Australia Misses Out On Judas Priest Album Listening Parties, Sepulture Drummer Quits + MORE

Here’s the latest in Hard N Heavy Headlines with Emmy Mack of RedHook!

This episode brings you the electrifying news of Judas Priest's unique invitation to fans for a global listening event celebrating their new album, 'Invincible Shield.' Despite the buzz, Australian fans face disappointment with no local events announced, leaving many eagerly awaiting updates.

In a dramatic turn of events, the Sepultura camp is abuzz with the departure of drummer Eloy Casagrande in a move that hints at anything but an amicable split. The band's statement reveals Casagrande's sudden exit to pursue a mysterious new project, sparking rumors of his potential collaboration with Slipknot. Meanwhile, Sepultura marches on, with Greyson Nekrutman of Suicidal Tendencies stepping in to fill the void as the band embarks on their final world tour.

Adding a touch of nostalgia and emotion, Alex Van Halen opens up about his forthcoming memoir, 'Brothers,' a heartfelt tribute to his late brother, Eddie. Scheduled for release on October 22nd, the book promises to delve deep into the bond between the siblings and their journey through music history.

Ep. 213: Sumthin' Smells Funky Vol. 8! - White Pepper

Welcome back my friends to Ep. 213 of the InObscuria Podcast! Last week one of your esteemed co-hosts mentioned that he was going to start a new funk rock band called White Pepper… We thought this week would pontificate about what that group will sound like! We will once again explore all things FUNKY! Let your body move and your asses groove as we get down with some badass funk rock!

What is it that we do here at InObscuria? This genre has a special meaning to the hosts, as they have dabbled in this funkdafied landscape throughout their musical journeys.

Ep. 212: Shredding The Tomb - Guitars That Rocked Our World

Ep. 212: Shredding The Tomb - Guitars That Rocked Our World

This week we continue the discussion that we started at the end of our last show; with our admiration of the almighty power of the guitar and the guitar hero! This time around we are going to play guitarists, or guitar passages or leads in songs that caught our ears at some point in our lives that made us truly stop and listen. It’s not always about the training, finesse, dexterity, or speed a player has or even the style of music or song that is being played. If you are into guitar and the sound of strings being plucked and bent then you know… It’s just something you feel deep down that gets to your heart and soul!

What’s this InObscuria thing? We’re a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This week we discuss all three. Get out your old Guitar World and Guitar Player mags and flip the pages as we discuss some of the most amazing fingers to ever touch a fretboard! Be sure to also check out the Jason Becker documentary “Jason Becker: Not Dead Yet” that we mention.

    Songs this week include:

    1. Anvil Chorus – “Blue Flames” from The Killing Sun (2009)
    2. Kirk Hammett – “The Jinn” from Portals - EP (2022)
    3. Bruce Kulick – “Ain’t Gonna Die” from BK3 (2010)
    4. Buckethead – “Welcome To Bucketheadland” from Giant Robot (1994)
    5. Tears For Fears – “Broken” from Songs From The Big Chair (1985)
    6. Psycho Motel – “Welcome To The World” from Welcome To The World (1997)
    7. Cacophony – “Go Off!” from Go Off! (1988)

    The Mythology of You

    The Mythology of You

Whether you know it or not, you already have a personal mythology. It is made up of stories - stories of your place of birth, your family, your religion or spirituality (or lack thereof), your own lived experiences. Examining these tales can teach you a lot about yourself - and give you the agency to realign your stories to more fully reflect the you that you want to be.

Now here’s something you may not know. A lot of us think about suicide. The problem is we’re afraid to speak to each other about it. The lack of knowledge about the prevalence of ‘suicidal ideation’ has hampered suicide prevention.

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E5

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E5

S6E5 aired at 19h00 on 2 Feb 2023 live on Rebel Rock Radio.  The opening track was by Warrior Soul, I have some good memories of this band.  Marq Vas and I discovered them in the early ‘90s and their Last Decade, Dead Century album, where this track came from was always in heavy rotation.  Next up, Thunder Mother with ‘Borrowed Time’ conjured up the image of thousands of lighters held aloft, and ‘Turn of the Screw' from Heaven & Hell again reminded us of the magnificence of Ronnie James Dio’s Voice.

During the show, Tim sent me the list of 2023 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominations and coincidently four of them were in the 'possible track' playlist.  So with that, I had to play Iron Maiden, Sound Garden, Sheryl Crow, and Warren Zevon.  Good luck to all of them.   Billy Idol has a very cool thing going, he has released an EP every year since 2021, I assume it is on purpose, and we will get another one in 2023.  It keeps things fresh and as long as Steve Stevens is with him I will buy every single one.  Suicidal Tendencies raised the tempo by a factor of about ten with a delightful track called ‘Disco’s Out, Murders In'.  We had a bit of fun trying to figure out which of these four albums released in 1984 you would choose if you could only choose two.  We had Van Halen, - 1984, Iron Maiden - Powerslave, Metallica - Ride The Lightening and, Judas Priest - Defenders of the Faith.  There was no clear favorite which was to be expected given the quality of those albums, and that was the point. For my money, it was Metallica and the mighty Judas Priest, but tomorrow it might be different.  Next week we will look at 1980. We took a listen to 'The Sentinel' and 'Creeping Death'.

