when moustaches were thick, mullets were magnificent, and working class northerners were paraded on British tv for the very first time vying for the chance to win a washing machine, toaster or of course a speedboat. Jim Bowen doesn't look a day over sixty-five which is a shame because he was 44 when he hosted episode four of the first season, the instalment we watched for this review. Find out just why there were so many speedboats, reminisce about the casual sexism and homophobia and find out which serial killer was convicted using evidence from the show.

    Asteroid City | Episode 57 | WTFAWW

Folge 1227: ASTEROID CITY - Puppenspiel in Pastell

    Asteroid City

    Asteroid City

On this special bonus episode of Cinemaholics, we discuss Asteroid City, the latest movie from writer/director Wes Anderson. His new feature has a few things in common with his previous one, The French Dispatch, particularly when it comes to his ability to convince almost every recognizable actor in Hollywood to show up. And show up they did for this quirky sci-fi romantic comedy drama about a Junior Stargazer convention in a 50s desert town where events take an alienating turn, so to speak.

Asteroid City was directed and written by Wes Anderson and is based on a story by Anderson and Roman Coppola. The ensemble cast includes Jason Schwartzman, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hanks, Jeffrey Wright, Tilda Swinton, Bryan Cranston, Edward Norton, Adrien Brody, Liev Schreiber, Hope Davis, Steve Park, Rupert Friend, Maya Hawke, Steve Carell, Matt Dillon, Hong Chau, Willem Dafoe, Margot Robbie, Tony Revolori, Jake Ryan, and Jeff Goldblum. The film premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival and opens in limited release on June 16 through Focus Features. It will later go wide on June 23.

    Who Would Watch 'Evan Almighty'?

    Who Would Watch 'Evan Almighty'?

Another mini episode, but this is a mini on one of the largest movies evermade (if you count the value/mass of a movie based on how large the boats are in the film).  Evan almighty is the sequel to Bruce Almighty, and doesn't include Jim Carrey, cost 175 million dollars, was aimed at children,  and is VERY religious...Who would watch that? Oscar and Carl try to figure that out.
