Ep. 186: Under The Grunge Part 5

Ep. 186: Under The Grunge Part 5

It’s that time of year again, where we lace up our Doc Martins and hike over to the Pacific Northwest to the land of everything GRUNGE! Is it possible that we are on our 5th ep in this series and we still haven’t played Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, and Pearl Jam??? Oh yeah… Your hosts remember this time fondly, as we were young adults when the Seattle scene invaded all rock n’ roll avenues in the US.

This episode features songs from bands outside the big 4 of grunge, or the Seattle sound, or whatever you want to call that stuff that happened in the early 90s. A perfect amalgam of punk, classic rock, and metal is right in our wheelhouse. We have a lot of fun reminiscing about this unique time in rock history. Grab a Starbucks, put your flannel on, and join us on the trek!

    Songs this week include:

    1. Mind Funk – “Goddess” or “Mama, Moses and Me” from Dropped (1993)
    2. Satchel – “Taste It” from EDC (1994)
    3. PJ Harvey – “Victory” from Dry (1992)
    4. Billionaire – “The Jimmie Hale Mission” from Ascension (2000)
    5. Malfunkshun – “My Liberty (With Morals)” from Return To Olympus (1987)
    6. For Love Not Lisa – “Nothing But The Heavy” from The Lost Elephant (1999)
    7. Icky Joey – “Bone Of Contention” from Pooh (1993)

Pearl Jam's Stone Gossard and Dorothy

Pearl Jam's Stone Gossard and Dorothy

Grunge legend Stone Gossard joins me on Talkin' Rock. We discuss his record label, Loosegroove Records and the band Tigercub, which he's pushing. He tells me about starting the label and some of the many bands that he's signed over the years. Of course we talk about Pearl Jam. He tells me where they are as far as new music is concerned, and a loose timetable of when to expect it. We talk some Rock Hall, Chris Cornell, Duff McKagen and more.

Dorothy checked in for her 2022 exit interview. Ha! She looks back on Gifts From The Holy Ghost, the TV show Top Ten Revealed, Plans for 2023 including some collaborations, and that's just for starters.

Ep. 124: Under The Grunge Part 3

Ep. 124: Under The Grunge Part 3

This week we strap on our old Doc Martins trudge through the muck and grime of the springtime in the US Pacific Northwest. Yep, time for our annual spring GRUNGE episode! We discuss the bands just outside the usual suspects of Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, and Pearl Jam. Your hosts remember this time fondly, as we were young adults when the Seattle scene invaded all rock n’ roll avenues in the US. In retrospect, this sounds like less of a movement and more of a melting pot of many of the genres that had been established in silos during the 70s and 80s. What do you think?

This episode features songs from bands outside the big 4 of grunge, but we don’t think you’ll be totally surprised. A perfect amalgam of punk, classic rock, and metal is right in Kevin’s wheelhouse, and we find out the impact this had on Robert’s musical path. We discuss the origins of the movement and have a lot of fun reminiscing about this unique time in rock history. Come jump on the hike with us to grab a Starbucks and some flannel.

    Songs this week include:

    1. Kerbdog – “Cleaver” from Kerbdog (1994)
    2. Hammerbox – “Hole” from Numb (1993)
    3. Pond – “Tree” from Pond (1993)
    4. Brad – “Raise Love” from Shame (1993)
    5. The Gits – “Another Shot Of Whiskey” from Frenching The Bully (1992)
    6. Mudhoney – “Living Wreck” from Piece Of Cake (1992)
    7. 7 Year Bitch – “M.I.A.” from Viva Zapata! (1994)

Episode 24 - GRUNGE MONTH 2 | Mother Love Bone vs Temple Of The Dog

Episode 24 - GRUNGE MONTH 2 | Mother Love Bone vs Temple Of The Dog

Jason and Imran conclude their second grunge exploration and their trilogy of battles with Hannah with Mother Love Bone - Apple vs Temple Of The Dog - Temple Of The Dog, where it all began.
Apple is the only full length studio album Mother Love Bone ever released as days before dropping, frontman, Andrew Wood died from an overdose. In tribute, Soundgarden singer, Chris Cornell (also a roommate of Wood's) got together with surviving members of the band, plus recruiting Mick McCready and Eddie Vedder, the future Pearl Jam, to comprise the seminal Temple Of The Dog album.

    Who wins this one?

The Story of Rock and Roll: S4E39

The Story of Rock and Roll: S4E39

Episode 39 of Season 4 aired at 19h00 on Rebel Rock Radio, incredible how the year is flying past!  We kicked off with 'The Mob Rules' brilliantly covered by Adrenaline Mob.  The track came off a tribute to Ronnie James Dio album called This is Your Life.  It set the show off to a blistering start.  It fell to Alice Cooper and Slash's Snakepit to pick up the pieces.  Slash features on both tracks.  From there we were into some Gospel music from Stryper and some not gospel music from Mötley Crüe.  There was a bit of early '80s stuff then we went to Seattle to check out solo work from Stone Gossard and Jerry Cantrell of Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains respectively.

One of the show highlights for me was a 3 song bit featuring SA bands spanning nearly 40 years.  We went from a new band in Cape Town called Image&Nation with a track called 'Rivers and Dreams' back to the mid-'80s and a recording I have of The Diamond Dogs, to AKing out of Bellville featuring half of Fokofpolisiekar.  We also checked out the power of Dean Smith, an ex-South African responsible for pioneering some serious SA Metal, and his new album released as Deangersmith.  The album is called Lead Us to Your Taker (Disarm the Corrupt) and the track was called 'Buckle My Shoe'.

In the last hour we got heavy with Hatebreed and Testament then commercial with Nickelback and Bon Jovi ( yes I said the N-word), and played out with some classic ACDC, Judas Priest, and show closer 'Gypsy Lee Rose' from Brody Dalle's outfit The Distillers.  I Ran out of time as usual.  I was so busy I totally forgot to play the new Guns 'n' Roses track, which tells you something about a few things.

Artists featured: Adrenaline Mob, Alice Cooper, Slash's Snakepit, Stryper, Triumph, Texas Hippie Coalition, Black Star Riders, Sebastian Bach, Mötley Crüe, Stone Gossard, Jerry Cantrell, Biters, Kid Rock, Frank Marino, Rory Gallagher, Rival Sons, Black Stone Cherry, Dangerous Toys, My Chemical Romance, Seether, Image&Nation, The Diamond Dogs, AKing, Deangersmith, Testament, Hatebreed, Serj Tankian, The Stranglers, Queensrÿche, ACDC, The LA Maybe, Nickelback, Bon Jovi, Judas Priest, The Distillers.

    Atlanta '94

    Atlanta '94
On this episode, we look at back at the historic show from The Fox Theater in Atlanta from April 3rd, 1994. Old school fans probably listened to this one a million times after recording it from the live radio broadcast (I know we have!). New school fans need to seek it out! Apologies for being a week late, as always, we thank you for your patience!

Ty Willman (Green Apple Quick Step singer)

Episode 149- Ty Willman of Green Apple Quick Step! This was a really fun interview! For those unfamiliar with Green Apple Quick Step, they were a really great Seattle 90s band. There were videos on MTV as well as songs on the soundtracks of The Basketball Diaries, I Know What You Did Last Summer and Homegrown. The band also did a lot of big shows including a European tour with Tool & Rage Against the Machine. Ty also worked on several side projects with members of Pearl Jam. He has some current musical projects coming out soon, and he also does some really cool art work that is available for sale.