South African music was well represented by Future Radio, comprising Johnny Future and Drikus Roets, two very talented artist/musicians.  We heard a track called 'DOI' off their Freedom album, then we had Johnathan Martin with 'Don't Want To Know' and finally SA Rock and Bluesman Kenny Hughes who spoke to me this week and told me a bit about the new track 'Midnight Man'.  We listened to what he said about it and then took a listen to it.  It is a great track and people liked it a lot.  The plan is to do more of these short 5 min interviews and to give the artist a chance to tell you about their music.

The UK Punk slot was ably filled by The Stranglers, UK Subs, and Sham 69 and then it was time for our weekly Immortals, i.e. tracks over 7 min long that will live forever.  This week it was The Fall of the Peacemakers by Molly Hatchet.  For my money the highlights of this show were Indian rockers Girish & the Chronicles, their new album Back on Earth is simply stunning, its got everything you would expect from a top-flight '80s style metal band.  The brand new Iggy Pop is out and we played ‘Morning Show’ which is wonderful.  I advised you to listen to it a couple of times.  It is a serious grower.   There is plenty more to get into, this episode was a cracker.  Cheers and thanks for listening.

Artists featured:  Warrior Soul, Thunder Mother, Heaven & Hell, Black Stone Cherry, Soundgarden, L.A. Rats, Slash, Suicidal Tendencies, Black Label Society, Billy Idol, Skid Row, Sheryl Crow, Iron Maiden, Moon Tooth, Pearl Jam, Future Radio, Johnathan Martin, Kenny Hughes, Girish & the Chronicles, ACDC, Judas Priest, Metallica, The Stranglers, UK Subs, Sham 69, Molly Hatchet, Santana, Uriah Heep, Iggy Pop, Bush, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, U2, Tim Minchin, Robbie Robertson, Warren Zevon, Slayer

    Ep. 155: Metal Thrashing Mad

    Ep. 155: Metal Thrashing Mad

Meet us in the pit this week for a hella good time! We’re getting our aggression by revisiting the starting point of Kevin’s music fandom. The thrash, crossover, and speed metal movement of the 80s spawned his love of all things rock n’ punk n’ metal. We will not be covering the Big 4 of Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax; but if you love them, then you will love this bunch. How will Robert react to one of our heaviest episodes of all time??? Will he be metal thrashing mad or just plain mad?!?!

What is it that we do here at InObscuria? We exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. In this episode, we explore all things mosh-worthy! This is real metal people. All hail the speed and ferocity of Thrash! Our hope is that we turn you on to something new and heavy.

    Songs this week include:

    1. Nuclear Assault – “Rise From The Ashes”from Survive(1988)
    2. D.R.I. – “5 Year Plan” from Crossover (1987)
    3. Stone – “Get Stoned” from Stone (1988)
    4. Evile – “Underworld” from Skull (2013)
    5. Voivod – “Technocratic Manipulators” from Dimension Hatross (1987)
    6. Sacred Reich – “The American Way” from The American Way (1990)

Ep. 117: Pulling The Plug... Acoustic Rock n' Punk n' Metal

Ep. 117: Pulling The Plug... Acoustic Rock n' Punk n' Metal

Electric artists have been playing acoustically since the beginning of recorded music. Usually, the slower ballads and the prettier mellow songs by rock artists were accompanied by acoustic guitars. This week we are celebrating bands that can re-imagine an up-tempo song with acoustic instruments and still rock! We are pulling the plug… and gasping for air guitars!

What’s this InObscuria thing? We’re a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This week we discuss the FORGOTTEN. Mtv started a series in 1989 called “unplugged”, and almost every mainstream relevant act started producing acoustic albums or versions of their songs. This week we listen to some artists that you may have never considered as having acoustic interpretations of their songs.

    Songs this week include:

    1. Sevendust – “Seasons” from Southside Double-Wide Acoustic Live (2004)
    2. Thundermother – “Dogs From Hell (acoustic)” from Heat Wave Deluxe Addition (2021)
    3. Diamond Head – “Lightning To The Nations” from Acoustic First Cuts EP (2002)
    4. Los Kung-Fu Monkeys – “Common Chord (acoustic)” from Common Chord (2020)
    5. Clutch – “Basket Of Eggs (acoustic)” from Blast Tyrant Deluxe Addition (2011)
    6. Haunt – “On The Stage” from Unplugged Vol. 1 (2021)
    7. Suicidal Tendencies – “Get Your Right On! (acoustic)” from Get Your Fight On! (2018)
    8. Mercy Beat – “Pissed-Off Song” from Walk With Me (1999)

Ep. 94: Shredding The Tomb - How Low Can You Go?

In this week’s episode, we bow down as low as we can get to the almighty bass guitar heroes! The heart of rock n’ roll is the rhythm and this week we explore some of the most amazing low-frequency providers. How do they make such wonderful noise with metal wires on a piece of wood? This subject holds a very special place in Kevin’s heart, as he tries very hard to play the same instrument that we are praising this week.
